About Mrs. Nachos

Flowers are not high on our priority list, but I’m going to have to pick a bouquet and boutonniere based on the following flower choices. I’m not much of a flower person so I really have no idea which would look best in a bouquet. Here are our choices…

Actually, writing this post has been really educational for me since I didn’t know what any of these actually looked like ’til I Googled them for the pictures. I kinda like the anthiriums for a bouquet but I kinda want some color, so I really don’t know! I don’t like the birds of paradise but Mr. Nachos thinks they look kinda cool.

Which do you like best?

I really like the ginger, but I guess it’s more of an accent flower? I’d leave out the daisies, b/c the rest of the flowers have more of a tropical feel, and those don’t really go (in my opinion).

Have you looked at Mokara orchids?? They are in the color schemes that you seem to really like, they are a lovely size (my husby had three on his bout) and are called the “perfect orchid” because of their beautiful shape.

I would go with the cymbudium or dendrobium orchids, they come in so many colors and they’re really sturdy! I’d say definitly don’t do the alstromeria, they are VERY flimsy. As soon as they start to wilt the petals fall out SO easily.

I like the cymbidium orchids :) I am not sure how B.O.P’s would work in a bouquet, but they are very structural and would work well in centerpieces - just a thought!

We had a blanket of ginger petals down our aisle - it was gorgeous!

I would stay away from the Alstromeria. They are great for a budget and beautiful but too delicate to stand up to a whole day of hugs, photos, tossing, etc. I just directed a wedding last weekend that used them in the bouts and all of them were wilted and had lost most if not all the petals by the time the reception began.

I don’t know much about flowers either, but I really like the look of the Ginger. And I love the Bambi reference :)

I would leave out the daisies. I just feel like they don’t go with the overall feel of the other options and they tend to be overly used. Why not go with something a little different?

I’m with the posters above who mentioned flimsiness of alstromeria. I love birds of paradise but I know a lot of people don’t! I say go for the dendrobium orchids.

Any of the orchids are beautiful. Calla-lillies (looks similar to Anthiriums) are beautiful too and they hold up really well.

I am a big fan of orchids and calla lillies-but then again, that is what I am using in my bouquet, so I may be a bit biased :-0)
The ginger is really pretty too and not very common.

The flower you’ve labeled as anthirium is actually a calla lily….they hold up well in the “wilt” department because of the large stem, but they bruise easily. Birds of paradise are huge, although there is a smaller verson…but they still may be too large for a bouquet. Orchids are usually a great choice…this is my favorite orchid: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White_Orchids.JPG They hold up pretty well, but you still have to treat them as delicately as they look.

I’m curious if (and why) these are your only choices? I live in STT and you should be able to get pretty much anything you want ordered in by a local florist - of course taking into account the usual seasonalities of peonies and the tropical weather. I’ve seen all kinds of flowers at weddings down here from all roses to all orchids, spider mums, calla lilies anything! Tropicals do naturally stand up better in the heat and humidity but I wouldn’t limit your choices to only tropical since there are lots of hardier flowers.

My ‘tropical’ centerpeices had gingers, birds of paradise, lilies, callas and lots of other that I forget right now.

East End flower Shop has a website (just google their name and St. Thomas) showing some past bouquets, and a good friend who’s a wedding planner has a huge shutterfly gallery so let me know if you want the link (I woudn’t want to push anything on you you’re not interested in) and in general feel free to ask me questions - I’m a local and a recent bride so I’ll try to help if you need it!

I had a bouquet of cymbidium orchids and calla lilies and it was a beautiful mix of colors and textures (purple lilies and green/purple/pink orchids). I’m also a big fan of the ginger flowers and think they would add some great drama to a bouquet and would also look great on a bout.

@missrachelk: Thanks so much. Actually the reason we are limited is because with our wedding contract through the hotel, they are pretty much planning everything - down to the flowers. They gave this list of options in our contract and we get one bouquet and one boutineer of our choice (we can add more for a fee but we’re not having a bridal party so that’s really all we need). So the flowers are already paid for in our contract - no need to go to an outside florist. Thank you for the suggestion though and I will definitely contact you with some non-flower local questions!

If you want color, your anthiriums also come in red & a light green/yellow color. If it fits your color scheme, add a couple to accent the all white ones.

Me, I’m a Gerber Daisy fan…they’re my favorite flower b/c they’re soo cheerful & they come in SOOO many colors!
