Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

I’ve been a regular exerciser for as long as I can remember. Gym, training for a marathon/road race, yoga, strength training… it’s always been part of my day-to-day, like brushing my teeth or not making my bed. When your fiance’s a personal trainer, with his own studio where he holds small group classes consisting of all your close friends (Mr. Potato Head even trains my parents!), it’s hard to come up with excuses. Usually I don’t even want to; I like working out. It does a body good. More than that, it does my mind good.

And then this happened. I took a doctor-recommended hiatus from exercise. And then grad school happened. All of a sudden I was awash in papers and classes and teaching and long hours of commuting.

I did what I could: took the stairs up to my fourth floor office. Walked the 1.3 miles to the train station. I probably could have done more. I know I could have done more. But when I did try to “push it”—push-ups and cardio and that extra mile—I suffered from days of soreness in my chest, a sure sign of Too-Much-Too-Fast-itis.

Lately—especially now in the throes of Eating Season—I’ve felt sluggish around the edges. Let me confess: I just ate half a sleeve of Trader Joe’s Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s. Things are starting to pile up—work, school, and certainly, wedding planning. I need to push myself out of my slump, and get this body moving.

My goal: I’m not looking for a number on the scale or a size. I’m looking for renewed, improved athleticism, for health, energy, longevity with my future husband.

What Have You Done Today to Make Me Feel Proud? : wedding fitness 113 1

Walt Disney World marathon, 2007

By June, I want to:

  • do 75 push-ups in a row (before my surgery I was at 60ish)
  • work up to comfortable 5-mile runs (also something I could do before surgery)
  • do 1 (one) REAL pull-up (I have never been able to do this!)

I’ve been bugging Mr. Potato Head to develop some good fitness routines to share with the hive. Look for them coming soon!

Will you join me? Or at least hold this couch Potato Chip accountable? What are your fitness goals?

General fitness is my overall concern right now. Between graduating college and starting a desk job 2+ years ago…I never recovered completely from the lifestyle change. I just recetly committed to getting back to yoga and the gym. Goals: not score ‘poor’ on flexibility, actually WANT to take the dog for long walks, and get rid of flabby upper arms! I’m with ya!

I pledge to take the physical challenge with you!

Also, I’m going to get my “exercise” after work today by walking the 1 mile to Trader Joes before getting on the T, all for the sake of those Joe-Joe’s!!

Also, can’t wait to hear what Mr. P Head shares with the hive!

Umm, I’m totally with you. I ate a dark chocolate snickers bar…and maybe some licorice…and a Mrs. Field’s cookie last night. And this isn’t really out of the ordinary.

looking forward to see what Mr. Potato Head comes up with!

I’ve never been able to do a real pull up either… :-( If you find something that makes that happy- I’ll be one happy Pretzel.

P.Chips, you couldn’t have said it better - I too am not looking for a size or number on the scale. Just looking to FEEL good and strong. My goal is to be able to do at least one pull-up unassisted. I am doing P90X right now, and I LOVE it because I can do it at home and I am beginning to see results. I can now do chair assisted pull-ups, and by the end of the program I hope to be doing pull-ups with the best of ‘em. GOOD LUCK!!

I’ve always been so jealous of self-motivators when it comes to exercise. I should be ashamed to say, I just don’t care enough and it doesn’t help that I really HATE it. Kudos to you!

Love it! I haven’t been able to self-motivate since starting law school (so tired, and the promise of more energy hasn’t been enough!). Looking forward to his tips!

I would love to!!! I started a ‘bootcamp’ type class at the end of October, (A M-F 5am hour of calisthenics type workout!!) and as it draws to a close next week i’m going to continue to need motivation.
I go on winter break for grad school at the end of next week and have SO many DIY projects, wedding planning, etc that I HAVE GOT to keep on top.
I FEEL you in the boob department!! I hate dress shopping so much, my waste-boob ratio is on average 2-4 sizes different…so much stress!!

Keep us posted chips! While my fitness level has never been as fantastic as yours, it’s where i’m heading to as an overall goal :)

I just had a strawberry cupcake (with extra frosting) 5 minutes ago - now you’ve motivated me to add a little cardio before my Pilates workout tonight!

Oooo, get the Mr to give us some tips on how to get the ultimate toned arms! Since the wedding dress covers everything else, the arms have to be killer!

Oh no! The candy cane Jo-Jos! I’ve been eating them too, like it’s my job or something. I have also suffered this year from a serious decrease in my amount of exercise. For me it’s due to a new job the involves 2 hours of commuting each day. By the time I get home I’m exhausted and it’s late, so there’s no good time to work out. I like your goals, and you’re inspiring me to make some for myself as well :-)

I’ve been semi-working out regularly since June with one of my bridesmaids, and yesterday, I shoveled snow for 2 hours and wasn’t sore this morning. It was the first moment where I realized exercise really works.

I’ve always liked working out once I get going, but the getting-going part is always tough.

My goals are pretty simple: I want a healthy BMI (It can be 24.9, but I want it!) and I want to make exercise a regular part of my life.

I’ll join! My fitness goals are:
*work out 4-5 times a week, even if it’s just doing 20 minutes of Wii Fit
*feel good in all my clothes again!

I *never* worked out before I started graduate school. Ever. (At least not out side of PE in high school.) Soo…in college, I, understandably, put on a few extra pounds. Nothing too serious, just a little around the tummy and thighs. I’ve been trying to work it off since then but I’ve found I’ll work out diligently for about a month and then not at all for 2-3.
SO! I am definitely up for being in on this :) We should totally (if everyone’s ok with it) keep track of our progress on some communal page. I dunno about you guys, but if I don’t have to be held accountable to someone, it’s going to be much harder for me to go through with this.
(How’s that for long, mostly unnecessary and slightly hi-jacking comment?)

Great goals! I’m thinking of doing some for my New Year’s resolutions…but no way will I ever be able to do a 5 mile run like you!

Wow, you are awesome! It’s great that you’re setting such goals for yourself. I don’t think I’d ever be able to run 5 miles - I’m just trying to get through my Buff Brides workout!

Grad school is the opposite of a good time to start working out or maintain any healthy behavior [i.e. eating, sleeping, showering, etc.].
I hate going to the gym but I enjoy running, so my fiancé [also a personal trainer] finds ways for me to work out at home. My fitness goals include having higher self-esteem [whether that means weight loss or not] and toned arms [ala Michelle Obama].
