Trusting Your Wedding Party

December 10th, 2009 @ 5:09 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

It seems that many brides, including me, are jumping on the bandwagon of letting the bridesmaids choose their dresses within certain guidelines. But what about the guys? Can you trust them?

See, we aren’t designating which suit the guys have to wear, we’re just telling them that they need to wear a grey suit. However, as I think about it, I’m staring to become a little terrified. OK, a lot terrified.

There is some hope, though. Brother Fro Yo has more designer gear and style than I do, so I’m not worried about him. I told him that I wanted the guys to wear grey, and he asked me what shade of grey. Um… he’ll be fine. However, what about the rest of them? They’re Mr. Fro Yo’s friends, so I’m really relying on him to spread the news and determine the appropriateness of each friends’ suit.

However, as the months tick by, and the guys don’t have their suits, I’m really starting to freak out. I am constantly forwarding sales and suggestions to Mr. Fro Yo in the hopes that he will send them on to the guys. But maybe he needs more encouragement. I’m sort of at a loss for what to do, though.

Is anyone else letting the guys choose their outfits? What have you found works best for getting them in the store and pulling out their credit cards to purchase something? And how do you know that the suit they choose will be appropriate?

:sigh: I’m in the same boat. We’re really leaning towards buying suits vs. renting, but I’m nervous about unleashing TEN guys and having them all come up with something different. Good luck! (report back with any tips!)

And, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t just scroll up twice to see Bradley Cooper’s fine, fine mug in the post picture.

I thought tuxes were much easier for exactly this reason! Good luck!

Same boat- although as of right now we haven’t given the boys any instruction yet (whoops!- maybe we should do that) I think the only thing they know is that they are wearing Chucks.

Thanks girls. Yeah, tuxes sound good right about now, but then when I see that Off Saks has buy one get one free suits right now (because yes, they do), then I just want them to RUN to that store and split the cost. Is that hard?

Cool idea to let the guys dress themselves!

And I loved The Hangover- to me the funniest movie this year!

Now you’re making me nervous! We told our groomsmen to choose their own suits (black) and so far only 2 out of 5 have them. My little brother keeps insisting that he’s going to wear his black pinstriped suit (with red pinstripes!) which couldn’t possibly clash more with his steel grey/fushia tie and fuschia pocket square. Argh!

Oh, Miss Fro Yo, I feel you. My fiance was recently in a wedding where the men were told to choose their own black suits–I begged him for three months to purchase something. When did he end up getting the suit? Three days before the wedding. It might end up being the same for some of your guys. I guess you just have to have faith that they will all get it together and show up with a suit.

Oh we are in this exact same boat! Mr. Guinea Pig chose what the guys are wearing and just told them to wear black suits. Luckily all but 2 already own a black suit! But now I’m inexplicably worried…

We’re letting the guys where the black suit of their choosing and we’re providing the ties. I’d like to think the most of them already have a black suit, but I still plan on cracking the whip after the new year (when we’ll have about 4.5 months to go). And by cracking the whip I mean hacking into FI’s email and sending the GMs stuff from him. Hehe sneaky sneaky, I know.

We told the guys to wear a charcoal grey, three button suit, with black shoes and a white shirt, and we would buy their tie (so they all had something matching) I was TERRIFED in the days leading up to the wedding. Of course I was dissappointed to see one guy went with a 2-button suit, and one had a lighter grey suit (not charcoal), yet it all ended up looking awesome! As soon as they all had on their boutonnieres they looked like professional groomsmen! So don’t worry!!!

oh, and some of these guys did not even get suits until a week before the wedding! Don’t let them freak you out, it will turn out okay!

We took the same approach with our guys, who were spread from Austin to Finland…and I’ll be honest while it made logical sense it almost drove me crazy! Not a one of them started looking at suits until 6 weeks before and the one that was that early was only because he needed it for a funeral! Finally in the 2 weeks before the wedding they each called in that they were all “suited” up. I’m happy with how it turned out but I can’t say it didn’t create a few grey hairs in the process.

oh, and I should admit that at 3 weeks I threatened to call one groomsman’s mom if he didn’t start suit shopping ;)

@AprilBride10: Let’s try not to be terrified together, sound good?
@carrie.a.s.b: Yes, I’m trusting that they will all show up dressed in grey, that’s really all I can do, but it’s so hard!
@AbbieOinCO: Thanks for the tip@ggsb: Ha! I think I might do the same!

It’s hard to find an inappropriate suit! I think as long as they care enough to find a suit they will be fine and since they are in the wedding I’m sure they are.

It’s perfectly possible to walk into any decent store and walk out with a gray suit for a guy so they could do it the day before in an emergency. Unlike the poor bride they are unlikely to be terribly busy in the run up to the wedding. No worries. :)

Though I’d be a bit annoyed that if you are worried they can’t just go ahead and do it early for your sake.

You are a brave woman! So many shades of gray, but the differing colors could look really nice.

We told the Dude’s groomsmen to wear black suits. One of them had to borrow a suit from the Dude, but the other two already owned black suits. The best man asked me a couple weeks before the wedding if it was OK if his suit had faint pinstripes and I said of course. You couldn’t even tell in the photos. You’d be surprised how if you just give them all matching ties, the look comes together pretty easily. I’m sure it’ll work out for you!

I would be a bit scared too! We’re doing heather grey tuxes from the Men’s Warehouse (that actually look more like suits) for just that reason. Good luck, hopefully your guys figure it out!

I got my fiance to tell his guys to pick out their own light gray pants & vest, but I haven’t heard anything from any of them. I am planning on sending out my own e-mail to them all soon with a picture of fiance’s suit and some inspiration pictures to get them on the right track!
