My Ring

December 1st, 2009 @ 1:49 pm by Mrs. Nachos

We had taken a few trips in the beginning of the year to Robbins Brothers and Zales to get an idea of price and design. I loved trying on all the different kinds of rings they had to offer, but I didn’t have a specific design in mind. All I knew is that I wanted something simple but sparkly. I also knew I was going to be getting married with my late grandmother’s ring and I wanted something to complement it, and it had to lay flat against the band.

I looked everywhere online for ideas—celebrity rings, Google images, eBay, and my favorite that I came across was the Tiffany Novo. But, I wanted a princess cut.

We decided to have my ring custom made, and we found a jeweler that came highly recommended by a friend. We gave them pictures of my grandma’s band…

… and we showed them the design I wanted. The whole process was really cool because they sent us a CAD of almost exactly what I had in mind. We had to have them change the prong setting to a peg-head which made the diamond sit on top of the band instead of around it so it would sit flush with the wedding band. They also suggested instead of doing an eternity band, (where the diamonds go all the way around the band) we take a few diamonds out at the bottom so if I ever needed it resized, it could be done. This is the final CAD…

… and it looks EXACTLY like my ring. Pretty amazing, huh?

After I saw the rendering, I was banned from asking any questions about it. Let me tell you, until the day that he actually proposed, I had so many nightmares about that ring. In my dreams, the stone fell out, there were pearls wrapped around the band with fishing wire, it crumbled in my hands. You name it, I dreamt it. It was very strange. I was relieved when I finally saw the finished product in living color because it turned out perfect.

Did you choose a custom e-ring? How involved were you in the design process? Were you able to see it in person before your official engagement?

Stunning ring! I’m likely designing mine because I know exactly what I want and can’t find it anywhere. I’m just hoping we’ll find a good jeweler to work with.

Oh man! I had the worst ring nightmares before he proposed! (Mine included fishing wire too. Weird.) Where the diamond was supposed to be there was a finger-long wooden bead. The worst part of my dream was trying to fake loving it while he looked all cute and proud. I shouldn’t have worried though. He done good. :)

My ring is currently being made. It had to be custom because I chose a very unusual cut (trillion) so we had to build it from the ground up. We’re actually going in to see the wax version tomorrow morning!

That’s really pretty! I have a custom ring and I LOVE it. I am really picky, so I had a lot of input into it- my sister’s bf’s dad is a jeweler so I worked with him to design my ring. I wanted the antique look of a Tacori but I didn’t like how high the diamond was set. I gave him a bunch of pictures, so I had a general idea of what it would look like, but I wasn’t allowed so see anything past the rubber cast (and you can’t really tell much from that). I was a bit worried like you said because I thought maybe I hadn’t been really clear about what I had wanted, but it turned out even better than I imagined. Everyone comments on how unique it is, so I’m glad I went the custom route.

I think for the guys, it does take some of the spontinaity out of proposing since you will have a general idea of when the ring is done if you were involved in the process. But, fortunately my FI realized that getting exactly what I wanted was more important than the element of surprise (and we had been together for over 3 years when he proposed so it wasn’t really going to be that much of a surprise anyway!)

I agree with everyone about the ring CAD. It’s so lifelike.

Your ring is very beautiful indeed. It looks really majestic!

The NOVO has been my dream ring for the longest time. I’m thinking of purchasing it myself because I want it so badly.

That’s really neat! I picked out my stone separately from my setting, and the only way we could see them “together” was for them to set the stone in the setting loose. It fell way down into the setting and looked kind of wonky, so when I saw my ring together for the first time when Mr. FF proposed, I was amazed!

Can I ask if it was Windy City Diamonds? That’s why my man got my ring. Are there other jewelers in Chicago that do CAD?

Your ring is absolutely gorgeous. I have my fiance’s great-grandmother’s ring, and I’ll wear it for a number of years. But when it does come time in the future to get a new ring, I really want to design my own.
