Cue Music! : wedding ceremony music 1 Steel Pan

(source)

We’ve been finding that although our goal is to keep this wedding as uncomplicated as possible, there are still so many details to figure out!

In our wedding contract, we were allowed to choose what type of musician we wanted for the ceremony. Before we even got our choices, I knew I wanted a steel pan player because it goes perfectly with the beachy tropical feeling of our wedding. But now we’ve hit a road block…

What songs do we have the musician play?

I think we’re in agreement that we don’t want the traditional wedding songs like “Here Comes the Bride” and “Pachelbel’s Canon in D” (I know I’d bawl my eyes out more than I already will if that one is played). Scott found this video on You Tube that has a ton of wedding song options…

… but honestly, none of the songs really sound like anything I want to walk down the aisle to. So the search continues. I have always LOVED this version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole…

… but on a steel pan, I’m not sure how it would sound. I found a few videos of people playing it, but again, I wasn’t really impressed.

I found this one and I really liked it. It’s a steel pan version of Elvis’s “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” and I could see this one being played as our guests are walking in and find their seats, and maybe as I’m walking down the aisle…

Then for after the ceremony when we’re walking back down the aisle together, I think I want something light and fun and happy. Maybe something like this? (I know, it’s a little too cheesy)…

… or this? I’m a big fan of Bob Marley!

There are so many choices! (And again, I don’t do well when the world is my oyster, you know, the whole Libra thing and all.)

Which do you all prefer, or does anyone have any suggestions?

We used a steel drum band for our ceremony and reception. I wanted to use the traditional songs for the ceremony, but for the reception, I pretty much just let them do their thing. I found after talking to a few bands, that they have certain songs that they really like to play and can really suggest some of their favorites. If you can talk to the band beforehand, I would just ask them what they are comfortable with and what they recommend. They might be able to suggest a few songs that you hadn’t even realized sound amazing on the pan!

The steel drum at a wedding will always and forever remind me of the FRIENDS episode when Phoebe married Mike…YouTube it…it’s so cute and sweet. She played “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis

correction…She plays Elvis when the party comes in but when the bride enters they play “Here, There and Everywhere” by the Beatles.

I can’t help falling in love with you and One Love are the exact songs I’ve picked for our procession/recession!!! Also played on the steel drums at our DW.

I LOVE steel drums. They are so ethereal sounding. And that version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is me and my mom’s song.

I really like Can’t Help Falling In Love (it’s our first dance song, the Ingrid Michaelson version), and Bob Marley is awesome too!

@pec1216: I know the episode well!

I actually called the hotel and talked to the wedding coordinator and he said the stell pan player knows traditional wedding songs - the Wedding March, Canon D, Ave Maria - as well as calypso/island music so it may end up being Bob Marley….stay tuned!
