A Friendly Discussion (Over A Salad) : wedding relationships Goatch Goat+Ch

(Source)

Mmmmmm, doesn’t that salad look delish? I like to think so, but Mr Trail Mix has other ideas…

I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning of our story. A few weeks ago, Sir Mix-A-Lot and I sat down with our caterer to hash out the menu details. She had emailed us her first draft of our menu a few weeks before and the thing that got me the most excited was her salad description:

“Mixed greens topped with raspberries, pine nuts and goat cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette.”

That’s some serious yum right there, in my mind. It’s actually my favorite salad ever (I don’t really like salad or vegetables, so that’s saying something!). Mr Trail Mix, though, was less than thrilled. He felt that it was a “girl” salad and that the those with the XY chromosome pairing might not be so into it. I felt that that was an utterly ridiculous concern and said so. A few huffy words later, the subject was dropped and we decided to wait until our meeting with Debbie (our caterer) to get back into it.

At the meeting, everything started out smoothly. We decided on a rental company, oohed and ahhed over the appetizer selection, easily chose our main course dishes and were thrilled when Debbie said she could do our strawberry shortcake dessert.

But the salad debate, oh the salad debate…

Needless to say, it took a lot of discussion (sometimes heated, mostly on my part) for us to reach a decision. There was much tightening of the vocal cords, eyebrow raising and finger-gesturing, but we finally came to a conclusion everyone felt happy with… we’re going to have two salad options!

Since we’re serving our food family-style, Debbie said she could just as easily have 2 smaller bowls of salad on the tables as opposed to 1 larger bowl, so we’re adding a classic Caesar as the other option. Bonus, because that’s my second favorite salad and now our guests can have all the salad their little hearts desire.

So I guess the moral of this story is:

  1. The bride always gets her way.
  2. Since rule number 1 isn’t exactly fair, it’s nice to try as hard as you can to help the groom get what he wants, as well.
  3. Try to find vendors who can offer you various options so both the bride and groom can get their ways…
  4. If you and your fiance are really at an impasse regarding an important decision, refer back to rule #1…

Anyone else have a “friendly discussion” with their fiance over something stupid (like a salad)?

Love the rules. Love your salads. Mmm, I know what I’m having for lunch now. :) Nice to see that you and the mister could come to a compromise.

Love your rules, even though Mr. KM doesn’t care much about the details of the wedding other than where we have the ceremony, who officiates, and what beer we have at the reception. Oh, and the font on the invitations? Salad, he wouldn’t care about.

I actually really have to agree with your hubby to be on this one. While I think your salad #1 looks delish as well I don’t think it’s a good crowd pleasing one. Some people just like a good ol romaine lettuce with tomatoes & carrots kinda salad.

Ha! Must send Mr. Guinea Pig this post… Glad you got two salads out of the ordeal though! (Also glad you got to keep salad #1 as an option, it sounds deeeelicious)

I’m with you Trail Mix- Salad one all the way. Mr P would agree too. Hate to hate on the Ceasar but I don’t find it all that exciting. :-( I guess I’m a salad snob. Yay for comprimise though! :-)

i gotta say– I’m glad Sir Mix-a-lot stood his ground on this! I HATE salads with fruit and/or vinagrette. I’m always disappointed when there isn’t a “normal” (i.e. garden salad or caesar salad) option. Sounds like guys had a great compromise though. :) and i’m a girl btw!

Love the rules! And salad #1 would be both of our choices - we’re both big on raspberries and goat cheese. Can you tell we’re NY food snobs? ;)

We have totally had the salad debate, but we have yet to pick a winner. FI wants a strawberry salad and I want a spinach salad, but neither of us want a traditional garden or ceasar salad. We need a three salad option!

Haha, I never thought of salad as gendered!
We are having a salad much like your first one. We’re big into fruit/salad/nut combo. I’m sure your guests will love having a choice between the two!

it’s funny how something like salad can lead to such contention! but you guys came up with a great solution–as a guest, i would probably take a little of both!

We didnt necessarily have a “friendly discussion” about salad but we did have the salad debate. I, like you, like the “girly” salads with goat cheese or blue cheese, apples, etc. DH likes Caesar and thats it. Im fine with either so we went with a Caesar salad and I let him have his way :)

Great solution for you though, Id be eating both salads if I was at your wedding!

HAHA! My fiance thinks that salads in no way should encompass fruit, nuts or ‘weird cheeses’, so I think it’s funny. I would eat both if I were coming to your wedding, I love salads with lots of stuff and at home that doesn’t happen….b/c I’m lazy.

Our silly debate wasn’t over salad, but wedding colors. My fiancee (now husband) decided he absolutely 100% hated the color green. It came completely out of left field. I never in a million years thought he would care at all about bridesmaid dress colors or tablecloths, but by golly, green was outlawed. There were to be no green and white bouquets either.

Imagine me trying to complain about this to someone. “My fiancee hates green and it is really bothering me.” On this one, I gave in, because if he was going to form such a strong opinion on something I didn’t care that much about, I was happy to “give in” and have leverage on other debates going forward!

My hubby love ceasar salad as well, and I would MUCH rather the first salad. Who knew salads could be gender specific. Love your rules:)

love it! ours was very similar but went more like: Me- I hate salad; Him- I love salad!; consensus: no salad- asparagus instead! Rule #1 prevails :)
