Bouts for the Boys

December 5th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Did you know that wedding boutonnieres can cost upwards of $20-25 dollars EACH? Are you kidding me? It’s a little flower (that most guys hate wearing anyway) that goes on a guy’s jacket (which then gets taken off immediately after pictures - bout never to be seen again)! Ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that we have one groom, eight groomsmen, two dads, three grandfathers, and a Godfather (that’s 15 men). Holy crap.

So, I decided I could probably make them myself, and I figured none of the guys would mind very much. My inspiration photos are shown below.

Of note, the first one is made of fake flowers (a florist informed me of this). Notice that they both have more of a berry-type look than a flower-type look. I feel like berries are a little more masculine than flowers (that seems funny as I type it). :)

Here are my DIY boutonnieres for the boys (& men):

They each have raspberry-like purple berries, some white berries, some cute tiny green flowers and leaves with a black satin ribbon wrap.

Now, I only made 13 bouts. I figured that Mr. Burger and Brother Burger (who is the Best Man) should probably get some real flowers, since they are special people :) - plus they are more likely to be photographed.

Here is the inspiration for their floral bouts:

Lone flower (probably ranunculus or anemone) with some berries (for us this will likely be some baby eucalyptus (very cool-looking sage alternative to the bright green hypericum berries).

I’m looking forward to seeing Burger’s flower bout, but I am also satisfied with the ones I made for the rest of our special guys. The cost for this project was probably about 10 bucks, total. :)

Did you DIY your bouts?

Wow - those look amazing! Great job! I’m not DIYing my bout’s, but thankfully my florist doesn’t charge nearly the cost you mentioned.

oh, they look great! that’s a LOT of money for a bout! I don’t recall being quoted that much, maybe around $15-$20, which was still expensive for one dang flower with some ribbon wrapped around it!

I’m DIYing Salmon fly bout’s in our wedding colours for our men! I come from a family of fishermen, and we’re getting married on the river, so it fits!

That’s great, Cheeseburger! Awesome job. I remember being appalled at bout quotes, too.

Great job. We DIYed them as well. But it’s nice to have them (almost) checked off the list.

We got quotes between $7 and $15 for bouts… a little less painful, but yours look fantastic for a lot less!!

My mom’s best friend DIY’d 10 bouts and 4 corsages the morning of my wedding… and then everyone promptly forgot to hand them out. I find it amusing that it was such an unimportant detail that not a single person remembered it until the end of the night when we found the bowl they were all collecting water in. Very glad we didn’t spend a fortune on them. All in all, they probably cost under $1 a piece, so no big loss. I would have been devastated had we spent over $20 each!

You did a great job! I DIY’ed our bouts too using sea shells and sea fans that the Fi and I collected from vacations (a more personal touch)! They come out so much cheaper and personal when you DIY!!
