As you might remember, we’re getting married during lent, which means we need to limit the decorations in the church. Though it’s a happy time for us, it’s a solemn time for the church, and we need to respect that.
I think lanterns lining the aisle is a simple, understated touch that we could pull off easily without offending anyone. I had saved this picture a while ago:
Lantern, candle, a little floral touch - perfect.
I found some small, black lanterns at Michaels and some LED flickering tea lights:
And then I added some flowers and a bow (althought I’m not sold on the bow yet):
Voila! Simple, pretty, understated. They will hang from the pews with more of the green ribbon.
Do those flowers look funny to you? They should, because they’re made of clay:
You can probably tell a little better in these pictures.
Like Miss Poodle, I too took up making flowers out of clay. Since she already did a great tutorial on her roses, I won’t post another. They are basically the same steps, except that mine do not have stems or buds - but they would be great additions!
I was initially inspired by Mrs. Pineapple’s flowers from DK Designs. Diane uses Clay Craft by Deco clay, and also teaches at their academy. It’s a special kind of polymer that does not require heat to set, and it dries light as a feather. You can purchase your own supplies here (unfortunately, they’re not cheap, and I recommend getting a LOT of the white for mixing colors!).
It was really therapeutic to make all of these flowers after a long day at the hospital. It’s actually pretty easy. I have lots of different colored clay that I mix together to get the colors right (or as close as possible), then sculpt the flowers individually with some of the tools you see below. I would love to do a tutorial on some of the other flower types, if people are interested!

Clay flowers have lots of benefits. We don’t have to worry about the flowers wilting, or assembling the flower/lantern combo (they will be pre-attached). All we will have to do is literally tie the ribbon to the pews, and we’ll be ready to walk down the aisle!
How are you decorating your aisle? Are you interested in learning how to make various clay flowers?
