Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Everything Blue

December 4th, 2009 @ 4:55 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

A little darker; not quite so periwinkle; brighter; not that dark; more vibrant; too teal…

When I picked our wedding colors (I’ll be fair: no use of the royal we here unless ’we’ really did it) and Mr. Guinea Pig OKed them, I had no idea just how difficult a task I had embarked on. All I knew was that blue was both Mr. GP’s and my favorite color so it had to be in our wedding, and pale yellow seemed like a nice match.

Since we knew we wanted to have the ceremony outside, I wanted a blue that would really stand out, as well as go nicely with a waterfront setting. I had the perfect blue in mind; a dress I had bought about a year before specifically because the dress color on the mannequin in the window drew me in.

(sorry for the beheaded picture, but gotta love that blue)

This would be so easy, I thought - I’ll just get my bridesmaids this dress - it’s perfect! Much too easy. Not only is that dress from two seasons ago, but they don’t even have that color in their line anymore. And thus began the quest for the perfect blue. Once I was sure my first dress idea was not an option, I decided I didn’t want to make all my girls wear the exact same dress anyway, so I set out to find a line with a bunch of cute options in the blue I wanted. I looked high and low, ordered samples from 7 or 8 different lines and almost had myself convinced that some other blue would be close enough. After going to a dress store with my friend/bridesmaid Lauren, I excitedly came home to show Mr. Guinea Pig a picture of the ’close enough’ color I had found… to which he said “that looks a lot like periwinkle”. Ugh, he was right - how does he know what periwinkle is, anyway?!

Frustrated, I gave up on searching for bridesmaid’s dresses for months, and figured that when it came to the point where I had to make a decision, I would settle for whatever was closest.

Did you start out with a very particular color in mind and try to match it, or did you find a cute dress and use that as your color? If you had a color in mind, how long did it take you to find it? Did you just decide to go with something ’close enough’?

I LOVE your inspiration boards and am totally stealing them (with proper credit, of course) to show our florist and wedding planner - we’re doing blue and yellow too!

Love it! We’re also doing blue (and the title of your post totally got me - this whole time I’ve been thinking “something old, something new, something borrowed, and everything blue”). We’re doing sort of a lighter/dusty/antiqueish blue (it’s hard to put in words) with a creamy/super pale yellow for the flowers. It always had to be blue - it’s our favorite color too. The challenge is definitely finding things to match.

I loooved French Blue for a long time during our wedding planning process. But alas, it was too cold for a fall wedding.

I used cornflower blue from DB. It looked electric online, but had just the right french blue color I was going for in person. It also photographed really well.

i had the same trouble finding a blue that was “perfect.” my solution: my BMs are wearing shades of the blue that i picked so if something is off, no one (myself included) will care!

@froggy518: yes! I always say it that way to myself too :)
@lisabrueck: I had high hopes for cornflower, but in person it was lighter than what I had in mind
@BirdofaFeather: Smart lady! Now that I look back, that’s what I wish I had done.

We totally were going to do blue & yellow (I changed my mind approx. 168 times) and that first inspiration board is still saved in my wedding file! :) Good luck with the dresses!

Ohhh, please tell us when you do find the right blue! You and I seem to be going for the same color - I’m doing royal blue (of the darker variety) paired with lime green and a bit of bright yellow. The BMs have clamored for blue, not green, but I want just the right one…

I had the same problem!! I had a perfect blue and a perfect green in mind for my wedding colors. There is not a single bridesmaid dress in the whole world with either :( So, rather than settle for a less than perfect blue, I’m having my girls wear simple navy dresses and we’re accenting with ribbon sashes and beaded necklaces in the colors I really want. I think it’ll be great and, by choosing a really basic color dress there were a TON of choices and my girls were really happy with what they found.

That blue dress is hot, too bad your BMs can’t wear it. But at least you get to wear it! Looking forward to hearing more about the dress search in the perfect color!

We’re not going to have a bridal party, but I’m having the same issue trying to find things in just the right color for our party back home. Difference is, I am looking for periwinkle. Too funny :)

@ebs1123: I will definitely keep you posted!
@Miss Cola: I’ll admit, it’s my staple going-to-a-wedding dress! I love it :)
@Miss Nachos: Ha! I’ll have Mr. Guinea Pig find periwinkle for you - apparently he’s good at spotting it ;)

We’re also thinking of doing blue and yellow. I don’t really have a specific shade in mind though, so I think I’ll probably find the dresses first!

Ugh, I feel your pain on getting the perfect color. I kept looking for “pale pale pink” but nothing seemed to be pale enough! I love the shades of blue and yellow you’ve picked! I’d call it “cornflower blue and butter yellow.” Whaddaya think?

Ooh, I love that blue color, too! And I’m so not a blue person. I can see why you were trying so hard to find it!

This is my exact wedding palette too! But our blue is slightly lighter.
