About Mrs. Trail Mix

One Step at a Time

December 1st, 2009 @ 11:20 am by Mrs. Trail Mix

The time has come for me to officially start training for the Boston Marathon. It’s not until the middle of April but I’ve been pretty lax on my running for the last month or so, therefore necessitating a longer training period than I normally do since I have a lot of miles to log.

People generally tend to be impressed when I tell them I’m running a marathon and I often get comments like, “I could never do that,” or “Good for you! I can’t imagine running for that long.” I’m here to tell you that anyone can run a marathon. ANY. ONE. My philosophy on marathons is this: If you can run a mile, you can run a marathon. Seriously. All it takes is one foot in front of the other, step by step, as you cover those miles. It may seem intimidating but it’s a slow and gradual build-up of mileage that if done properly, can get anybody over the finish line after 26.2 miles.

When I’m marathon training, I start pretty small and every week add one or two miles to my long run. So if you can run 3 miles comfortably, the next week you would push yourself to run 4, then the next week 5 and so on.

For example, on Thanksgiving Day I ran 6 miles at a comfortable pace. It’s probably the longest run I’ve done since September. Now, I’m a slight mis-example because I work out enough that I can almost always run 5 miles easily, so for this recent run I pushed it to 6 miles. I’ll do a few 30 minute runs this coming week and probably at least one 45 or 60 minute sesh on the ol’ elliptical before trying for 7 miles next weekend. And so on and so forth, until April!

Completing a marathon is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences I’ve ever had in my life. If you’ve ever thought about trying to run one, DO IT. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it. I really believe in the powerful and positive benefits of running, and personally, I think running a marathon should be on everyone’s “Bucket List”. The rewards, both mental and physical (hello, fitting into your wedding dress!) are beyond limitless.

If you would like more advice how to train for a marathon or how to get started, feel free to PM me and I’ll happily answer any questions you might have…

Now go get running!

I’m training for a half marathon in 6 weeks (eek!) and just ran a 10K over Thanksgiving weekend. I’m adding a mile every week and should be all set (hopefully) I’m planning on doing the NYC Half in March, and then maybe maybe maybe thinking about the marathon in 2011 ;o)

Really, really, really, don’t increase your mileage too quickly. Really. I’m sure you know that, but I would feel bad if I didn’t say it again.

I made list of goals I’d like to meet before motherhood (funny point but I figured lugging a baby in my tummy might hinder my chances of skydiving) and a half-marathon is top on the list!! Maybe I should just take your advice and change it to a real marathon ;)

Good luck! Boston is a fun marathon

I trained in 2007…sadly I was up to 20 miles (and three weeks out from the marathon) when I was diagnosed with IT band syndrome and could barely walk let alone run when marathon time came.

it’s true! ANY ONE can run a marathon! Even bearcub-the-tortoise! ;)
one foot in front of the other! (plus energy gels, plenty of water, and some tylenol along the way! ;) )

That is awesome! I was always a horrrrrible runner. As in, could not do it at all. I started c25k last April and the first workout I thought I was going to die after running ONE MINUTE intervals, how pathetic is that? But, I stuck with it and ran a 5K in August!! I was so proud of myself. Unfortunately I’ve really fallen off the running wagon since then but the most important thing is that I learned what is possible when I stick with it. I’m not sure a marathon is on my bucket-list, but I think maybe some day a half marathon might be :)

Thanks for this!! I have recently set a goal into action and decided I want to train for a 5K, then a 10K, then a half marathon with the ultimate goal being to do a full marathon. I have never been a runner, but decided to start hopping on the treadmill more and more each week. I have noticed a big difference since my first bout and I want to keep pushing myself to build my endurance and stamina.

I couldn’t agree more - it has to be one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. :)

It is true that anyone can do this. I just completed my first marathon with my mom. I trained for 1 year. I started off not being able to run 1 mile and somehow I finished the marathon. I did 3 minutes running and 2 minutes walking for the first half and then walked the entire second half. It def can be done if I did it.

Running is awesome and it’s true anyone can do it. But, though I certainly toned up while training for mine, I didn’t lose one pound. All those training runs make you huuuuungry!

I really want to do a marathon, but the thing that most marathon runners do not acknowledge is the time it takes to train. I currently spend about 2hrs a weekend of a 6-7 mile run (getting ready, getting to my closest safe path to run, running, then getting home and showering.) When I was half marathon training, that increased to 3 hours, and I know a marathon will take at least 4 hours on the weekend (or we need to move.)
I do agree that if you can do a mile, you can do a marathon - but training is important, and a lot of people don’t have or can’t make the time.
I plan to do a marathon in 2011, and next spring I’m doing my second half, a 10-miler, and my first tri, so I’m not without goals for the next 12 months - which will hopefully help keep me in shape while I study for the bar!

I like your words of encouragement, I really do, but I really don’t think I could run a marathon. The most I’ve ever run is 3 miles at one time. That’s it, and I thought I was going to die. Maybe I could try for a half??

Ahh. With time, any one can accomplish a half-marathon. Keep in mind, however, that you are unlikely to improve your speed significantly once you start training for a marathon. Get a good base going first . . . I’m sure Ms. TM has a great base since she qualified for Boston.

@FrozenYogurt: That’s what I used to think too. I also figured I couldn’t run, I’m knock-kneed, I look like a dork, etc. But you just keep going a little longer every day and it gets easier and easier.
