I’m Going to Moon My Honey

December 16th, 2009 @ 3:17 pm by Mrs. Pug

Hee hee. I’m so clever. This is another post about our honeymoon, although I do the above as well.

As I mentioned, we’re going to Bali for our honeymoon. A few days at a beach-y place (I’m thinking Jimbaran Bay), and the rest of the time in Ubud, which is in the central area and known for allowing visitors to get a sense of Balinese culture with museums, marketplace, etc.

This is our honeymoon. There is hardly any other excuse in one’s life to do some serious splurging for our trip. So while our other vacations are filled with third-choice locations, we wanted to do this honeymoon proper.

Is this ridiculous? It’s a lot of money. Oh the guilt. *Pause*. OK, I’m over it.

In Jimbaran Bay, we have been considering several options for lodging. For 3 to 4-star places (this is our honeymoon, after all), there actually isn’t a huge selection. In general, you can get so much more for your money in Bali than you would at other places—like, way more than my booger-sized NYC apartment, and you also get flowers in the tub!

Having said that, one place that totally busts the you-get-more-for-what-you-pay rule is The Four Seasons:

I would love to stay here, but alas, at about $600-700 per night without taxes and service charge, Mr. Pug started eyeing my engagement ring and muttering something about “pawn shop”.

Okay, moving on to second choice. Second choice is still good! We considered the Jamahal resort in Jimbaran Bay—a more reasonably priced option (but admittedly still a bit of a splurge). The Jamahal also has great reviews on TripAdvisor.

Then we looked at Jimbaran Puri Bali—which also has really good reviews on TripAdvisor.

While Jamahal was the least expensive option, there is a busy road separating the resort from the beach. While this didn’t seem to be a big issue with any of the reviewers and they have hotel staff to help you cross the road, we decided that since we are only staying for a few nights and want to make the most of it, that we would pay a little more and stay at the Jimbaran Puri Bali (so, there will be no playing real-life Frogger for us).

As for Ubud, there are a ton of places to stay and I spent much time looking at TripAdvisor. Our favorites included Villa Semana:

and Komaneka:

Komaneka has three properties, of which the Komaneka at Bisma (pictured above) is the newest. I mean, who can resist that infinity pool. And there is a restaurant with a balcony that has this view. I could just die. While one of the other Komaneka properties, Komaneka at Monkey Forest, is closest to the center of Ubud, we are willing to forego the short walking distance for this really beautiful property.

Are you staying in one place for your honeymoon or are you moving around? Do you have any tips for Bali?

We’re going to Bali in May of 2010 for the heck of it. We’re staying at the Intercontinental though.

I would really look into villas…we stayed at a villa and it was worth every penny with better service than a 4* hotel I would look into http://www.balivillas.com. I wrote a review on tripadvisor about the villa service and our whole honeymoon stay.

If you are a member of gilt group you might keep an eye on jetsetter the new travel section. They have some pretty amazing (seemingly) places and the prices seem pretty discounted. I haven’t booked anything but worth a look perhaps.

Beautiful! We’re going to a resort in Jamaica and pretty much hunkering down on the beach for a week. But, that’s followed in 6 months by a whirlwind trip to Australia and NZ where we’ll be going everywhere!

We are going to Bali for our honeymoon too! We are still figuring out exactly where in Bali though, and Lombok is sounding pretty enticing too (check out the Gili islands and kuta on Lombok)! So we are thinking about splitting our time between the two. It seems like you really can’t go wrong in either place. Oh, and we made the decision for the same reason as you: I want beaches, he wants culture. Talk about the best of both worlds!

I’ve been to Bali before - it’s awesome there! I stayed at the Kartika Plaza hotel and it was on of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at in my life!

I agree with the above comment on the Villas. I’ve been to Bali a few times now (living in Australia, it’s only a 5 hours flight!) and you get the best money value in a villa. I stayed in Seminyak, which is a beautiful classy area (go to La Luciolla if you have the chance for breakfast!) in a villa that only cost me $150 per night. This got us our own private blocked off yard with an in ground large pool, kitchen, lounge, dinning room, laundry room, cleaners, a free car to use, basically everything a house has!! It was amazing. So, you might want to research a bit more :)

We went in February and stayed at the Intercontinental at Jimbaran. For one of the nicest 5-star resorts in the area, it was surprisingly affordable- only $160/night from the Intercontinental website itself.

Here are a few of the highlights:
- super cheap spas
-Tanah lot
- Tampak Siring
- scuba diving & banana boating at Nusa Dua (we bargained the price for both activities down to $20/person, including lunch, transportation, pictures and video on a DVD)
- Bali Elephant Safari Park tour
- We had an excellent driver that we highly recommend for $35/day (about 9 hours of driving). PM me if you want more info.
- We really wanted to check out the Bali Treetop Park near Bedugul but it was raining the day that we had planned to go.

Have an awesome time - you’ll love it!

Ooh, I only know of it from a Korean drama—maybe your fiance has seen it. It’s called Prince’s First Love, and Song Yuri’s character gets a job in Bali! And there ends my knowledge of Bali. It looks beautiful, though. : )

I LOVE BALI! My fiance proposed to me in Jimbaran Bay (or close to Jimbaran Bay last month. He took me to a resort called Ayana Resort, which has a bar build into the rocks, where you have to take an inclinator down the cliff to go to it. It’s stunning! I would stay there for a few, blissful gorgeous post wedding nights before heading to Ubud.
But i agree with Seminyak. It’s quieter and not so far away from the everything!

So, I know I”m a little late on this, but I just saw your post and wanted to add my input. We also did Bali for our honeymoon and did a week in Ubud as part of it - which we loved.

I would say this, we really liked staying near town. We walked by the other properties such as the one you are looking at and they are kind of far out there - making going into a town kind of a trek. You may be fine with this, just thought I would share my opinion.

We stayed near the monkey forest and loved it! The place we stayed is called the Alam Jiwa and it is the gorgeous little family owed hotel with open air bathrooms and the most amazing free breakfast. Our deck overlooked the rice patties and we were just a 10 minute walk to the center of Ubud. if you check them out - you may find that they totally balance the price of the first part of your trip!

Also - in Ubud I highly recommend checking out the Elephant Caves and the Jazz Cafe one night! We also did a cooking class that was really fun and included a trip to the market in the morning.

If you are up for it, and enjoy hiking, we did the hike to the top of Mt. Agung, which was a once in alife time experience. It is not for out of shapers though be warned!

We had an amazing time and hope you do to!
