Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

In Defense of Trends

December 13th, 2009 @ 12:55 pm by Ms Potato Chips

Trends get a bad rap. Trendy is the red-headed* sulky teenage sister of Classic, as in,

I don’t like trends. I prefer a more classic look.

And I like Classic. I do. Classic is the lovely, shiny-haired big sis, the one with the good job, the Burberry trench, and the Hermes silk scarf collection. Trendy is temperamental, with her headbands and colored tights and vampire books. She watches too much Jersey Shore.

Hive, as I sit here typing, wearing leggings, (fake)Uggs, and a big scarf around my neck, I hereby go on record in defense of Trendy.

Tiffany blue and brown? I don’t hate it! Apple green and pink? I’m doin’ it! Cupcake tiers, candy buffets, photo booths, birdcage veils, colored shoes, rustic barn receptions, mismatched bridesmaid dresses, pick-up skirts, hair flowers, peacock feathers, damask patterns, bird themes… these are the signs of the times, my friends. These are the Zeitgeists (one of my favorite words ever) and I think that’s just grand.

Look, I KNOW in 5-10 years I will look at photos of myself from 2009 and say WHY DID I WEAR LEGGINGS FOR AN ENTIRE SEASON?? It’s inevitable. And it will likely happen with our wedding, too! But as I go through my mom’s 1976 wedding album and chuckle at her non-matching pea-green bridesmaid dresses and my dad’s too-short tie and too-long sideburns, I smile, because it was and is absolutely perfect. What goes around will come around, no doubt about it.

Trends come and go, recycle and renew and re-inspire. They reach back and push forward and double in on themselves. They’re the punctum that pierces your spirit and defines a season, a year, a decade, a small colorful speck of your life.

I like them. How about you? What wedding trends do you fancy?

*oh you know I love red-heads; I’m even marrying one.

I like them both, and even people who are aiming for classic will probably have a dated look in 10 years. *Everything* comes and goes around. :)

I’m going for a more classic look, but there are a few trends I *must* have:

colored shoes (probably yellow or blue)
birdcage veil
the guys are wearing vans & chucks.

Most of all, my favorite trend is vintage. Which isn’t that almost an oxymoron?

I like them too! As long as our wedding is a reflection of what we liked/made us happy at the time, I’ll be happy. Like Miss Spaniel said, everything comes and goes around.

After looking at that list, we’re doing a lot of ‘trendy’ things: colored shoes, mismatched bridesmaid dresses, a pickup skirt, a fauxtobooth, and damask elements. Oh well! :)

I guess we’re not following any trends. We’re kind of planning ours based on what we like, hence, no bridesmaids, no suits, no reception, we’re kind of making our wedding our own. I love that trends come and go, then always come back around. They kind of recycle themselves like skinny jeans - I was wearing those 20 years ago in 8th grade and because of it, I’ll never wear them again!

I love mismatched bridesmaid dresses, pickup skirts, damask! And most of the other things. But, really, what’s timeless, anyway? You don’t know until afterward!

I’m probably doing a lot more trendy things than I realize.
I’m doing the colored shoes, but because I feel like being non-traditional.
I’m doing mis-matched bridesmaid dresses, but because my three girls live in three different states.
I think trendy or not, my wedding (and those I’ve seen on various boards) are more an expression of the Bride & Groom.

Ha - at first I didn’t see the star after red-headed and I was gonna be all “Whoa there P Chips. We gotta talk.” Then I remembered we both love our red-headed Misters :) I’d like to say we’re going for classic enough that future youngsters won’t use our wedding as a mockery of our era, but I’ll admit I’ve got quite a few trends thrown in the mix…

I love the trendy touches in my wedding! And, while I cracked up at my parents hippie wedding pics all through high school, I get all sappy looking at them now. My kids will undoubtedly do the same with ours!

i don’t worry about my wedding pictures being dated. i think that’s the charm of old pictures. i look back at pictures of me in elementary school and see the fluorescent colors and the jeans with the zippers and bows on the backs of the legs and smile because that was exactly how life was at that time.

and that’s what i want my pictures to reflect: life how it was at the time i married the love of my life. i’ll remember that i did cupcakes because i love cupcakes and it’s also has sentimental value for my guy and i. i want to do a photobooth because it would be fun. trends come and go but they also mark the time.

I love all the Bee bloggers, but you’re my favorite. I love the way you write and about what you write.

I’m rockin’ the mismatched bridesmaids dresses, the hair flower, and flower colors that one florist told me were inappropriate for the season in which I am getting married.

I don’t mind trends, as long as there isn’t an overload of them! I will probably be wearing colored shoes (I just hate white shoes), and we will have a candy buffet! IMO the candy buffet is one of the best trends in a long time!

I almost called you out like Guinea Pig. Why do redheads get such a bad rap? We’re a dying breed, you know. Trends–they may have made an appearance at my wedding but it was honestly just a reflection of what we liked. What we liked may or may not have been swayed by what others like right now. Doesn’t matter–it was perfect!!

Me: pickup skirt, non-matchy bridesmaid dresses, photobooth and the other popular trend a signature frame instead of a guestbook and a first look!

All you need to make your wedding a timeless classic is love and joy. Everything else goes out of style. We shouldn’t get so caught up in trendiness; ultimately, there’s nothing new under the sun, even in weddings. :)

i like when pictures look dated. its nice to be able to flip through a bunch of snapshots and know what era they came from.

I would definitely be doing some trendy things i guess even though i want a classic wedding..(huh?)
I just want it to be different and completely US!

I was with a friend at a bridal salon while she tried on some dresses and i mentioned i wanted mismatched BM dresses and navy blue pumps..they both froze and looked at me like i was insane..i loved it though, because i am tired of doing things how they like it..im just rebelling now:)

I am glad you put that disclaimer about the redheads at the bottom or else I would have been a lil offended. We get such a bad rap!
