Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.

Not-So-Humble Pie

December 8th, 2009 @ 12:20 pm by Ms Potato Chips

I will do anything for some free dessert. Including being sneezed on by a cow.

Let me back up.

Mr. Potato Head and I decided early on that we didn’t want cake. I always think cakes look better than they taste. No offense, cake, I’m just not that into you.

We made the immediate decision to serve gelato. I mean, immediate. I mean, we saw the gelato vendor at the bridal show and I just about fell over them throwing out blank checks. We haven’t yet narrowed down flavors but I look forward to a tasting in the spring, where I will enjoy all that yummy gelato roundly!

Back to the cows. We decided, in lieu of cake, to go with pies, which led to us driving down to Rhode Island this past weekend to visit a dairy farm + bakery.

Do you see that look in ol’ Bessie’s eye? This photo was taken about three seconds before she attacked, and by attacked I mean she sneezed, or made some sort of cow-noise, whereby I screeched and jumped a mile.

Animal encounters aside, we immediately loved the dairy farm and bakery. The cozy little bakery was packed with shoppers (a good sign) and jammed with heavenly smelling delectables, from light-as-air chocolate cream pies to strawberry shortcakes piled high with freshly whipped cream to jugs of coffee milk, a Rhode Island classic. It was love at first sight. Nothing fancy, just fresh and homemade and distinctively “Rhodie”.

The proprietor sent us home with two kinds of pie to taste: a chocolate cream pie and an apple pie. Naturally I couldn’t wait the two hour drive.

Neither could Mr. Potato Head:

Don’t worry; we were parked.

We tasted the apple pie later that evening and ooohh boy was it good! A perfectly flaky and buttery crust filled to the brim with sweet and tart apples with just a hint of warm cinnamon.

The most difficult part is next: deciding which ones to serve!

What kind of wedding dessert makes you drool?

Ahhhhm nom nom nom, me wants pie now!

And we’re serving individual strawberry shortcakes for dessert instead of having a cake!

Sorbet, actually. I’m still kicking myself for not making room for that in the budget! The pies sound great!

Oh my word I love pie! I would have had wedding pie if Mr. Library wasn’t so in love with cake, so since I am so in love with him, I thought a nice traditional cake (but also delicious!) would be great. I love the idea of gelato though!

We’re going the cake route. It’s the only thing we can bring into our venue - everything else has to be provided by their catering staff (at an exhorbitant price!). But I would love to have some truffles . . . mmm.

i looove desserts period. well, except for most fruit pies because i’m not a fan of baked fruit. but because i can’t say no to cake [unless there's coconut] we’re having cupcakes. because i have an unhealthy obsession with cupcakes and, well, my guy loves to see me happy. lol

Why not serve BOTH pies?! We’re planning to have 3-5 flavors of pie at our wedding since FI has declared a strong anti-cake stance. I wish I lived nearby so that I could go buy myself those pies you pictured- soo delicious looking!

Definitely serve them both! We had 4 different pie flavors at our wedding and everyone loved them…I didn’t even get a bite (and I am the one who wanted to serve pie in the first place).

@rabbit: Yes, that’s exactly what we plan on doing! Narrowing down their selection to 5 flavors will be tough, though; they all looked so delicious!
@Mrs. Cowboy Boot: I’m glad your guests liked it! Your pics looked scrumptious!
@Miss Trail Mix: Ooh that sounds yummy!
@tea: For some reason I like cupcakes more than I like cake…maybe because they’re so gosh darn cute.

we are so jealous of your gelato! Although hubby is such a snob about it, he only likes the kind in Italy (eye roll)
Sounds like a fabulous line up of desserts!

That sounds like a great combination! Things you love, isn’t that what your wedding day is all about! Hubby loves cake, and I would eat dirt if you put it in a chocolate fountain. So, we got a little baby cake to cut, and a big ol’ chocolate fountain!!!

You should serve both! They look so tasty.
On a side note though, I am a little saddened by the number of people on Weddingbee who claim to dislike cake. Perhaps you just haven’t had the right cake? Cake is good! …as are pies (or any other dessert-like food) of course.
