Cake Topper, Check.

December 11th, 2009 @ 11:40 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Traditional cake toppers are pretty much a thing of the past these days. Most brides (& I guess grooms, if they care about that sort of thing) just choose a monogram, some swirly heart, or flowers (real or sugar) to top their cakes.

I really, really, really wanted something a little more traditional. I don’t know why, but I just did! When I first started looking for cake toppers, our honeymoon plans were to head to Disney, so these options seemed cute and fitting:

The precious moments one reminded me too much of my Communion statues, so that was out. And the wedding Mickey and Minnie? I just couldn’t see it for some reason… I thought maybe it was because it was so “bridal”.

That’s when I came across these:

The boat is so different, and it was actually Mr. Burger’s favorite, but in the end it was a little too big (like 8 inches long!). For me, well I just couldn’t get enough of the teacup! It’s so adorable, and even able to be personalized! I loved it. In my mind, I was convinced that this would be our cake topper, and that it would be able to be displayed in our future home for years - reminding us not only of our wedding day, but also our honeymoon!

But, things change. To put it bluntly,

Disney during the Easter season is a rip-off. It’s easily 1,500-2,000 dollars more for the same vacation taken one month earlier or later - an added expense we couldn’t justify, seeing as we’ve both been before and plan to go in the future (I’ll do a full post on our new honeymoon plans soon) . :)

Soooo, it was back to the drawing board, trying to find a new cake topper. I guess we could have kept the Mickey & Minnie statue, but I just didn’t think it would really fit in anymore.

I have always been in love with Lladro, and swooned over their gorgeous statues both online and in person (both Cheeseburger Mom and Mom Burger have some). They are gorgeous and creamy and shiny and wonderful…

These beauties, however, are HUGE (like 9 inches tall) and EXPENSIVE (retailing between $600-800… and up.), so yeah, they were out.

BUT, then I found something so totally perfect: not too bridal, not too big, really, really cute, and even a little touch of Lladro:

Meet our cake topper. :) It’s Nao by Lladro (basically a less expensive line) and it’s called “Together Forever”. Being huge dog lovers, I knew it was perfect the minute I saw it! I love that the wedding-ness is really understated, so it won’t look weird in our living room after the wedding. It’s also a really great size - 4 inches wide x 5 inches tall, so it will fit perfectly on our top tier, without overpowering the cake (or sinking into it). The colors are pretty neutral, so I think it will look pretty with the cake as well. Best of all? I got it at 50% off the retail price on eBay.

I’m glad I can finally cross this off my list!

What kind of cake topper are you using?

I love the teacup! I am a total Disney fan, and Mr. Library and I had an interesting experience on the teacups, so it would be really funny to get. The dogs are adorable, though! What a personal topper!

my mom bought me our cake topper as an engagement gift. i told her to be on the look out for the cake topper version of the willow tree ‘promise’. i collect those figurines and i think the neutral colors are beautiful (so beautiful that they are going to be my major wedding colors!).

Fun progression. Was almost surprised to not see this: http://www.redheadedninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/252.jpg . But I think you made the right choice.

We are using a Lladro topper too! Mr. CurlyQ was stationed in Spain (where Llardo is made) for a few years while in the Navy so they hold a special place in his heart. ;)

The cake topper you chose is too cute!! When I first saw the Lladro ones you posted I was like woah…thats gonna be big and expensive (my mom collects them too!), but the doggie one is perfect!!

My fiance really wants a cake topper. His mom collects lladro, so I thought it would be cute to incorporate one as our cake topper. I didn’t actually think of it, until I saw it done in a magazine.

My mom found the last lladro you on here super cheap on ebay and bought it for our engagement gift, only to find out it was huge!!! I assumed since it was in a magazine on a cake, it must be doable, but its actually really heavy. We are considering just having it placed next to our cake, but my fiance really want a topper on the actual cake. I wish it weren’t so big, their outfits kind of match ours, since my fiance will wear a navy blazer and khakis.

I love your idea, I’ll have to check out that collection!

Haha, Precious Moments also reminds me of my First Communion. I really love that one though! I do like the one you picked too. The eyes closed is sweet.

Those are so cute! I think that we’re either going super non-trad on the cake-topper front, or just nixing it all together. I’m currently trying to figure out if we have spirit animals to make some that are appropriate. :p lol

When we were at Disneyland last week I saw the Micky/Minnie Star Wars figures which I thought would be super cute. Although I know if I mention it to the mister, he’ll tell me Luke and Leia were sibling, so it would be wrong. Stupid stickler for accuracy…

@Newport Nuptials: omg I love that lladro!! Yes, it is very tall, and a word to the wise - a friend of mine used it as her cake topper and it fell off during the salad course of their dinner and the grooms head fell off (can’t make that up :)!! So just be careful! Maybe if there is a hole in the bottom you could use a dowel to stabilize it?! OR you could put it on the table beside the cake. Either way it’s BEAUTIFUL, and I’m totally jealous of you ;)

@mrjoy1028: hahaha that’s awesome!! even though we’re getting married at Penn State, we’re keeping our PSU touches subtle. Some of our family members thought we were going full force - like that navy blue and white were going to be our colors! That would have definitely been fun, too :)
