Mrs. Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!

Dawn of the Dead: Bridezilla Edition

December 16th, 2009 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Rainbow

One fine evening, I dragged Mr. Rainbow, against his will, to a bridal show. I was expecting Mr. Rainbow to loathe it, and I to love it. Needless to say, it didn’t work out quite as planned. Mr. Rainbow did, in fact, loathe it, but surprisingly, I did too. I really thought I would love all the bright weddingy frou frou-ness of it, but that was not the case.

I always thought that planning a wedding was kind of a like a not-so-secret society that, instead of a secret password or key card, you get a shiny new ring on your finger. You know, ohhh ahhh, exciting! Oh, how naive and void of WE TV’s “Bridezillas” I was back then. In the year we’ve been engaged, I have learned that while weddings are certainly exciting, the actual planning is not all sunshine and rainbows 24/7, oh no.

Anyway, back to the bridal show. After walking through to pits of hell, er… shiny French doors, I noticed what seemed like an endless sea of frantic, rabid looking women with their eyes popping out of their heads. Did I miss something? Did the swine flu vaccine have horrible zombie-like side effects, a la I Am Legend, Resident Evil, or any other zombie movie plot you can think of? Oh no… these women were… brace yourself… brides. The horror!

It was as if I could hear them chanting “Welcome to the club, Rainbow” as they gnawed on my ankle. Why my ankle? I’m not sure. You’d think they’d choose a meatier part of me.

After getting overly expensive products hawked at me for the better half of an hour and being ’bowed in the ribs fifteen times too many by said rabid brides, it was time to hightail it out of there. Did I find any of my vendors from this little soiree? Nope. Did I win any of the said prizes that they tempt you with? Nope. Did I gain any useful information from this shindig? Why yes, I did. I learned never ever ever to go to any event with the word “expo” in the title. Apparently “expo” is code for flesh eating zombies. And they will get you.

Have you been to a bridal show? What was your experience like?

This is what I’ve been so scared of!! I haven’t been to one, and now I REALLY don’t want to!

I feel like Wedding Expos / Bridal Shows are like going on a Cruise (no offense to anyone who enjoys Cruises.) I feel like I should try one at some point, but I’m pretty darn sure that I wouldn’t enjoy it.

Brides can be crazy. We can get so wrapped up in the idea of creating a perfect day that we get wrapped up in our image excessively. Way unhealthy, ladies (me included!) If you find yourself stressing out about whether you should wear chandelier earrings or pearl studs (and I mean literally, like, losing sleep over it…) just make a decision and don’t look back. I find that I feel best when I make a decision and simply stick to it. It’s the waffling that kills us!

The one I went to wasn’t bad at all. I was able to talk to the owner of a dress store I wanted to visit and we found our DJ. Although at the time I didn’t realize we found our DJ. :P

Emily - so true about losing sleep over things nobody else thinks about. My FI looked at me like I had three heads when I showed him the various colors of “white” tulle I got samples of for my veil.
But yes - expo shows are scary!

Yes, and I went alone so I had no one to hate it with. Absolutely miserable experience causing my first and one of very, very few wedding meltdowns.

*I especially liked the pits of hell part!

I’ve been to two different expos - one of them was PACKED but the energy was up, so no problems there.

The second was a bit smaller and boring - it was too long for the few vendors they had available - but I won something at this one!

All in all, my experience was pretty alright. No zombies here! Although I’m sure if I told my fiancé about that he’d probably want to come. :)

I went to one and the only redeeming part was that we stopped in the bar at the hotel it was at after and had cocktails! Otherwise it was scary to be honest and I have a young mom so they kept asking her when she was getting married and not me….yeah a mood killer for sure

Yup, went to one with a friend about 2 weeks after getting engaged, and as Miss French Fries said - apart from the free cake samples, it was horrible and I wanted to leave immediately after getting there.

Um this was hilarious. I had a good time at the bridal expo I went to, but it wasn’t very crowded when we left. As we were leaving the zombie-brides were coming in, and I can definitely see what you mean, haha

I went to one and had a v. similar experience. Yikes! But luckily I went with someone who had been through the whole thing before, and she tried to steer me clear of the craziness. I also ended up finding my venue there!

HAHHAHAHA Oh MY God. I went to one nearly 3 years ago now with a friend who was engaged, and I walked out nearly in a panic! It was all so overwhelming! And terrifying! And I wasn’t even engaged (or dating someone at the time!). I looked at her walking out the door and asked how she wasn’t hyperventilating!

They probably went after the ankle because it wasn’t fatty and they wanted to fit into their dresses :-)
I’m put off by the vendors - DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT! But, still going to one in January to do DJ interviews. The thought of wedding cake is the thing I’m excited about.

I went to one and started seeing all these girls I haven’t seen since high school and I just wanted to run away. I second Miss French Fries on the free cake samples :)
