Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

You Met WHERE?

December 3rd, 2009 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Online! Yup, on the interwebs. Mr. Guinea Pig and I met on Match.com, as I mentioned in my intro post. Don’t get me wrong, I knew there were plenty of crazies ‘out there’ (as one friend put it). It’s just that I also thought there were plenty of crazies in the real world, too. So I figured, why not give it a shot? It can’t be any more awkward than meeting someone in a bar.

Overall I’d say the experience wasn’t so bad. To be honest, I’d dabbled in online dating before, but had never really thrown myself out there and been willing to actually meet someone.

It started with Homer (names have been changed to reflect the person’s most… captivating… quality). He was the kind of guy I completely expected to find on an online dating site:

You Met WHERE? : wedding relationships Nerd nerd

(not actual picture)

Now don’t get me wrong, I love nerds – dorks, geeks, dweebs, what-have-you. I myself am a scientist who wears glasses (when I’m too lazy to put contacts in) – that pretty much puts me squarely in the nerd category. And Homer was, of course, incredibly nice! It’s just… he was the wrong kind of nerd. I’m the kind of nerd who loves learning. Any new thing really - whether it be knitting (in high school), speaking Russian (in college), or riding a motorcycle (in grad school). I enjoy playing Halo on my old-school Xbox, was late to understand ‘fashion’ (and may still be guilty of dressing awkwardly), and listen to NPR like it’s my job. Homer was just on another whole nerd playing field. The field where people quote the Simpsons constantly.

That may be awesome for some people (I have many, many friends who love the Simpsons), but I have a confession: I have never watched the Simpsons. Okay okay, I’ve seen a few random episodes. But no more than 3, I’m sure (much to Mr. Guinea Pig’s dismay). And when you’ve never watched a TV show that a person quotes to tell a story, make a joke, or to just generally carry an uncomfortable silence… it gets hard to smile and tell them for the 27th time: No, I haven’t seen that episode. It’s really true, I’ve never watched the Simpsons. Yes it’s a tragedy, I know.

Of course, this wasn’t the only thing in the balance of my decision, but for brevity’s sake I’ll just say: it wasn’t going to work out.

Next was … Milo (that sounds like an Emo name, right?).

You Met WHERE? : wedding relationships Emohips emohips

(again, merely a representative)

He was a jazz musician and at first it was fun: we talked about music (I play violin and piano and played in a jazz band in high school), movies, all the usual getting-to-know-you stuff. He wore his pants tighter than me, and weighed significantly less than me while managing to be the same exact height. I will admit, this made me uncomfortable. But probably not as uncomfortable as his pants made him.

Nothing really went wrong with this guy, per se – it just sort of ended. Of course I wasn’t really even concerned about it at the time, because I was talking to someone else who seemed oh-so-very interesting… I bet you can guess who! :)

But for that story, you’ll have to wait. This one’s To.Be.Continued. (such a tease)

Has anyone else tried online dating? Did you like the experience?

Glad to see a ‘bee with the elove! Met my share of Homers and Milos along the way (such as the guy who wanted me to help him buy tightey-whities since his mom wasn’t around to shop for him - can you say RUN!?!?!?!).

Never thought I’d meet my future husband on a dating site - but it happened and I’m glad, as I would have never met him outside the interwebs. And he’s the perfect mix of geek-chic, sports fan, and mechanical guru.

*raises hand* I did, and I still can’t really believe it. To top it off, we met online while living on opposite sides of the country (we now live together in Northern CA). I certainly went on my share of first and sometimes (rarely) second dates that were, uh, interesting to say the least. I got through it by giving them all nicknames and laughing about it after. One guy blew his nose into a cloth napkin at a table in a restaurant. You guessed it: Nose-Blowing Guy. Luckily online dating worked out in the end. We’re getting married in May!

@Miss Spaniel: That’s true, I never really thought about that - I bet there is a higher proportion of people who met online at Weddingbee!

Glad to see there are so many other bees who have met their fiance online!

I liked online dating. I used e-harmony, but not for the ONE. However, more than a few of my friends have found their forevers online. It’s cute!

We’re the couple that you referenced who “met in a bar.” Cliche, but true! And yes, I don’t think online dating is any different from bar-dating.

Oh, and side note: I totally dated an emo guy who was skinnier than me before Mr. FF — it made me slightly uncomfortable, too!

Fun post! It’s so interesting to read about people’s exes, though it seems like a taboo topic.

we met online also, Yahoo personals. I was actually ready to kind of give up on the online dating thing for a while, I had met too many toads, and then I get an email from this guy… we agreed to meet and truthfully I only decided to go so I could get out of the house that friday evening. Little did I know.. he would be the ONE!!!

YAY for online dating!

Yep, met Mr. Bluespurrs on cupid.com!
I do not drink, so bars hold no interest for me. I just wanted to met people and do a little socializing! The first three “matches” were not good, all wanted to have sex almost immediately! I’m no prude, but hey, shouldn’t we at least kiss first? I almost gave up on online dating then I met Mr. Bluespurrs. A month later, I knew he was “the one”!
