Mrs. Cola's Picture
Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

On day three of this project we did a LOT of sanding, puttying and painting. The first step after everything was glued was to sand the edges to remove some of the black singed wood that is a product of the laser cutter. Paint and putty won’t stick as well to the singed parts.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36901 I then started puttying. Below are our supplies, putty, the wood, and a scraper (which I didn’t end up using, as my finger worked best).

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36803 Look how pretty and pink the putty was! When it was dry it turned white, but it made me happy to put it on in the bubblegum pink color.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36804 I puttied down the sides of the center support boxes, covering all the cracks where the pieces of wood met with a thick layer.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36805 I also had to putty all the peg holes in the shelves, as well as the seams and the edges.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36902 Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36903 It almost looked like sloppy pink frosting on the edges!

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36904 After the putty dried and was sanded down flush with the wood, I could finally start painting. This is what we used, and it covered very well with only three coats.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36905 Waiting for paint to dry in the parking lot at Mr. Cola’s office… very exciting!

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36906 Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 370 We used A LOT of paint!

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 37001 A close up of one of the fully painted center support boxes (this center support suffered the only mishap of the project. Two of the ’L’ notches are kind of messed up. It was my fault, as I wasn’t careful enough when pulling the shelf off of it. Since everything is cut to fit with laser precision, if you don’t pull straight up…  CRACK! But it’s going to be hidden, and structurally doesn’t matter very much, so we decided not to redo it.):

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 37002 While I was killing my back by bending over and painting for hours, Mr. Cola was finishing up the bottom support box inside.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 36907 The bottom support box and the bottom shelf had to dry overnight, so it wasn’t until day 4 that we got to putty and paint them.

Our (Literally!) Biggest Project, Part 2: A 6 Foot Tall Tower Of Cupcake Goodness! : wedding cake decor diy reception Img 371 Up next, we assemble the finished cupcake stand, and I’ll share the cost breakdown and more detailed specs. I know you can’t wait to see what this monster looks like all put together!

Did you, or do you plan to do any woodworking or painting with your DIY wedding projects?

Oh! Oh! I wanted the FI to make a stainless steel cake stand because I really love the look of stainless steel. And I want a BIG square ss cake stand which is very $$$. Until he remind me that our welder does not work with stainless steel. Bummer. I’ll have to think of something else.
I’m trying to think of a way to have him prefab our photobooth in such a way that it can be assembled on site. He’s pretty handy and we have a garage shop that’s pretty equipped and we’re both architects so we should be able to do it. =)

Love this idea! I’ve been looking for a tutorial on how to make my own so it’s super helpful to see the whole process you’ve gone through. Great work!

I made a tiny tree…and that itself tired me out! You should give yourselves a huge pat on the back.

This project makes me sad that my fiance no longer works at a firm with a laser printer. …But seriously, this is an awesome project. I can’t wait to see the final product!

@ Mouse - No idea what we’ll do with it after the wedding! So far I’ve gotten suggestions to sell it, rent it out to brides in my area, turn it into a kitty jungle gym, and make it a holder for my 350+ shoe collection…..
