Dressing Up the Invitations

December 5th, 2009 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

Some of the wedding sites I’ve seen have given me real postage stamps envy. A collection of vintage stamps sprinkling the envelope? What a great idea! But a quick search on eBay indicated to me that it takes more than a quick search to find beautiful old stamps.

I guess I can just keep my eye out for beautiful old stamps, but I suspect every other wedding blogger out there has already bought all of the non-canceled ones by now, so I’m moving on.

Another source for pretty Dressing Up the Invitations : wedding postage Social wedding postage stamps seems to be the custom design route. I’ve seen a lot of custom stamps that mirror the invitations really closely, but I think that tends to be design overkill. If I went this route, I’d definitely go with monogram stamps… maybe in complementary colors between the invitation and the RSVP. I think it would be a nice, clean look that would match our invites better than the USPS stamps currently available…

What did you do to dress up your wedding invitations? Do you have any experience with custom stamps?

I went the vintage route, and it was a bit of work, but not too bad. I had fun looking for them, at least!

We actually weren’t too concerned with what the outside looked like cause ours were in a box so the packaging wasn’t very pretty to begin with. I love the idea of your monogram on personalized stamps though.

I love the look of vintage stamps! I just don’t have the energy to worry about pretty postage. That may change once I actually start doing invites, but as of right now I’m sticking with plain ‘ol stamps.

We used the King & Queen of Hearts regular postage stamps.

i’ll be hopefully adding a little border around the mailing address but that’s it for the envelope. i really like the king & queen of hearts stamps but i don’t think i’ll be going crazy trying to make everything match.

I have been designing custom invites and postage stamps for brides for a few years. Vintage stamps are very popular - as well as monograms. Some brides like stamps to match their invites - but most just want something different for their postage. You can contact me at http://www.perfectpostage.com if you’d like custom stamps.

We thought of doing the same thing. The antique stamps are so gorgeous! Then, we started hunting and realized what a lengthy search it would be. We decided we’d just get the King of Hearts/Queen of Hearts design that’s so popular right now.

One alternative we thought about was buying some of the stamps that come in weird denominations and and simulating the effect with non-vintage stamps.

To be honest, this one just crosses the line for me. I had a second of thinking that personalized stamps would be fun, quickly followed by a realization that I had been spending TOO MUCH TIME reading wedding blogs.

I love the old stamp look. I can’t decide how I feel about custom stamps - mostly I’m not sure I can afford them! I’m sure your invitations will look beautiful no matter what you choose!

I love the vintage looking stamps, but I dont think I’ll have the time to search for them :( and the costume made stamps I’ve found are kind of pricey so I think (if I dont have time to find vintage looking ones) we are just going to try find the ones closer to our colors

Very pretty! I haven’t thought about our invitation envelopes yet. I really like the current holiday stamps, although those may not work for our spring wedding. : )

The outside of our envelopes were white and cream, so the Love stamps fit the colors really well. It was super simple, and I decided no one would really notice if the stamps were ugly except me!

I really like the quirky king and queen heart stamps, so that is what we went with. I thought about custom but the details were starting to pile up, so I let go.

The vintage stamps are lovely, but you’re right, a lot of work to find. And the custom stamps are pretty expensive too! I think for our invites we’ll probably just use whatever the USPS has.
