We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Forget Me Not

December 11th, 2009 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Forgetm forgetm

(Forget-me-nots, from here)

I fell in love with these wildflowers when I was wandering through a Botanical Garden in Madison, WI. I saw them out of the corner of my eye in a section of the garden filled with little tiny flowers, and I audibly gasped. They are such wonderfully colorful, delicate flowers with an equally fantastic name. And they have our color scheme built in - blue and yellow! I really wanted to incorporate these flowers into our wedding, but alas, as wildflowers, it can be difficult to predict exactly when they will be flowering and it’s too risky to base our whole flower scheme around them (even though I was completely willing to; I love them that much).

They are also quite small, so we would need a whole lot of them. I’m still holding out hope that at the last minute we’ll be able to get some and incorporate the flowers somewhere, as well as take advantage of their clever name. :)

For those of us with blue color schemes, it seems there aren’t too many true blue flowers in nature. Once we had put the Forget-Me-Nots on the back burner, I started looking into other blue flowers. Some of the flowers I’ve found are:

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers 3335194 3335194

(blue irises)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Lightb light+b

(light blue hydrangea)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Darkbl dark+bl

(dark blue hydrangea)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Delphin delphin

(blue delphinium/larkspur)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Bluemu blue+mu

(blue muscari)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Bluehy blue+hy

(blue hyacinth)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Cornflo cornflo

(cornflower, also known as blue Bachelor’s Button)

Forget Me Not : wedding flowers Blueni03 blue+ni03

(blue Nigella, also called Love-In-A-Mist)

There are so many beautiful blue flowers! Most blue flowers, though, have a tendency towards purple, so you’ll have to be careful about ordering them, or be very specific with your florist that you want blue and not bluish-purple flowers. These are all so pretty, I wish I could use them all in my bouquet… too bad there are no blue peonies!

These were just a sampling of what I found (and could identify) in searching for blue flowers - do you have any other favorite blue flowers? Am I missing any obvious ones that would be good to use in a bouquet or decorations? What other flowers are you using with your blue ones?

These are my favorite too! :) Our venue had them blooming on the grounds during our wedding in May (we were married at the University of Michigan, whose colors are maize and blue)

I have had luck planting these in a pot indoors out of season; you can get packets of seeds and see if you can grow them yourself!

I’m getting married at the botanical gardens in Madison, WI! I’m so glad you found some blue-flower inspiration there. It’s one of my favorite places in Madison.

from an old tale, forget me nots got their name…

a prince and a princess were walking along a river picking blue flowers, when suddenly the river swept the prince away and he tossed the princess the flowers saying “forget me not!”

@Mrs. Taffy: Oh! I will definitely try planting them in a pot myself, great idea!
@denverbirdlet: It was my first and only time in Madison (I loved it there though!) and the botanical gardens were my favorite. That’s awesome you’re getting married there, it will be beautiful!
@PennyRoulette: ha! I didn’t know the tale - thanks for sharing!

We are getting married next July in Alaska, and the forget me not is their state flower. So excited to use them in my decorations at our receptions back home!

My colors are blue and yellow but we’re not using any blue flowers, just going to stick with yellow and white…The ones you found are all super-pretty but like you said, they tend to veer towards the purple side of things, which I don’t want!

@Miss Trail Mix: Ha, I hope my florist got the drift when I mentioned like 10 times “It’s really important to me that the flowers be blue, not bluish purple. Blue.” I probably sounded crazy/bridezilla :( But I always pictured blue in our flowers!

I love those flower colors! Have you seen cobalt blue sweet peas? I’m having some of those in my bridal bouquet.

I love the forget-me-nots but I think the blue hyacinths are my favorite. They smell fantastic too!

When we were thinking of a blue color scheme, we were actually planning of doing flowers in a complimentary color instead of blue… we were focusing on white and yellow. I gave up on the blue flower search; I had no idea there were so many!

Wow, I’ve never seen hydrangeas of that deep blue color before! Beautiful.

Those blue flowers are awesome. When we were considering blue as a color, I was afraid that they would end up being too purple, not blue.
