About Mrs. Pudding

Bent Out of Shape

December 2nd, 2009 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Pudding

In my opinion, this is the defining photograph of a Catholic wedding ceremony:

Bent Out of Shape : wedding pictures Ceremon01
(photo of The Dumplings taken by The Cohens)

Bent Out of Shape : wedding pictures 00403 (The Hydrangeas, photo by Perez Photograph)

Come to think of it, I think that this moment is pretty universal despite of the type of ceremony that you choose to have:

Bent Out of Shape : wedding pictures B167140 (The Penguins, married by a family friend ordained on the internet. Photo by Sarah K. Chen Photography)

Bent Out of Shape : wedding pictures 12 (The Avocados at their Ring Ceremony, photo by Kelli Nicole)

Bent Out of Shape : wedding pictures 4014406 (Mr. and Mrs. Sushi at their Destination Wedding Ceremony. Photo by Frank Amodo)

There is something so tender and sweet about the moment when the to-be-married couple, in front of their friends and family, turn towards each other to utter their vows. The photos above really capture that moment where everything around the couple fades away, leaving only two people who promise to love each other for the rest of their lives.

It is really important to me that this moment is caught by our photographers as well. I do have one concern however:

I am a sloucher.

It’s quite possible that this is because of my height. At 5′ 9 1/2″ (short girls round up, tall girls round down) I certainly tower over most females in my life. But my height isn’t such that I am taller than many men, and I certainly don’t shy away from wearing fabulous high heeled shoes. Whatever the culprit, this is something that I am very concerned about for our ceremony.

It’s a fuzzy picture of Mr. Pudding and me, but you get the slouchy idea. I am trying to improve my posture by taking up yoga. I might also start doing the old book on the head routine that Mama Pudding made me practice as a little girl. I don’t care how fierce Tyra says this is, I do not want to look like this on our wedding day:

Any other slouchers in the hive? What are you doing to make sure that your bad posture doesn’t ruin your wedding pictures?

I totally know what you mean! I cannot stand it when I look back at pictures and I am slouching. It’s the same thing for Mr. Library. I am hoping that doing some practice shots and some yoga will make it all better!

I am a total sloucher, too! At 5′9″ I slouch alll the time. Yoga certainly helped. My mom used to put her finger in the middle of my back to force me to stand up straight. Yeah, lets just say that never worked. CW loves this, though - because he’s 5′91/4″ (he swears!) and that means he looks much taller than me. But in photos? Doesn’t look so great!

I’m bad about slouching. My mom gets on to me about it every time I see her. She always says, “Shoulders back” and I shoot back, “Well mom unlike you I have boobs!” So I blame my genetically large girls!

Omg! Me too. I’m also 5′ 9.5″ exactly. And my fiance is just barely 6′. I’m also having a very hard time finding cute flats to wear, so keep us posted on what you find (if you are wearing flats).

I was going to suggest yoga, until I saw you are already doing it. I find after a few consistent weeks of yoga, it feels weird and uncomfortable to slouch. (I’m also a sloucher, although I don’t think it’s because I’m self-conscious about my height… I’m 5′8″ and wish I were taller!) I know nothing that works better, honestly!

Fellow sloucher here! FI is always coming up and trying to straighten my shoulders for me - but I still tend to slouch. I actually think in my case it is related to poor back strength - but P90X is going to be fixing that for me!

I am a terrible sloucher and I always have been. I even danced ballet for 13 years and still have a terrible slouch when I don’t consciously think about sitting up straight. I grew very tall and very chesty very early so I blame in on wanting to hide my chest and blend in with the height of my friends while growing up. So far yoga hasn’t helped me…

Marjorie is fierce! But yeah, not so cool on your wedding day. I don’t think you look slouchy in the photo! You look natural. I’m sure you’ll be fine on your wedding day. :)

my fave tip way to remind myself to stand up straight and tall is to think about a string coming out of the top of my head and pulling me up….i find it works better to think about lengthening rather than just “stand straight/shoulders back.” if you lengthen through the top of your head the rest falls into place!!

I’m a reformed sloucher. I had awesome posture in high school, until one too many teasings (I’m approximately 5ft 11 and 3/4 inches - rounding!). Then the slouch kicked in, and poor TV watching posture in college. But future hubby has at least 6 inches on me, so I’m working to get my great posture back through Pilates (I even bought a Pilates ball to sit on at work!). Not only is the slouching disappearing, so is the mini-pooch I had with the slouch.

I am also a terrible sloucher! I tend to slouch more with my head and neck rather than my back, so I look like a turtle. It’s awful! My co-work sits in a Pilates ball, maybe I should try it too?

Does your wedding dress have a lot of structure? Mine did. I could barely bend over in that thing because of the corset. But man, my posture was awesome!

My posture has always been an issue. I, like Erin_E, slouch with my head and neck, so I carry my head in front of me instead of on top of my shoulders. Not great. It’s been a long time goal to finally work on this. I FINALLY decided to start seeing a great chiropractor who really understands posture work. I’m doing this for my own health (I have bad neck and shoulder pain because of my poor posture), but it’s a great bonus that I’ll look better/healthier/taller in my wedding photos!

Oh I definitely slouch. I’m 5′11″ and a lot of the people I work with are 5′0″ or 5′3″, so I find myself almost bending over a lot! I mostly round my shoulders and have to constantly remind myself “shoulders back”. My mom used to poke my sister (also 5′11″) and I in the back to get us to straighten up!

I have the same issue and have started working with a trainer to strengthen my core and sitting on a stability ball chair at work. I’ve been doing it for 3 weeks, and now I’m inspired to try yoga, too.

Just don’t take the hanger out of your dress. You’ll be fine.

@alishaneva: @misscalico: It seems like the mom poke is pretty common. Sister Pudding and I get it a lot!

@pec1216: I never thought about the effect the girls can have on posture…I’m pretty endowed myself, so maybe that’s the source!

@rachel_leigh: My mom is constantly lamenting about the fact that I would have been straighter if only she signed me up for ballett lessons! I’m very happy to know that they wouldn’t have made much of a difference!

@Goldilocks1107: I will look into investing in a balance ball myself!
