Should I Knit a Wedding Dress?

December 14th, 2009 @ 12:34 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Should I Knit a Wedding Dress? : wedding wedding dress Knitwed knitwed

(Knit wedding dress! Pattern here)

OK, I’m not that ambitious. But I am going to talk about knitting! And major props to anyone who knits their wedding dress - is there anyone out there?!

So, here’s a little story: when I asked my sister and friends to be a part of our wedding day festivities, 3 of the 5 were in very serious, long term relationships, and a fourth was starting a new relationship. Fast forward to today, and all of them are single. When Mr. Guinea Pig asked his guys to be a part of the big day, 3 out of the 5 were already married. Now, two of those couples are pregnant! I guess we have opposite curses on our friends (sorry ladies)!

What do friends’ babies mean for me? KNITTING! I love to knit, and I am so excited to knit super cute soft stuff for the two babies coming into our circle. I’ve started with a blanket for the couple due first, and I found this great double-knit pattern that Lou Hoover (Pres. Hoover’s wife) used to make for baby gifts:

(Recreation of Lou Hoover’s blanket, pattern from knitty.com)

My version will be this grass green with a natural cream colored border, because their nursery is already green, and I love this color combo:

(both are a slightly-less than worsted weight superwash wool)

I bought that yarn yesterday, and while I was browsing through the yarn selection I saw a blue that would match our wedding colors perfectly! Now I’m thinking, ‘hmm…. what can I knit for the wedding?!’ Possibly, a garter?

(knit garter, pattern again from knitty)

Perhaps a lace veil?

(pattern from here)

Or maybe a lovely retro lace shrug?

Should I Knit a Wedding Dress? : wedding wedding dress Knitlac knitlac

(original pattern from 1953, which kinda makes me love it even more)

I also like the idea of knitting flowers:

(knit calla lilies, pattern here)

I think I have my hands full folding paper flowers, though. Maybe I’ll knit a shawl/bolero in case it’s a chilly May night?

(Love that blue ribbon! Pattern here)

What would you knit for a wedding? Does anyone have any other ideas or favorite patterns? Maybe I could use knitting for some of the gifts we’ll be giving people in the wedding?

I started knitting purses for my bridesmaids, but I never finished the project. Someone will eventually get those as birthday or Christmas presents.

This bride’s dress was knit from wool from her own flock. http://craftivism.com/blog.html/2009/08/another-knitted-wedding-and-newsworthy-sheep/

I knit that last shrug to wear to my wedding, but it wasn’t flattering on my larger shoulders :( My best friend is knitting our chuppah cover for us! I was going to knit my veil, but I chickened out.

You could knit a headband/hair flower, possibly. I like all of your ideas!

I love the shrug from 1953! If your wedding is retro themed I totally vote for that. If I could knit, I would want to make that for my own wedding. Granted, it probably won’t be chilly in July….

Funny enough, my dad is crazy about knitting! He loves it, and I am sure he would try to make whatever I asked for the wedding. What a cool idea for the flowers! I hadn’t thought of that one! And I agree, the blue ribbon in the last picture is amazing.

I have grand intentions of knitting socks for the wedding party and maybe a shawl for me. I also plan to wear handknit socks myself. I may do a garter and some other things if I have time.

I actually banned myself from knitting for the wedding :-( IF I would let myself break that rule, I would totally do a big bouquet of felted Noni flowers for myself (tulips, poppies, roses, etc). I’ve thought about knitting a garter too… But alas- all my knitting energy is going into a wedding blanket for FBIL and baby stuff for FSIL.

@fiftyfootbride: Don’t be scared! The basic stuff is quick to master!
@Miss Spaniel: Whoa! Amazing
@Gilneas: Good to know, I have pretty broad shoulders too…
@Mrs. Mouse: Oh, good idea!
@beth: Actually, I will knit anything but socks. For some reason, knitting socks terrifies me.
@Miss Pretzel: All my knitting energy lately has been taken up with baby stuff for friends too! But I’m determined to knit something for the wedding!

The knitted lace garter is on my DIY list for my daughter. I am knitting it in a beaded yarn for extra sparkle

http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=TT-003

I was going to knit a chuppah, using http://www.interweavestore.com/Knitting/Patterns/Lace-Chuppah.html
but the florist gave my daughter another option she just loves (thank goodness! because the chuppah is a large project).

I have already bought the yarn and pattern for a bolero from Ravelry (Briar Rose bolero)

I’m a knitter, too!!! :) I’m currently working on a baby blanket for my sister (no mind that the baby is now 6 months old…I’m a tad behind).

I love that Lou Hoover pattern — let me know how it knits up!

This has inspired me to get back into knitting. DH won’t let me buy anymore yarn for awhile (not that I blame him - I’ve hit every Black Friday/day after Christmas sale since I started knitting so my stash is intense, but I’ve never paid full price for yarn).

I’m wishing I would have done my garter or bracelets for my ladies. Shoulda Woulda Coulda!

I’m contemplating starting a baby blanket soon. My cousin’s baby is due in June. My most recent blanket was a bunch of different squares sewn together. I thought it would be quicker, but I was WRONG.

Thanks for the inspiration!

I love knitting and have knit baby blankets for so many of the babies in my life. I’m sure yours will come out really cute.

I wanted to knit a lace umbrella for my wedding, but got realistic and understood that I just didn’t have that kind of time. I did have a knitted shawl/scarf thingy I made, but didn’t like how it looked with my dress after the final fitting. My sister knitted my garter and I’ve seen projects on Ravelry.com for knitted bridal slippers.

I’m more of a crocheter, and might have gone a little over board on the crochet details. I crocheted a lace design for my garter to match my dress. I am using a similar pattern for the edge of my veil. I crocheted lace edgings for three handkerchiefs that will go to my mom, FMIL, and aunt. Finally, I’m currently working on a shawl that will be used as table decoration for the guest book table.

Once you start with these details, it may be hard to stop.

tough choice–and kudos to you for having the talent/skills to do something! i vote for the shrug (b/c some of them can get pretty expensive) or the garter (because it’s cute and a smaller project). let us know what you decide!

What a lovely shrug! The little ribbon detail is so charming! I helped my great aunt crochet my ring pillow… not quite knitting, but close. :o)
