STDs and You

December 7th, 2009 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Nachos

I loves me a good double entendre…

STDs and You : wedding save the dates Double Entendre

(source)

I have to be honest here, I never actually understood the purpose of STDs (and of course I’m referring to nothing other than Save-the-Dates). I look at an STD as a sort of warning. I have never gotten an STD that really helped me at all though, because they force a person to stop and think about their distant future (and I don’t normally plan things that far in advance). I’ve been given all sorts of STDs - STDs of all different colors, fancy STDs, what the heck is this STDs, even STDs that stick to my refrigerator. To some, STDs can seem like a nuisance and be a bit irritating.

You get one and think to yourself, “What the hell am I supposed to do now?”

You talk to other people that have gotten an STD from the same person as you and they’re just as confused.

So you call a friend and ask for advice. “I got this STD and I don’t know what to do with it.” Your friend tells you to look at it and maybe show it to your significant other.

In the end, since travel arrangements needed to be made, we did what everyone else was doing and gave STDs to our family and friends.

I looked around online at different options for something that went with our theme, and here are some of the cute ideas I found (yes, I am now totally referring to save-the-dates)…

Paper Glider Save-the-Date

Starfish Magnets w/ Personalized Tag

STDs and You : wedding save the dates Std3

Flip Flop Luggage Tag

(source)

My future mom-in-law actually suggested luggage tags and Scott and I loved the idea. We went with these….

Let’s Celebrate! Luggage Tags

(source)

I made the inserts in Microsoft Word, printed them out on nice paper, then put them on top of the inserts that came with the tags. They were mailed out on a Saturday and almost everyone had gotten them by the following Tuesday, even our guests on the West Coast. The postal service actually came through and helped us spread our STDs very quickly!

Here’s the finished product (date and website were blurred out for privacy reasons):

Finished Product

When I got a call from my mom letting me know that she got the STD, she asked what she was supposed to do with it. Apparently she didn’t know what it was and thought it was pretty enough to wear as a bracelet. An STD bracelet? I’ve never gotten one of those. I told her to put her STD on her luggage. None of my sisters knew what they were, either. I guess after staring at the STD for so long, I just assumed it was obvious what it was. Oh well. At least in the future, I will only be on the receiving end of STDs, so I won’t have to worry that someone won’t know what I gave them.

That’s a relief.

This is a fantastic STD idea! How funny that people didn’t know what they were, though :)

I love your thoughts on it… Personally, I think STDs are very important. As we have a lot of out of town guests, I think the typical 6-8 week invitation notice is not enough for people who will be flying thousands of miles (and booking hotels, and renting cars…) As most weddings aren’t all inclusive, its nice to give the out of towners a heads up!

And I LOVE your idea!

Lolol - great post. And I love the STD you chose to give. And…I’m totally immature too. I refused to type out “STD” on my posts because I couldn’t stop giggling.

what do people think about only sending STDs to OOTs if the wedding only has a few OOTers?

Hilarious — this is a great post! People who got our STDs didn’t know that they were from us (evidently because they didn’t show our faces, people thought we used a clip-art picture. Really? ….Really?!!?).

lol. That paper airplane one is actually pretty cool. The luggage tags are pretty thoughtful, good choice!

Great post! hehe. Can’t believe someone thought it was a bracelet. Sounds like something my MIL would wear. ;)

Our STD’s were very informational (having a destination and all), people thought they were the actual wedding invites…a year in advance. ::shakeshead::

omg this post is freaking hysterical. Informative yes, but mostly laugh-out-loud funny :) I’m glad you were able to settle on an STD that was cute, informative, and useful. Never thought I’d use those words together!

I love this post! I completly agree. We are personally not sending out STD’s becuase both of our families are so big that we are hoping some people won’t be able to make it :)

I feel like a dummy…I’ve been sitting here trying to figure out the ‘peony’ pun for about half an hour. I know I’m going to have a total ‘duh’ moment, but could someone please explain?!

@Jennycakes: Too funny! That’s actually how I usually am with jokes, a lot of times they go right over my head, then 5 minutes later I’m all, “ooooooooohhhhhhh”.

def a clever way of sending a std. I could see why some may have been confused by not knowing what to do with them…nothing shocks me in the wedding world anymore, ha! From the picture they almost look like cute little picture frames!

I think stds are a great way to give a heads up to the guests in the event your wedding is near a big holiday or simply to let ppl know you’re engaged! Our guests loved ours and we put magnets on the back, so they quickly figured out to either put it on the fridge or throw it away once you’ve reserved the date on the calendar.

I’m glad you were able to successfully distribute your STDs to friends and family! I’m sure they took one look at the STD you gave them and were thrilled to see it, pass it along to neighbors, even display it at work for colleagues and bosses to see.
