About Mrs. French Fries

I’ve grown accustomed to thinking, ‘We have tons of time before the wedding, no need to worry about (insert wedding detail here) now.’ The wedding has always been some far-off, in the distance event that was sort of hard to picture in my head. Remember: we got engaged over 400 days ago, and we had over 600 days between our engagement date and our wedding date. 600 days! It’s no wonder that the wedding has always seemed so far off in the distance.

Sometimes when I’m planning a specific facet of the wedding, it feels like I’m planning it for someone else’s wedding (that just so happens to be much closer than ours).

Last Friday, Mr. French Fries and I had an appointment to look at linens for our reception (yes, he went to the appointment, too!). I’ll blog about them separately, but we picked out what we think will be a fabulous option, and I’m excited about them. Sometimes it seems like they’re not going to actually be there the day we get married, however. All of these moving parts: the cake, the linens, the flowers… they’re all going to come together at some point, and that point will be our wedding. That concept is still hard for me to grasp at times.

I feel more prepared for the idea that Mr. French Fries and I are getting married – that part has definitely sunk in and I’m beyond excited for our marriage. However, the wedding… or perhaps, more specifically, the reception is still sort of an amalgam of ideas, colors, details and images in my head. I’ve tried creating an inspiration board from pictures of actual items that I’ve made/things that we’ve booked, and that helps… but the final product is still a bit blurry when I picture it in my head.

For those of you with long engagements, does/did it ever seem like your wedding was so far in the distance that you couldn’t picture how it was going to come together?

YESSS, It is like you read my mind! I have very slowly be ticking thing off the list, and recently started with reception details- florist, BM dresses, things like that. The fact that I now have to pin down some coherent “theme” or at least a group of colors is hard, especially because there is still 10 months between now and the wedding! It does not seem real at all.

Yes, it definitely felt like this for me during most of our engagement. It all started coming together maybe 6 weeks out or so?

Yes!! You are so right Miss French Fries, we are very similar - this same thing happened to me all the time. I was making all these paper flowers, and kept thinking - these will be pretty somewhere - yes Miss GP - at your WEDDING. Only when I thought about the ceremony did I think - right, we are definitely getting married. Luckily in the last month it has really started solidifying, once we got under the 6 month mark I felt like it was actually going to happen!

Yep. I threw out all the planning checklists right away since I was so far ahead on almost everything, I figured I wouldn’t need them. Who would have guessed, getting complacent put me out of the planning cycle for several months, and now I’m worried I’m going to put off way too much of it until the last. Maybe it’s time to dig up one of those checklists…

Good LORD! I could have written this *exact* same post. We had a 22 month engagement and now we’re just over 5 months away. I still don’t know how everything is going to come together, but I have faith that it will. It’s definitely hard to plan for something SO.FAR. in advance. I’m glad I’ve had all of this time, but damn I just want it to get here already!

OMG I feel just like that! Like I’m planning this fantasy party that is never really going to take place. We started at 600+ also. We will make it!

I swear you are my long lost sister. I know exactly how you feel! Even now, with less than 6 months to the date, I still feel that way! I’ve also taken to creating separate inspiration boards- “wardrobe”, “ceremony”, “reception” etc!

Rainbow- I LOVE that idea of separating out the inspiration boards! You just cleared out so much clutter in my head! I am doing that as soon as finals are finished :)

Our wedding is almost exactly one year after our engagement, but I’m still amazed that it will all come together. And actually, I say amazed, but I’m a little bit terrified.

I’m the other way around, I’ve done nothing but imagine how it will all come together! Time is sneaking up on us June brides though, it will be here and over all too soon!

You took the words right out of my mouth! It’s nice to have the time to think and not feel rushed but it also makes it seem a bit more surreal, I think. The main thing helping me with this is I’ve attended a reception at our venue so I can sort of get the “feel” for the space. But I still can’t picture walking down the aisle or cutting our cake!!

I definitely felt like this! That’s why I tell people to have a shorter engagement :) Things didn’t really sink in/come together for me until we started receiving RSVPs and we had an accurate headcount. By that time, we had most of the details finalized and a good picture of how it would all look.

But to be honest, you really can’t picture it completely until you see it. We had a pretty good idea of how it would look, but when we saw our reception room, it was everything we thought and more. It probably has a long to do with the excitement of everything, but yeah, that’s how it was for us :)

Nod to Death Cab…love it!
(and I feel your pain…I had to do all those things, but from Singapore for a wedding in Scotland. It only felt like ‘our’ wedding when I got in the car to the church!

@eastwestbride: you beat me to that!

but really, I went and turned on Manhattan because of your title. So very excellent.

I’ve found that my wedding has seemed like that all the way along–we’re five and half months out, and have been engaged three months, and I am having a crazy time trying to patch all my ideas together. It’s particularly bad because I am horrible at matching things.

Glad to know that there are many other bees in the same boat as me! :)

@eastwestbride: @darling blackbird: I’m glad that you both got my obscure DCFC reference — I love it when people recognize my (sometimes somewhat odd) song lyric post titles!
