I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!

April Showers Bring May Flowers

December 7th, 2009 @ 11:45 am by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Who knew Twitter would play such a role in planning our wedding?

After reading a post from Mrs. D’orsay about following her vendors on Twitter, I decided to track down my vendors (two of whom happen to be the same as hers, so that was easy - thanks Mrs. D’orsay!).

That move turned out to be a good idea, as it’s how I decided on our Save-the-Dates!

Well, maybe decided is too strong a word. :) But now we had a direction to go in! Back in September, I looked at my to-do list and thought, ‘Yikes! If we want to send out Save-the-Dates in October, we have to get moving on those!’ I posted my thoughts on Twitter, and asked if anyone had any ideas. A few hours later, our officiant replied with: “Since April showers bring may flowers, maybe ’plantable save the date cards’ that turn to flowers.”

Genius! Guests can hold onto the cards as a reminder until we send out our invitations, which will be the perfect time to plant them for spring flowers! Not just that, but the ’flowers’ theme seems to be popping up (pun totally intended) everywhere in our wedding, from the invitations (which I will show you down the road when we send them out), to the paper flowers I’m folding, to the stamps I have for embossing things (I haven’t decided what, yet)!

(My paper flowers - an idea from Miss Poodle [here’s the original tutorial], and embossed cherry blossom stamp)

I’m so excited about this great idea, and Mr. Guinea Pig loves it, too! Most of the paper I’ve seen used in plantable paper is recycled, as well - so this is a great eco-friendly option: recycled paper, plus it’ll be planted when the guests are done using it for its information! There are so many cute options already out there; we just have to decide if we want to design it ourselves, or if we love one of those choices enough to just go with it.

(this is technically a favor, but I like that it’s the flowers that are plantable!)

Have you used plantable paper? Any tips? Do you think we should order pre made cards, or is it easy to run plantable paper through a printer?

i had the exact same idea for my june wedding! we sent our std’s out on plantable paper and everyone has been LOVING them! i can’t say for printing though, because we had them letterpressed professionally. the paper was from porridge papers: http://www.porridgepapers.com/ - handmade, dyed and embedded with seeds, and the paper is just fab! we’ll definitely be using the same paper for the invites.

That’s so cool, and it’s cute that it works with the May showers.

P.S. I follow my photog on twitter, and I felt super excited when he followed me back. I’m such a dork.

I love plantable paper! It’s my backup idea in case our first favors don’t work out!

Those are really pretty! STDs are my biggest concern right now, since I’ll have to get them done and over with in about a week!

We got the Love Blossoms as a favor and they were really nice - we planted them and wildflowers came up :). Just keep in mind there are rules for mailing seeds overseas if you have international guests - we won’t be using these as STDs/invites for that reason, but we might use them as programs.

@KMSull: we delayed so long in making our STDs that it was a real rush out the door when we finally decided what we were going to do!
@edb: Hm… that’s a good point! The paper we bought actually came from Canada, so I figured it would probably be fine to send it back in card form :) So far, most of our international guests have gotten them, but that’s a good thing to keep in mind!

Great idea! The last one is really cute–you should steal that idea of the border across the bottom!

I have seen this paper numerous times, but have never used it. I’ve always wondered if it actually “works” (as in, flowers growing after you plant it). Would love to see the results, if anyone has them!

@Miss Hamster: Some people were so excited to get it, they planted it as soon as they got it! D’oh. :) I guess we got so caught up in our own idea, we forgot that other people wouldn’t necessarily know we meant for them to hang onto it until our invitations!
