Save the Date Inspirations

December 13th, 2009 @ 4:40 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Although I briefly contemplated buying pre-designed Save the Dates (STDs), I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I really wanted us to design them ourselves. Since we’re not designing our invitations, I wanted to try my hand at something, and STDs seemed like they would be the perfect, fun option. So, I got started (checking in with Mr. Guinea Pig every now and again, who would always say, “Looks fine.”).

It turns out, there is a reason I am not a graphic designer or artist. I’m a scientist and also a perfectionist, so not only did I struggle to design our STDs, but I nitpicked each draft of them, as well. My very first designs are completely different from where we ended up, so I thought I’d share the evolution of our STDs thus far.

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Typical typical

(example of a ’typical’ STD, from Magnet Street)

In the very beginning, we started with what I considered a fairly typical Save the Date idea.

At least, it looked like a lot of the STDs that I had seen over the years, mostly on other people’s fridges, since I haven’t been to very many weddings! I figured we’d get a postcard printed at Vistaprint during one of their sales (where 100 postcards are free) and this would also help us save on postage. Since Mr. Guinea Pig and I haven’t had an engagement photo session, I tried to find a photo that would work, and started bringing in elements I liked around the photo (flowers, flourishes, etc). This turned out to be a disaster, and looks like something a child drew in MS Paint (in my ever-so-slightly self-critical opinion).

But I decided to persevere, and start over. I kept seeing awesome STDs on wedding blogs that I desperately wanted to emulate:

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Osbp St osbp_st

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Osbp St01 osbp_st01

(Woodgrain Embossed Save the Dates found via Oh So Beautiful Paper)

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Smp Std smp_std

(Adorable Save the Date idea via Style Me Pretty)

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Oncewed oncewed

(one of my favorite STDs ever, via OnceWed - in fact, I loved their whole wedding from what I could see)

But knowing it could take me months to come up with a creative idea like these, I was starting to get desperate. Then came the fantastic suggestion from our officiant, and I finally had part of an idea nailed down: plantable paper! At first I liked the idea of something like this:

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Std Flo std_flo

(a wedding invitation, but you get the drift - from Daisy Days)

However Mr. Guinea Pig had other ideas - he had decided he didn’t want a picture of us on our STDs at all. Since it’s not very often he has a strong opinion about anything related to the wedding (see end of this post’s first paragraph, above), I went back to the drawing board. I still wanted something that would be fun and not too formal, and one day while Googling ’save-the-dates’, I came across these:

Save the Date Inspirations : wedding save the dates Std Cal std_cal

(calendar STDs found on Flickr, here)

I think these are great! And just as importantly, so does Mr. Guinea Pig! What I like most about them are the two shades of colored circles depicting the month, and how much the date stands out because it’s the only number (as opposed to putting an actual calendar on there). Now I had a design idea to work from, but I still found myself stuck - I didn’t want to copy these exactly, as I’m sure that’s not considerate/legal, but as someone who doesn’t design things I found it difficult to think of a way to incorporate the part we love into a new design! So that’s where things stood with our Save the Dates for almost a month, before I finally pinned Mr. Guinea Pig down and said, “This needs to be solved. NOW!”… these babies have to be designed, printed, stuffed, addressed and mailed within a month!

Did you design (/are you designing) any of your stationery for the wedding? Did you struggle to come up with a design that you liked? What is your favorite type of Save the Date? Any hints for a newbie?

I love the pencil ones and SERIOUSLY had already researched pencil prices… until my mom vetoed them. Right off the bat, as soon as I sent them to her. Denied. Sigh. I really like the dot calendar ones too!

I love the nutrition fact save the dates. It’s saved in my inspiration folder. :)

I’m doing all of our paper goods for the wedding, and it is both a blessing and a curse. I’m such a control freak, and an art kid, so I’d kick myself if I didn’t do them.

Hints for a newbie would be to collect things you like, but not too many, or else you’ll get way overwhelmed! Then make draft, draft, draft, after draft of what you like. Have everybody look at it. You don’t want to accidentally miss a piece of information, or have something wonky.

Also, you should check with the printers (unless you’re printing them yourself!) to see what their requirements are as far as your designs go. (Like, dpi, bleed, all that stuff. I’d do that early early on in the design process).

I’ll stop yapping now. :p

Aww the one you guys are inspired by is cute!! I’d say… you can still use the basic design and make it your own by changing the circles to squares (or some other shape) or the color. And as you play with the design, it’ll evolve into *your* design :)

And if you’re a nerd, ahem, I mean scientist, don’t be afraid to get nerdy on them! ;)

I did the 100 free posties from Vistaprint thing too :-P Comes out to about $10 for $3.50 loading down image and $6 s&h. BUT… they were NOT as thick (or nice) as I thought they’d be. But they were otherwise totally ok and will mail and most ppl said they arrived just fine.

Those are super cute. I wanted to do a calendar, too, but since I also wanted to do a picture, it got kind of cluttered. :)

Those are so cute! I absolutely love those nutritional info ones - they’re too cute. I have a feeling I’m going to be majorly stressed when it comes time to actually design ours!

@fiftyfootbride: Ha, I think my problem was I collected SO many inspiration photos, and they were all completely different! Thanks for your advice!
@alvina: I tried to convince Mr. Guinea Pig something sciencey/nerdy would be cute, but to no avail
@Miss Spaniel: Shortly after I wrote this post, we came to an impasse and scrapped the whole calendar idea too. Sigh.

I really love the pencil one! I’m planning to use my new obsession, the Cricut, to make my STDs. I have to put the investment to good use!

I’m hoping mine will come out as good as Miss Dachshund’s!

I did save the date luggage tags. I took plastic luggage tags and made my own inserts. I also didn’t like the plastic strap that came with it (even though I included it if people wanted it) and I attached cute polka dotted ribbons. I used Avery pre-cut business cards (get the “clean edge” and they fit GREAT into the tags and I used their template and didn’t have to worry about getting the text to match up perfectly. I mounted them on card stock just so they would go through the mail easier. Everyone seemed to like them.
