Mrs. Hamster's Picture
Mrs. Hamster, New York City Age and Occupation: 28, Finance Gal Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance Guy Engagement Date: March 9, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Pierre Hotel About Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
About Mrs. Hamster

There’s nothing quite as jaw-dropping as an ugly bridesmaid dress. While there are some super cute styles out there these days, there are a TON of not-so-cute styles. While wading through the sea of organza, taffeta and satin, there were three things I was looking for in particular:

  1. Not outrageously expensive. Like Miss Spaniel, I set a $200 limit - anything over and I would pay the difference.
  2. Long and formal-ish. Our wedding is going to be somewhat fancy-pants, so I was looking for dresses that matched that.
  3. Could possibly be worn again.

Unfortunately, these stipulations ruled out the gold lamé. Darn.

My MOH/sister and I visited three stores that specialized in bridesmaid attire for “your special day” (shudder). There were quite a few doozies, but a few passed muster. The first that was “okay enough” was this champagne number by Amsale:

MOH-ster really liked this one, but it was a whopping $330! Whoa. That not only means that I’d max out the $200 limit, but I would also be forking out an additional $720 on top of that (since I’m paying for MOH-ster’s dress). Bleh. And while I felt the dress was nice enough, I didn’t think it looked amazing.

Next!

I loooved the color of this next one (although each dress could be ordered in any color) but once again, it was outrageously priced. Onward…

The next store had a wider selection, budget-wise, of bridesmaid dresses. The following actually was within budget, but the fit left much to be desired - even though this is a size 2 gal trying on a 12, something was off. Besides, look how thrilled MOH-ster looks to be wearing it:

… and so we moved on.

The next had a bit of an interesting back, but the front was pretty shapeless, despite some pretty severe clipping on my part.

As you can see, we were literally ankle-deep in BM gowns. I could just picture the headline now: “Two Asian Girls Found Smothered Under Pile of Not-So-Cute Dresses.”

By this point, we were getting frustrated and cranky, from the lack of appealing, affordable dresses as well as skipped snack times (girls’ gotta eat). At the third store, we found a dress that MOH-ster and I really liked:

Trying to Say Yes to the (Bridesmaid) Dress : wedding bridesmaid dress Bm6 bm6

so we inquired about the color options and price. I was disappointed to learn that the dress didn’t come in a midnight blue, but I was willing to consider the eggplant since I thought the style was quite beautiful. But THEN I found out that this dress was also way above budget. Come on, people!!

I was thoroughly disheartened after this bridesmaid dress search. Almost all of the dresses we saw were outrageously expensive for the quality received, not the most amazing styles, and honestly, not the most flattering (and all my BMs are petite and/or slender, so quite a few styles look good on them!). I felt as if the label of “Bridesmaid Dress” automatically yielded a price premium for compromised quality. What was a Hamster to do? Stay tuned…

Did you also have trouble finding nice bridesmaid’s dresses, or was it easy peasy?

I also wanted to keep the price down but I found it really hard to find flattering dresses that were under $200. And my girls are wearing shorter dresses so you would think they would be cheaper! We decided on a Dessy dress and I was able to call around and get it for $223 (I have 7 girls so this might have helped). If you find a style that you like you can barter with different shops to get a better price…though probably won’t be able to turn a $300 dress into a $200 one.

Like you all my BM’s were teeny-tiny..the largest was a size 2 and the smallest is 00. I was able to find a beautiful Jim Hjelm for a little over $200 for them that totally complemented their little figures. It wasn’t the one that I was looking for, but when I found it, I knew it was the one. Keep your eyes open for unexpected jems.

We ended up with Alfred Angelo dresses - worked well for the petite and not-so-petite girls. I think it came in at $180 or less. And can be worn agan if they alter them into cocktail length.

That last one is really pretty, but there is no need to pay over $200 for a bridesmaid dress!

I’m in the middle of this same problem right now! All of my girls have great figures so you wouldn’t think it would be difficult . . . I think since I only have four we may go with “regular dresses” instead of official bridesmaid ones. I also really like the bridesmaid dresses from J Crew although they don’t have as much color selection for the long dresses.

We had the same struggle. My ladies have been awesome through the entire (lengthy) search. We just found THE dress for them this past weekend. Our wedding is also formal so we were originally looking for long, but the dress we ended up going with is stunning, cocktail length, and under $200! Hope you found something great!

I like the shiny satin one but that material is really unforgiving! Lucky for me, no bridal party=no bridesmaid dresses :)

o0oh man! That last one is gorgeous! What is it with all these mondo-expensive BM dresses? I don’t know ANY BM that would be cool with spending over $200 on their dress, so who are they making these dresses for?!

My search was pretty easy, even though I thought it would take forever. It turns out that David’s Bridal had a dress that fit all five of their different shapes and sizes! Good luck in your search!

I have had the WORST time too! I want them to be long, which seems to be crazy in wedding world these days, not to mention twice as pricey for a couple yards of extra fabric.

I think I’m going to check out Dilliard’s formal section soon with my fingers crossed.

This was my least favorite part of wedding planning so far! I went to so many stores and dragged multiple bridesmaids to each one because I wanted to make sure they liked it. We eventually found something that I am happy with although I don’t love it. oh well, at least that part is over.

Go to Priscilla of Boston! I love their BM dresses!! My bridesmaids are wearing Melissa Sweet style 326 (silk organza one shoulder with beautiful flower detailing). There were so many others that we liked there though. For long dresses, they run anywhere from 200-350 i think. The one my bm’s got were $298 but since there were 4 of them they took 10% off.

Agreed, bridesmaid’s dresses are the biggest ripoff for quality, I was shocked when I went to some stores at how a $250 dress would be so poorly made and use such cheap quality fabric…I ended up with JCrew and I’m happy with ‘em but man, it was a pain to make that decision!

This has been the most difficult thing and I still haven’t figured it out. It’s complicated by the fact one bridesmaid lives abroad and the other several states away from me, so there’s no girly shopping.

We’ve found a local Indiana seamstress who had really great referrals and can allegedly make anything, so now we’re just trying to find a dress we can order for my Londoner and have the seamstress copy it :) But man, just doing that is a pain in the bum. And yes, under 200$ has been an absolute must.

They’re all pretty, but I agree that BM dress prices are ridiculous! Can’t wait to see what you end up with!

And here I thought I was alone! I only have two bridesmaids who are gorgeously tall and who would wear burlap if I asked them to- but this process was painful! I think they’re beautiful so obviously I want them to look good standing up there.
We wanted long and eggplant for a reasonable price, and the search was painful.
We ended up going with the Victoria’s Secret Convertible dress. It’s so pretty and totally re-wearable.
So glad to be able to cross that off my list!

Your MOH seriously looks good in all of them! But I do love that last dress. We’re keeping ours under $150, and found them pretty fast once we started looking (if you lived in Chicago, I’d take you to my store!). Best of luck to you, Hamstini!
