His Ring

December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:05 pm by Mrs. Nachos

His Ring : wedding rings 1 Heineken Ring

(um, no, this is not really his ring) source

When we were at Robbins Bros in the beginning of the year, we had looked at rings for Mr. Nachos. He found one that he really liked; the only problem was that it was a tungsten ring for a LOT of dinero. Now, don’t get me wrong—I’d pay whatever it cost to get Mr. Nachos a ring he’s going to wear for the rest of his life if he liked it, but we both knew that tungsten should never cost as much as they were asking.

If you don’t know what tungsten is, it’s a virtually indestructible material that never scratches, never tarnishes, and won’t break. You can’t have it sized, so you have to make sure to order it in the right size the first time.

There are lots of videos out there of people trying to destroy tungsten with sledgehammers, regular hammers, metal files, pliers, etc. I liked the sledgehammer video the best because it actually gets lodged in the wood beneath it, but they swear a few times in the video so I didn’t think it would be appropriate to post (it’s on YouTube if you want to see). Tungsten is pretty amazing actually; take a look…

We went home and looked online for hours trying to find the same design that we found at the store. eBay had an incredible selection of tungsten bands, but we couldn’t find the one design anywhere.

A few months have passed since then, and he’s brought it up a few times. So on Sunday, he went online and found one that he really liked, similar to the first one, and the price was right.

I ordered his ring that afternoon, we had it engraved, and it should be here (I’m hoping) by Friday. I promised him I wouldn’t show a picture of it until we make sure it fits and it’s the one he wants. I can’t wait to get it!

Did your FI choose a ring with an alternative metal? Why did you choose the metal that you did?

My Husband actually chose Tungsten for his ring with 3 small diamonds in the band. I seriously think I got ripped off though. I paid about 550 dollars for the ring, but then i went on amazon and found something almost exactly the same for less then 200!!! :( Oh well, he loves his ring thats all that matters!

My husband got a palladium ring. He wanted it to scratch so that when he was buried, his ring looked like it had survived a good long life. (His words, not mine!) And, he wanted it to kinda “go” with my ring, which is platinum. (He wanted an 8mm wide ring and the pricetag on that sucker in platinum was too staggering for us.)

My husband picked out a Tungsten ring at tungstenworld.com, and they were awesome. It was very simple, though. He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy :) It was only about $200.

could you please tell me where you got a tungsten ring engraved??

i would much rather give my man a tungsten ring rather than the titanium we are considering! everyone tells us that you can’t custom engrave tungsten and it’s very frustrating.

Mine got tungsten too! He loved the look of it and didn’t know anything about the material so the indestructible part is a great plus. We got ours from http://www.iweddingband.com

We got his tungsten ring off of Amazon. Seriously, if any of you are considering a tungsten band and haven’t bought one yet, look there first, because his cost $40 with tax.

please be aware ladies, there are different grades of tungsten used in jewelry.
if you buy a cheap ring, there is probably a reason it was cheap. tungsten with nickel binder instead of cobalt is much stronger. just fyi.

Mr. S went with Tungsten as well, and he loves it! The color is very unique, kind of a smoky color but also shiny - it’s great.

And, I think like what was said above - you get what you pay for and I think there are definite grades of quality out there depending on what it is made of. We didn’t get a crazy-good deal on his (I think it was around $300-400) but it’s holding up well so far!

@j.grossman13: We had to tell them what we wanted engraved on it when we ordered it - I don’t know if they can do it after the fact though. I think they did a laser inscription on it and we ordered it from http://www.debebians.com

Just a quick clarification/pet peeve of mine :)–your rings are probably tungsten carbide, not pure tungsten, assuming it was sold with the claim that it was scratch-proof. Pure tungsten does scratch–it’s Mohs hardness is 7.5 (similar to quartz or unglazed porcelain), whereas tungsten carbide’s hardness is 9 (equivalent to corundrum, or sapphire/ruby). I’ve only seen one jeweler that specifically states their rings are tungsten, and not tungsten carbide, and he also states that his rings DO scratch.

We got our tungsten carbide and titanium rings (in the $100 range) at http://www.titaniumstyle.com and they were great. They do engrave TC rings (though we did not do this). My husband’s TC ring is still scratch free and mirror shiny after 1+ year, while my titanium ring is dull and scuffed (need to send it in for refinishing!).

Cool! My husband picked out a palladium ring. It’s brushed metal, so it doesn’t exactly “match” mine, but he really likes it. :)

@Anya: You are absolutely correct, his ring is tungsten carbide, but I think most people just refer to it as tungsten cause it’s shorter and easier to spit out.

@Mrs. Mouse: His doesn’t match mine in the slightest either! But I wanted him to have something he loved so that didn’t matter.

FI’s is white gold. He knew he didn’t want platinum because he doesn’t like the color. I’ve never heard of tungsten until coming to WB! However, he is a teacher and doesn’t do strenuous work, so he shouldn’t have to worry about it breaking ;o)

FI wanted a tungsten carbide ring with a very specific pattern on it but they were asking over $300 at the store so I went home an researched. Lo and behold I found http://www.ringninja.com and found it for $54, seriously, it looks exactly like the one in the store, I was excited but skeptical but we ordered anyway and it’s amazing, I can’t wait to slip it on his finger.

Right, must show Heineken ring to hubby. He’d probably give anything to have me we a ring like that - his two favorite things in the world, lol!

We’ll be getting tungsten too. My fiancé works in construction so he needs a sturdy ring.
