Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Homegrown

Lavender is the herb of choice to inspire a natural (or nature-themed) wedding—just ask Miss Trail Mix or Mrs. Bear Cub. It’s clear why, what with the beautiful scent and the pretty purple tips that add visual interest and a country-chic feel. But there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of love for my favorite herb, the plain green rosemary, in weddings these days.

There’s a big rosemary bush in the backyard of the house where I grew up, and every time I smell it, it feels like home. Rosemary also symbolizes loyalty and remembrance, and what better time for such sentiments than a wedding?

DIY favor! I like! (source)

When I thought of DIY-ing our flowers, the thought occurred to me to add some rosemary to my bouquet as a way to honor those loved ones who couldn’t be with us at our wedding, as well as to provide the familiar comfort of the smell of my old backyard as I walk down the aisle. And it doesn’t hurt that the texture it adds to a floral arrangement can be pretty lovely, too!

What do you think—do I smell a new theme here? I just found this herbal inspiration board and am drooling (and imagining home-baked rosemary sourdough bread) as I type this!

Did you find inspiration in unexpected places? Like, say, your childhood backyard, maybe? :)

I LOVE rosemary. At my cousin’s wedding, they handed out sprigs of it tied with a ribbon tucked inside the program, in remembrance of the bride’s mother.

We used rosemary in the Dude’s bout and tucked into a ribbon on our napkins.

We are thinking of having a wreath on the entrance to our venue made of rosemary and lavender. I’ve heard that rosemary used to have strong connections to weddings, probably based on the meanings associated with it, so I think it’s cool to weave it into the day somehow!

i like the idea of using herbs in bouts but i think i might get a headache if i had to smell it all day long so close to my face.

I harvested 100s of sprigs of lavender from our yard to use at our wedding. We put them at each place setting, scattered them throughout the bathrooms (like potpourri) and had vases of lavender throughout the wedding site during the weekend.

I was so happy to have herbs that I raised at our home for the wedding. I think it’s a really nice touch :)

Yum! I love rosemary. We DIY’ed the floral arrangements for the church, out of red carnations from the grocery store, and I added lots of rosemary from my parents’ backyard bush around the edges of each bouquet. I would have put it in the personal flowers (bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres) except that we did silk flowers for those.

… if I follow this model, I’ll end up with bulbs of garlic in my bouquet. We eat in galic, bathe in galic, live in garlic in my family!

I loooooove that white rose bouquet with the rosemary. It adds such a cool texture to a soft looking flower.

Miss Spaniel, I incorporated rosemary into my wedding. It was tucked into the napkin with a little label telling our guests that it was a gift to them-a traditional symbol of good luck in Croatia and a symbol of remembrance and friendship in England- countries of my husband and my ancestry. It was a lovely accent and looked great in our wedding photos!

I love the idea of herbs in the mix. And the symbolism is great.

Oh, and I had watermelon, rosemary lemonade once and it was one of the best things I’ve ever had to drink. Might be another way to incorporate it.
