Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

… And it’s through the earlobes, not the heart, if we’re being honest here.

My ears were first pierced when I was seven-years-old at a hair salon, and it didn’t go very well: the piercings were immediately infected, and Mama Spaniel didn’t want to do all the necessary cleaning to get them to heal and be healthy, and so we let them close. My ears were pierced again when I was sixteen, this time at a dermatologist’s office. I can’t remember if she used a gun, but I think so. It hurt, it got infected, but I was old enough to care for it myself and after several weeks, they healed and I was able to wear and change earrings for a few years without too much trouble. But I apparently got carried away by this ear piercing success and my ability to wear normal jewelry, got a second lobe piercing in each ear three years later, and had to start the whole healing process all over again.

But wouldn’t you know, two holes in your body in such close proximity tend to want to spread infections back and forth? I decided to take out the second set of earrings, and to put in a pair of hoops into the first hole that I knew were really easy to keep clean… but once I took out the pair that were already in the first hole, I couldn’t put another pair in: my lobe was too swollen. By the time the swelling went down, the first hole had closed.

So for nine years, I’d had unpierced ears, but a strong and abiding love of earrings. Not only do I love them, but I really, really wanted to wear a great pair of heavy chandelier earrings for the wedding day, so I knew I really needed to do it soon to make sure they were 100% healed before then.

So the day after my step-sister’s wedding (I would have hated to have red, swollen ear lobes to complement my green bridesmaid dress in her pictures) ;)—I went to a body piercing studio and got it done once and for all! I was totally being a baby about it, but I was scared. (Hold me!)

When I successfully got my ears pierced, I took a picture a little to share with you all (I am that dedicated: I got home and made Mr. Spaniel take a picture with my cell phone solely to post here), and I’ve learned two things from the experience.

Shot Through the Heart... or Pierced, Really. : wedding beauty jewelry 0809091737

(personal image)

For one, I have a freckle on my ear. I did not know that. And two, professional piercers are the only people you should ever allow to stick a metal rod into your body (unless it’s, like, a surgeon for actual medical purposes). It’s kind of intimidating to go into a piercing shop when you don’t look like you have an alternative bone in your body—it’s in my heart, man—but if you go to people who really know what they are doing they will educate you and treat you well, no matter what you look like. And I feel like I got better post-care advice than I did even from my doctor the last time I had my ears pierced, so there’s even a chance that this piercing will stick! I was so excited. They didn’t even hurt! And the holes are large enough that I might even be able to wear the earrings my aunts are sending from Pakistan (they usually have huge posts compared to what you buy here in the States). Yay!

I have suffered through so many infected piercings as well. The most horrific was when I got my nose pierced in England. Bad idea. Not that the piercer did a bad job, but for some reason the cleaning solution they gave me contained alcohol (a big no-no I later found out), so my new piercing sporadically gushed blood for the next three weeks or so. But I toughed it out, made it back to the States, and got a different cleaner and it healed just fine. But wow, what an experience.

I hope your piercings heal quickly this time!

Piercing in a body piercing place is soo much less traumatic than the fun - so, hopefully, these willl heal better for you!

You might want to look into Lobe Wonder or other little stickers that go on the back of the earlobe that help to support the weight of the chandelier earrings, so you can wear them longer with less pain.

My ears are pierced 6 (yes 6!) times (my teachers in school just loved that fact!). Only one piercing ever got a bit nasty but that was cuz I caught the back of the stud on a loose thread on a cushion (its the top of my ear thats pierced) and moved my head!! All manner of pain and a few choice words!

I hope your piercings heal in time for you to wear the earrings of your dreams :)

I got my ears pierced as a 4 year old in Poland using the old needle-and-a-potato trick. This was the only way you could get pierced ears (the communist state wasn’t really in favor of piercing shops). We had a neighbor who was a nurse, so she came over and did it. I have vivid memories of how much it hurt, but strangely enough it never got infected and I have the holes to this day!

What a great post and great advice! Piercing studios are definitely the way to go, even for seemingly innocuous piercings like ear lobes.

When you think about it - those guns are really icky and just begging to transmit infections. They are made of plastic and when they shove a fairly blunt solid object through your earlobe, it creates a spray of blood, that CANNOT be autoclaved off the gun because it’s plastic! In a piercing studio, they will use a hollow needle that actually removes the tissue from your ear (instead of just displacing it), so it will heal better, have less risk of infection and like you said, you’ll be able to wear larger post earrings.

I think it’s great that you got them done right at a studio and I hope they heal in time :)

Piercing studios are great because they use needles instead of guns for lobe piercings. Piercing guns cannot sterilized but everything a professional piercer uses can be. And piercing studios are more likely to have stainless steel or titanium jewelry. It sounds like you might have had a reaction to the metals used for your earlier piercings.

Good luck with your earrings!

Oh yes, you probably know this already, but stay away from nickel!

@Mrs. Mouse: Yep nickel is evil! If I wear cheap earrings my ears will get infected literally within a 5 minutes.

And my sister pierced my ears with a gun we got at Drug Emporium years and years ago…it was successful!

my grandpa was a jeweler who pierced ears (but no cartilage and no other body parts) with the gun. I got mine done when i was about 9.

I recently got my ears pierced (again) to be sure they’d be ready for my wedding too! I originally got them pierced when I was 13, but my dad insisted I go to a doctor, and the holes ended up in two totally different places on the ears, and I stopped wearing earrings. This time I went to a place in the mall, and so far so good!

I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced til… when girls become women… or I turned 16, whichever came first. Looking back, I think my parents may have been a little strict on that. They didn’t get infected, though, so I guess Merle Norman did a good job, lol.

yeek! A gun is really bad for you and is prone to causing problems! It’s always best to go to a studio and get it done with a needle.

You may have also been able to just reopen the hole. If you had a previous piercing, it’s possible to have them use a taper needle to open it up so you can reuse it, even if it’s technically closed. Does it hurt? Yea, kinda. But there is no blood, no re-healing process, no more of that damn salt water… it’s a lot less traumatic for your body overall.

If it happens again, definitely look into just having it stretched open!

I’m so envious of the girls who were able to just get piercings from the mall and not have them turn into total disasters! So far so good for me, this time, though… other than some itching (which is a normal part of the healing process), I haven’t had any issues at all.

@Mrs. Gummi Bear: I wonder if that would have worked? I took out my last pair of earrings over ten years ago, and the “holes” were just tiny scars by the time I got them pierced. Oh well! If I ever let them close again, I’ll look into it!

Body piercing/tattoo places are definitely the way to go for ear piercing. I got my ears pierced with a gun as an infant in the 80s and luckily I was fine, but those piercing guns can cause major problems.

Reputatable tattoo/piercing places are super clean and sterile, unlike the grungy image you think of (this coming from someone with several piercings and tattoos!)

I had my first & third set piercied at the mall, but the second set I did with some safety pins and a friends help. Suprisingly I’ve had the least problem with those as well! I even wore the safety pins for awhile which my mom LOVED. (ahh, to be 17 again…)
I also have my cartilege pierced on my left ear - that one was the worst. infected for months. it finally cleared up and now it is fine!

I have never had my ears pierced, and although I want to wear earrings really badly because I love them, I am too afraid to get it done!! I’m pretty sure if I go to a piercing studio all manner of freaking out and crying will ensue. I’m 24! My fiance told me I should ask a doctor for 1-2 pills of lorazepam and then go get it done. I have no problem getting shots, I’m just so afraid of getting pierced with a big needle all the way through!

Fingers crossed for you. I’ve been pierced…umm over 10 times I think, 3 are re-do’s that were done at a piercing studio [first ones were to but I had taken them out in the attempt to be "normal" but I'm not ;o)] and I never had any problems at all.

I was told to use saline solution for contact lenses in the metal can and all piercings have healed and I’ve had no problems.

I have gotten mine down 4 times, the first when I was a few weeks old (my mom was tired of everyone telling her how cute her little boy was!) with a gun each time and never had an issue. I want to get an industrial piercing in both but am worried that since I wear glasses it will cause issues. I have yet to find someone who has them that wears glasses daily
