Pre-Wedding Skincare

December 15th, 2009 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

A lot of brides obsess about their skin leading up to their weddings, and I’m sure I’ll be no exception. But my current concern isn’t for my face—it’s for my hands! I have a serious dry skin problem, and henna stains best on well-hydrated hands.

I currently use Desert Essence coconut lotionPre-Wedding Skincare : wedding beauty , and it’s remarkably effective—when I remember to use it. It’s non-petroleum based, so it’s safe to use after the henna is applied, and the ingredients are organic, so I feel pretty good about it. It also smells like total yuminess.

But in the days leading up to the mehndi, I’d like to go with a slightly more intensive hydrating treatment. Instead of my coconut lotion (which I’m going to try to get into a better habit of using daily!), I will be switching to extra virgin coconut oil on my hands, arms and feet (you can buy jars of it at Whole Foods or on Amazon.com).

It’s solid at room temperature, but it softens starting at 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Conveniently enough, human skin is much warmer: I usually just grab a lump of solid oil and rub it into my skin, where it melts and hydrates quickly and effectively. I think that once-daily application of coconut oil (generally before bed, when skin loses most of its moisture) ought to go a long way towards healing my frequently dry, itchy skin. (The delicious smell never hurt anyone, either!) Extra virgin olive oil also makes a terrific moisturizer, but because it is liquid at room temperature, it tends to be messier.

What’s your healthy skin regimen? Are you changing anything up before your wedding?

I’ve used olive oil on my scalp in the winter before–it works really well! I bet coconut oil would work even better and smell better! Thanks for the tip!

That’s pretty interesting about the coconut oil. I may have to try — I’ve never been one to moisturize much but I’m starting to notice my neglect. Might have to try this one.

I’ve never heard of this but sounds like it is definitely worth a try for my very dry skin! I bet it smells yummy!

My dry itchy hands thank you! Also, maybe consider getting a humidifier for your room at night? That might help with moisture loss…

I wish I wouldn’t hate lotion and stuff so much. My skin is so dry, but whatever I try feels like a glove! My hands are so dry and cracked from being washed 203423048 times from being in paint, solvent, ink. etc.

I wish Clinique made their gel face moisturizer in a body form. I do love that stuff.

@Miss Guinea Pig: We’ve started using one because it helps with sinus issues… maybe it will help improve my skin too!

@Miss Scissors: The great thing about using coconut oil is that the weight feels almost like water, so it might help with the “glove” problem. ;) It’s much, much lighter than any petroleum-based moisturizer I’ve ever used.

@Mrs. Mouse: No problem! You’ll definitely want to make sure that you don’t let it drip further down your hair, though, or wash it out right away, or else you might end up with white chunks in your hair later. ;)

@Champagne Wishes: It might be gross, but it happens to me, too! My legs look like crocodile skin sometimes!

@Ms. Mojito: I hope you’ll love it! ;) You can cook with it, too! It’s seriously the multipurpose jar of awesome.

I might have to try this on my hands too - I have eczema and nothing is really helping. :( Can I ask how much it runs at whole foods?

@jduck84: I bought a brand that was being cleared out for $7 a jar, but I think they usually sell it for twice as much. Try Amazon, though… you can get them for a LOT cheaper!

@Miss Spaniel: If you go running, etc. after using it, does it get that AAACK SLIME feeling? I think that’s also one of my biggest scared-y cat things. I just end up feeling like a greased pig. :p

@Miss Scissors: A good question that I do not have the answer to! I’ve only ever used it before bed (it makes me shiny!) but it’s totally absorbed by the morning and I don’t feel slimy at all.

@Champagne Wishes: I’d say neither :) It’s happening to me, too, already.

This is actually a great hair mask, too. I do this once a month - cover my dry hair with coconut oil until it’s all covered, leave in for 30 minutes, and then wash out (just shampoo, no conditioner). Sometimes I need to shampoo twice to get it all out. To get the coconut oil to go on smoothly, I put a few tablespoons in a cup and place the cup in a bowl of hot water, and this melts the coconut oil so it’s more oily and less chunky.
