I Like You

In July, I found this post by Mrs. Candy Corn. She wrote about her ceremony reading—excerpts from Sandol Stoddard Warburg’s I Like You. By the end of the post, I was trying not to start boo-hooing. I thought it was sweet, lovely, and fit Mr. S and me perfectly. I added the book to my laundry list of things to get.

I looked for the book everywhere. Nobody had heard of it, and I think they thought I was batnuts crazy, to be honest. Why would I want this little ol’ children’s book written in 1965? I’d end up blabbering on about how fabulous it was, how I couldn’t read through the excerpts I’d read without crying, and other crazy things. I was a woman in love.

I finally got tired of being crazy to the salespeople at the different Borders, so I stopped being lazy and ordered it from Amazon. All $6.95 of it. It ended up being some of the best $6.95 I’ve spent. The entire book is even more lovely. I’d love to have the entire thing read, with maybe a few things cut for time.

Now, without further ado, here’re my favorite parts of the book.

I Like You by Sandol Stoddard Warburg

I like you,
And I know why.

I like you because
When I tell you something special,
You know it’s special,
And you remember it
A long, long time.

You say,
Remember when you told me
Something special?

And both of us remember.

When I think something is important,
You think it’s important too.

We have good ideas.

When I say something funny,
You laugh.
I think I’m funny and
You think I’m funny too.

You know how to be silly.
That’s why I like you.
Boy are you ever silly.
I never met anybody sillier than me til I met you.

I like you because
You know when it’s time to stop being silly.

Maybe day after tomorrow.
Maybe never.

And I like you because
If we go away together,
And if we are in Grand Central Station,
And if I get lost,
Then you are the one that is yelling for me.

And I like you because
When I am feeling sad,
You don’t always cheer me up right away.
Sometimes it is better to be sad.
You can’t stand the others being so googly and gaggly every single minute.
You want to think about things.
It takes time.

I like you because if I am mad at you,
Then you are mad at me too.
It’s awful when the other person isn’t.
They are so nice and hoo-hoo and you could just about punch them in the nose.

If you find two four-leaf clovers,
You give me one.
If I find four,
I give you two.
If we only find three,
We keep on looking.
Sometimes we have good luck,
And sometimes we don’t.

I like you because
I don’t know why, but
Everything that happens
Is nicer with you.

I can’t remember when I didn’t like you.

It must have been lonesome then.

I like you because, because, because…
I forget why I like you,
But I do.
So many reasons.

On the Fourth of July,
I like you because
It’s the Fourth of July.
On the Fifth of July,
I like you too.

If you and I had some drums
And some horns and some horses,
If we had some hats and some
Flags and some fire engines,
We could be a HOLIDAY!
We could be a CELEBRATION!
We could be a WHOLE PARADE!
See what I mean?

Even if it was the nine hundred and ninety-ninth of July,
Even if it was August,
Even if it was way down at the bottom of November,
Even if it was no place particular in January,

I would go on choosing you,
And you would go on choosing me,
Over and over again.

That’s how it would happen every time.
I don’t know why.

I guess I don’t know why I like you, really.
Why do I like you?

I guess I just like you,

Because I like you.

*All Photos by Me!

We are having this read at our ceremony, and I have no idea how I will be able to hold back the waterworks during it. It’s so fitting, so simple, and so true.

I really do cry, even now, every time I read it.

Did you fall in love with a particular reading really early on in your wedding-planning process? Also, who else fell in love with this book the second they read it, either here, in person, or via Mrs. Candy Corn?

I gave this to my FI two years ago for Valentines. At the time we had only been dating for 3 months. I was ready to say “I love you” to but we hadn’t said it yet, so this book was perfect! It doesn’t say I love you once, but it conveys the meaning without having to. I loved it the first time I read it.

Wow… this book is absolutely perfect. It has a way of taking the words right out of your mouth, simplifying them, and then making the impact you were looking for. Thank-you for posting this, I somehow missed it the first time around!

    My favorite:
    And I like you because
    When I am feeling sad,
You don’t always cheer me up right away.
Sometimes it is better to be sad.

Love that book, I think I just might have to go buy it for the hubby right this second! Especially since we always say to each other (in our Borat voices, hahaha) “I like you.”

I gave my Sweetie this book as a gift at our rehearsal dinner and read it to him while people ate. We laughed and cried and he loved it. It was one of my favorite parts of our whole wedding.

We will also be having this at OUR wedding. My maid of honor is my 16 year old sister, and since the church wont allow secular readings, we decided to have her read it at the reception instead of giving a toast/ speech.

No shame in bawling at it- I read it out loud to the FI while I sobbed back over the summer when Candy Corn originally posted. :)

We used it (abridged) at our ceremony in September, and we get tonnes of comments on it. Good choice :-)

I too fell in love with this book after Mrs. Candy Corn posted it! I went to Barnes and Noble to order it – they didn’t have it but called me when it came in – sans shipping charges, Holla!

I gave the book to my guy along with a pair of orange cashmere socks! I just loved it so much!

I did find out that he didn’t even read it until we were on our honeymoon! Oh, well – you can’t plan everything!

I love this book. Got it for the future hubs for Valentine’s Day last year and we keep it on our coffee table. Are you going to read the whole thing at the ceremony, or just the parts you included here? We are going to include an excerpt in the program, but we’re having trouble deciding on our favorite parts. If I was having a smaller wedding, I’d seriously buy every guest a copy, that’s how happy this book makes me. And for the record, I cry when I read it too :)

I love this book! I’ve been looking for somethine else for Christmas (or maybe Valentine’s Day) & this will be perfect! We have another favorite kid’s book: Won’t You Be My Kissaroo-he read it too me & did all the animal kisses (the dog one was GROSS), so I got it for him for Valentine’s Day a few years ago.

I’m going to surprise FI with a short excerpt from “Guess How Much I Love You” as a reading because when he asks “how much do you love me” I usually answer….’all the way to the moon—and back’ :-)

I got this book as a gift this year from two teens that I volunteer with. It definitely made me tear up but I hadn’t quite put this book and our wedding together. Such a great reading, it’ll be perfect for you!

I read the same post by Mrs. Candy Corn and instantly wanted to find a copy of the book for both my sister’s wedding and my friend’s wedding. I work at a Borders part-time and had some difficulty finding it. It has gone out of print and back many times. I finally ordered it through Borders.com and waited FOREVER to finally get my copy. I shouldn’t have been so hasty. We now have no less than 6 copies on our shelf at work right now. Oh, well, now it is readily available for all to buy!

I found this book a few months back when I was searching for a book to stand in as pre-martial counseling. I bought it right away and it is currently hidden in the bag my dress is in so a) he won’t find it and b) I won’t forget to bring it to the wedding. We won’t read it at the ceremony, but it’s part of my gift to him. I’ll write a letter on the inside cover. “To my Goofus on the Roofus”. :)
