About Mrs. Parfait

Our Manly Wedding Website

December 11th, 2009 @ 1:36 pm by Mrs. Parfait

When we decided on a wedding website, we didn’t give it much thought. In fact, my MOH and I first realized we needed a website when she was helping me with the Save the Dates! There was a blank space on the magnets for a URL, and in a rush to fill it, we did a quick Google search for wedding website hosts. BAD idea. We were completely overwhelmed! There were so many options, and at first glance, everything was way too feminine to force upon Mr. Parfait and the more masculine half of the guest list.

So, we went with what I knew: Blogs! MOH and I created a new WordPress blog that would be disguised as a wedding website. It was free, fast, and super simple! Did I mention free? Here’s what we did:

1. Create a new blog, and look for a template that emphasizes separate pages. Anything with large tabs works nicely. Keep in mind that you can usually customize the colors and banners.

2. Click to activate the most tab-poppin’ template, and choose titles for your pages. The first page, titled “Home” on mine, is where you would normally blog. I put a short “Welcome” message there and will not be adding any other entries to the page.

(Isn’t it so manly? I figured my personal blog and Weddingbee were girlicious enough that I could beef up our wedding website. Remember the show about starting a band called Girlicious? I kept wanting to say, “Being mean isn’t girly!” to all of the contestants. Okay, I’ve severely abused these parentheses. Back to the steps!)

3. As in a regular wedding website, input helpful info and cute pictures on each page.

Et voila! It’s simple. It’s easy to navigate. It’s got stuff in it. That covered all our needs. :)

Was your wedsite a long and involved process, or did you whip it up in a hurry?

Wow, that looks great! (and manly). I wish I were more web-literate to create something like this!

Great idea! our original wedding website was built on Wordpress.com and then Wordpress.org, but I really needed a robust online RSVP system that I wasn’t talented enough to build (and a comment form just wasn’t cutting it..), so we went with the free ones at WeddingWire.com

Hello,

I am a calligrapher out of RI and am looking to branch out a little. I know vendors are probably not allowed to post on here, but I could not find a way to contact you directly. I wanted to know if you needed calligraphy services (envelopes, place cards, just married sign, etc) for your wedding? I could offer at a good discount to you in lieu of web advertising.

Thanks!

nice. i think mrs. lovebug did the same for her website. since we’re not having a super long engagement, i’m not worried about getting a website up.

Good idea! We went through a wedding website… site and picked a pretty neutral design, but if I’d *thought* of something like this we’d have done it!

We actually did the same thing and used Wordpress.

SO much better, and we were able to set it up how we wanted, instead of like most other wedding websites:

We also used mywedding.com. I actually did a wordpress one too. Wordpress looks nicer but was a lot more work. I opted for easier - my main goal was disseminating information.

How did you do the CMS edits? I have a Wordpress web site right now but it still has the icon for the RSS feed, etc. I’d like to be able to cut that out..

We made the quick decision to buy a domain name and use our hosting company to host a Wordpress blog repurposed as a content management system. What took a LONG, LONG time was actually finding a template that had the right colors or ones that were close enough, wasn’t too girly, too techie, too bachelor, etc. Had I seen the one you picked, I may have even chosen it :) Nice job!
