About Mrs. Nachos

We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ China

December 1st, 2009 @ 10:03 am by Mrs. Nachos

For the last 4 months, we have been trying to figure out the whole registry situation. When Mr. N and I moved in together this time last year, we used every possible nook and cranny in our 1300 square foot apartment to put stuff. We literally had 2 of everything - 2 irons, 2 vacuums, 2 sets of kitchen everything. Now tell me, who in the world needs 2 George Foreman grills when neither person cooks?

I’ve talked to a bunch of people about what we could possibly register for, and the answer is usually the same – use the registry to redecorate.

“Get new towels and get rid of the old ones.”

“Get a nice set of matching plates and donate the 4 mismatched sets you have.”

“People are going to get you presents so you might as well pick the things you want instead of getting a bunch of stuff you don’t.”

Hmmm.

My concern is that we plan on buying a place as soon as we can save up a down payment, and it’s hard decorating a house that you’ve never seen before. I do know though that my friend is planning a shower for me and I could only imagine the ‘opening of the gifts’ scenario if we don’t register…

Me: “Oh, uh, wow. It’s, um, lovely.”

Them: “Don’t you love it? I thought you could use another vase!”

Me: “Um, yeah, I’ll put it with the other 125 vases that we have. It’ll, um, complete our collection.”

Any suggestions on what to register for if you already have everything you could possibly need?

We have pretty much everything we could need (except a standing mixer and food processor, but we cook A LOT)– I plan to register for board games, some new pillows (our combined effors still leave us with some old dingy ones), a few extra sets of sheets, I’ve also been inspired to do a honeymoon paypal registry like another Bee is doing, and some organizational stuff to help me manage all the stuff we already have.

You could try the Bear Cub route http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/06/05/license-registration-please/ and put the savings towards a down payment :)

We’re in the same boat! We have a lot of home stuff already, so we’re upgrading some things. A nicer duvet/comforter, a Dyson vacuum, nicer dishes…things like that…but we’re sort of out of ideas on what to register for after that. (I’ve been avoiding registering for this very reason!)

Nice linens are always a plus. If you love to cook, getting staples like a stand mixer (don’t forget all the attachments like the ice cream maker- yum) are good ideas. If you are outdoorsy REI is always good too. :-)

We were in a similar situation and created a honeymoon registry.

You could just not register and get lots of cash to put towards your house down payment…

What about really nice bedding? We registered for a really high quality down comforter and duvey cover, and oh my gosh, it feels like we’re sleeping in a luxury hotel suite every night :)

That was also our concern, too, though: will this stuff work in the house we buy someday? We decided to register for the necessities (towels, sheets, duvet, etc) in neutral colors, and we didn’t register for decor so that whatever color schemes we decided on down the road, we could add pops of color how we wanted without it all clashing.

I can totally relate. We registered for a Wii, and are thinking about adding some camping equipment as well. We also started a honeymoom registry, but I have a feeling that people will not use it.

I would vote for nice bedding and games. Somehow we have a lot of duplicate stuff but don’t have any board games. We just got a Croquet set from a party and we have already used it twice. That and a nice dart board that my FI is in love with.

I love Mrs. Bear Cub’s route and I think Honeymoon registries are always fun. A lot of my FI’s family members have already said that they like getting people “experiences” instead of “things.”

I’ve got two suggestions:

There’s this site called the “Alternate Gift Registry” where you can put special personalized requests in for things you really NEED…like contributing to your downpayment or gift cards to specific stores (for future decorating). Here’s a link to a sample registry: http://www.alternativegiftregistry.org/view_registry_public.php?registry_uid=22

The other is registering for a kick@$$ honeymoon. A friend of mine registered for two trips: one was her husband’s ideal honeymoon (backpacking across Europe) and the other was her ideal honeymoon (a week in Tahiti). They ended up getting both trips completely paid for…and now they have some incredible memories to start their life together.

We’re upgrading our stuff via our registry. And also getting some decorations for the house. I’m excited about it, but we don’t really NEED a lot of it, they are nice to haves.

We have a lot of stuff too. But there were some things I wanted like new sheets, new comforter, some bath towels, and kitchen towels. Just some things that you can always use more of.

We’re in the same boat–a 1BR apartment with limited storage. However, we would like some new furniture, linens, and dishes, so we’re going with Crate and Barrel. We’re also registering at Best Buy :) Instead of registries, they do wish lists. We’re hoping there’s enough little stuff to put on the list (iHome, wireless mouse, etc.) to make it worth while, and then people can give gift cards so we can buy a new flat screen TV, MacBook, etc.

Think of something you and Mr. N want but wouldn’t buy yourself! Mr.M and I want a Keurig coffee maker but refuse to buy one since we have a already have a coffee maker. I want a really nice knife set also that I can’t afford and again can’t justify buying since we already have one.

I also think registering for a honeymoon is a great idea!

We already have 2 of everything. Actually we have 3 of some things…so we’re cleaning, organizing and condensing. There’s a whole new starter kitchen in a box ready for the next sibling that moves out of the house.

Then we’re registering for the items that we would really like to have, some are items for the kitchen, some will be new towels and sheets because frankly you can always use a few more towels and a couple more sets of sheets. Then for the rest of the items we’re creating a wishpot registry for things we find around the internet that we can’t possibly live without.

These gifts don’t all have to stand the test of time. They just need to be nice for now. If you move and your entire style changes it’s fine. You can buy new things then. But for now let your friends and family bu you something nice to make you smile. :)

You’d be surprised were you could register. Sometimes certain photographer will set up a registry for you so people can put money towards that. You can even register at Home Depot or Lowes if you guys need tools. Check out this link I would it will give you some differen’t ideas: http://www.brides.com/registry/topplaces/outdoors/

We were in the same boat. We both lived in a house and both had really nice things….i.e. we didnt need to go the redecorate route. We ended up registering at REI and also having our moms spread the word that we were saving for a big expensive trip to Europe. Which worked out to our favor. we got our camping gear and cash gifts. and no unneeded houseware gifts.
