Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Something(s) Old

December 11th, 2009 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

While wandering the aisles of Target (er, the picture frame aisle, more precisely, where I was looking for a 16×20″ poster frame for our seating chart and found one for $5.99, score!), I started thinking about what we might do for our table numbers. Should I pick up smaller, matching frames for those, too, I wondered?

The answer was, of course not! “Matching” is just so passé these days. ;) Instead, one idea led to another and I started to get the idea in my mind that older—or at least distressed—wood would make great frames for old photos. Old wedding photos. Old wedding photos of people who are related to us, more specifically.

(Okay, so maybe these people aren’t related to us. But I swear I’ve seen family photos like this!)

At first I thought this would be something of a pipe dream—our families are kind of small (relatively) and not excellent documentarians… would we even have enough old wedding pictures? I know I’ve seen my grandparents’ wedding photos, my maternal great grandparents’ wedding portrait, a little 5×7 from my parents’ Vegas wedding, and I have digital copies of all of my mom and step-dad’s wedding this past summer. Mr. Spaniel’s mom has some wedding pictures from other relatives, and my dad has pictures from some of my cousins’ weddings in the last twenty or so years—maybe not so old, but still important. Are there enough to get a different photo for every table? It remains to be seen, but since I still plan to number the tables rather than name them, I don’t see it being a problem to have some repeats. And if we really come up short, we can always display them together at the entrance near the guestbook, and come up with something else for the table numbers.

So with that, we’ve finally found our “something old”! I don’t know why I had such a hard time thinking of this!

What was your “something old”?

I’ve got a super soft place in my heart for old family photos. (They’re what we used on our reception tables!) I think it’s a great way to tie in the legacy that you and Mr. S will be carrying on with your own wedding. Two paws up! ;o)

I’m actually donig this exat same thing! (for the most part…)

Our centerpieces will be a paper “lantern” with 4 sides (made from cardstock) one side with information about the bridal party - one side with the table number - one side with a thank you poem for our guests - and my favorite side - family wedding pics!

i’m HUGE into my genealogy and have TONS of wedding pics from my family, dating back generations. The hard part will be getting mr. junebride’s family as they just don’t care about their genealogy. :(

I love it! I hope you have enough! My something old was a rhinestone cuff that was my grandmother’s and my mother also wore it to my sister’s wedding. :0)

this is a lovely idea–can’t wait to see how it works out (whether as table numbers or a standalone display)!

Love it! If you do not have enough for table numbers, definitely use them on your guest table! We’re surrounding our cake with old family wedding pictures :)

What a great idea. I know I wouldn’t have enough pics for that, but hopefully you do cause I think it’ll look fantastic!

I had intended to bring along the bonnet from my baptism, but completely forgot. During a pre-ceremony photo session, one of the groom’s aunts handed me the bonnet from HIS baptism, and asked if I could maybe carry it or something. Perfect! I tied it around the handle of the bouquet; I’m sure it just looked like some random lacy fabric that the florist had used, but I knew what it was–and the aunt cried, so extra points for me.

what about wedding pictures of members of your wedding party? you can tint them sepia or black and white if you want more of a consistent, vintage look.

@fromcharleston: I really like that idea! We have two married attendants (one on each side), so I’ll ask to borrow their pics. Not sure if I’ll do a vintage treatment on them, though… it might be nice to keep them true to their time. :)
