Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

All in all, I think I have tried pretty hard to be as considerate of my bridesmaids as possible. I set a price cap (for myself) on how much the dresses would cost (anything over $200 and I’d foot the difference—which made the urgency of an affordable dress much more… URGENT!), and I paid the surcharge on the plus size dresses (for my decidedly NON-plus size bridesmaids… darn you, bridal industry sizing!) without telling anyone. I picked a dress that I hope will be re-wearable (I would wear it), but if not, at least it’s pretty. In fact, I gave everyone two choices on their dresses, to make everyone comfortable.

I’m not insisting they throw pre-wedding parties for me, or that they have their hair and makeup professionally done, or even that they do much of anything at all for me other than show up on time and not complain too much. ;) So, I would also like to continue to be considerate of them, my top five ladies, in selecting their bridesmaid gifts! (And also considerate of my ever diminishing wallet!)

Bridesmaid Gifts, Part I: Quality or Quantity? : wedding bridesmaid gift Pure Pa 193x300

So, I took some time to think about what I would like as a bridesmaid.

I’ve been around the bridesmaid block a few times and I wanted to avoid distributing little trinkets that didn’t mean anything or that weren’t quality. My first idea was black cashmere pashminas. I found some online at such a good price I almost don’t believe they are real! I thought to myself: ‘I would like a real cashmere pashmina, and black goes with everything.’ But if I bought these super affordable pashminas (which were only affordable by standards relative to the $200-300 price tags I usually see them carrying, not to my bridesmaid gift budget!), I wouldn’t be able to afford any accompaniments, like customized tote bags or any of the other cool things running through my head that I might have appreciated more than yet another bath and lotion set, if I were in my girls’ position. And even though I would love this bridesmaid gift, I can’t be sure that all of my bridesmaids would.

So I did what any sane, sensible, decision-capable bride-to-be would do: lose sleep over it!

But not to worry; I did eventually make some decisions, which I’ll tell you about… later. :)

Did you have a hard time figuring out what to gift your ladies?

I have a travel accessory line with really cute bags for any type of girl or price range. the lingerie bags or cosmetic bags are a big hit. I have a lot of brides get different items as bridesmaids gifts and seem very happy, I have also had bridesmaids who have been gifted items come looking for matching pieces.

I can also do custom order to match brides weddings. Just a thought since you were wondering about gifts that are useful and fun.

Bridesmaids gifts are hard because you want your BMs to love them, you want them to be personal, and you want them to be affordable, but not “cheap.” I’m sure whatever you decided will be great!

I vote for quality over quantity personally. I am opting to get my ladies fabulous custom Wendy Mink earrings, but that’s all I can afford. I was recently given as a bm gift very cheap earrings, an awful cheap necklace (like people were LAUGHING at how bad they were) and a cheap tote bag that got ink stains all over my clothes. While I appreciate the gifts, because it is definitely the thought that counts I would have preferred one small thing instead of the literally huge blown glass jewelry and inky tote bag.

I am still trying to decide. i want to get them something that fits their personality and tastes but as well as I know them I wonder if I’ll make the right choice.

I probably sent too much but I wanted them to have nice gifts and I had to get them jewerly to wear with they dresses because they weren’t happy with my suggestion to just wear jewerly that they already had and liked.

I’m doing a black satin clutch bag by Jessica McClintock (to wear at wedding but I think also quite usable), sterling silver gemstone jewelry I made myself thanks to etsy (I saw the same thing for $50 just for the necklace) and a “guayabera” linen dress since it’s a Cuban/Miami themed wedding.

I found some good, reasonably priced pashminas on etsy through a seller called TieOneOn. She also makes ties which I’ve seen mentioned on WeddingBee for bridal parties as well.

Yup. I’m still working on it, but looking forward to seeing what you came up with!

Yes! At the time, I even flipped through one of Oprah’s magazines on the 50 (or was it 100?) best bargains and found something in there. :)

I think I’m going the quality not quantity route. One is traveling from London, so I don’t want to give her a big bag of crap. So one is getting earrings from Tiffany because she’s been talking about a certain pair for eons and the other is getting a ring from a jeweler that specializes in recycled metals. I’m really excited about the pieces and want them for myself, so hopefully that’s a good sign.

I’m struggling with this too — everything that I like is waaaaaay out of budget when you multiply it by 6 bridesmaids!

I agree with giving quality items. I am going to get them their jewelry for the wedding and a wrap of some sort since none of them like showing their shoulders. But I can’t wait to see what you found!

@diorable: That’s how I’ve been making a lot of my decisions: if I like it for myself, I don’t feel bad about wanting it for my girls. Of course I know these girls from all parts of my life and we don’t all have the same taste at all, so that does make things harder!

@Miss French Fries: Exact same problem. What I could do for three bridesmaids doesn’t work as well for five!

Still trying to figure out what to get for my bridesmaids - definitely want it to be something they will love and use, instead of random tchotchkes!

That’s pretty much how I’ve been going through with my maids, too! If I wouldn’t want it/wear it/do it, it’s a no-go. It’s only fair that you consider that!

This was hard - especially with 5 girls! I decided to do 5 custom silk clutches from etsy that will complement their dresses (in fun colors!), flip-flops for dancing, “street scarves” in colors to match their dresses, and a little survival bag with aspirin and things from the container store. Plus - I did give them each a $50 gift card towards their dresses and I’ll be covering hair/makeup on the day. Little pricey but they deserve it :)

I’m covering $30 towards hair/makeup, buying their shoes (I get a discount) and jewelry, so I’ll probably get them 1 gift as a thank you for being there for me. Luckily, I have a small party (3 girls) so I should be able to find something of nice quality!

I also went the pashmina route and got them from Etsy, specifically ClassyWeddings. While not cashmere, they’re very soft, and were all under $20. I also plan on getting them monogrammed to make the gifts more personal.
