Product Review: Go Smile

December 16th, 2009 @ 2:22 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

We all want white teeth for our weddings, right? Well, since I’m signed up for god knows how many different discount websites (Gilt Groupe, HauteLook, Ideeli, etc.), I constantly get emails about discounted products, clothing and jewelry. Most of them are great, but sometimes they are still out of my price range.

However, recently HauteLook had a sale on the Go Smile teeth whitening kit (I think they’re doing it again this week). I got 2 of them (one for me, one for Mr. Fro Yo) for super cheap! Now, I’d never used this before, but I’d seen it at Sephora, and I usually love their products.

The box arrived and it looked like this:

Then I opened it up and saw all of these:

The kit directions said that you need to use each one of the little ampoules morning and night for 2 minutes over the course of 7 days. Not too bad at all. Surprisingly, the liquid did not taste too much like peroxide, which is a good thing because you can’t rinse out your mouth after use. And, using it for just 2 minutes a day was really easy. It was even kind of fun because you get to squeeze them to activate the liquid and they make a big pop sound. I also did not notice any teeth sensitivity while using them.

So, the results? I’ll break it out into good and bad.

The Good

  • No teeth sensitivity
  • Doesn’t taste that bad
  • 2 minutes twice a day is really easy
  • Fun to pop open

The Bad

  • I felt like my teeth had a film on them right after, and brushing or rinsing after use is not allowed. So I had to go to bed and to work with some liquid film on my teeth (it looked kind of foamy, like a rabid dog for the first couple of minutes… sexy!).
  • The results weren’t really dramatic. I did notice that my teeth were slightly whiter, but not significantly so.

So would I recommend the product? I don’t think so. I got this massively discounted, but if I paid full price, I would have been really disappointed.

What at home teeth whitening system would you recommend?

The one and only time I saw these were in a cruise ship spa. I tend to believe that if it’s on a cruise ship, it’s probably bogus. I’m glad you didn’t pay full price.

I tend to stick to the basic Crest Whitestrips. They work well for, me but I’m interested in hearing what others use!

I tried these before as a free sample from Sephora. I kind of agree with your review–the results weren’t dramatic. I think brushing with a high-speed electronic toothbrush and flossing regularly are the best ways to keep teeth white. Also good to brush or drink water immediately after drinking coffee/red wine/juice.

The Target brand of whitestrips are the best!!! They are made of wax, and really mold to your teeth. I always have trouble getting the Crest ones to stay in place. Plus, they are cheeper!

I agree with your review. My favorite are the Aquafresh White trays - those things have worked INCREDIBLY well for me twice now. Theyre great. I didnt have sensitivity with them TOO badly, but I dint get sensitvity with much of anything

I haven’t decided if I’m going to bother with teeth whitening… I tried it once a few years ago and I had TONS of PAINFUL sensitivity, and since my teeth aren’t that discolored (I don’t really have many tooth-discoloring habits!) it totally wasn’t worth it. If the impact was minimal, it wouldn’t be worth it, either.

I’m using the Crest white strips just because I had a decent coupon for them. I don’t think any at home whitener will be very dramatic though. But one easy thing that does make your teeth look whiter is bright lipstick!

Thanks for the review! I just picked up some Crest Whitestrips at Costco, to try them out - if they work well, I’ll probably use them again before the wedding. I drink SO MUCH tea, that it definitely stains my teeth.

I agree with the crest whitestrips. Prior to my wedding my dentist offered to do the Zoom whitening as a gift :). As a smoker (i know i know), avid wine fan, and Diet Coke junkie, my teeth definitely needed a little brightening. Zoom worked awesome for getting my teeth sparkly, but the pain was unbearable. I had to call in the next day to work because I couldn’t open my mouth as the cold air hurt my teeth.

I bought some from Hautelook a few months ago and am saving them for closer to my wedding. Sad to hear that the results weren’t dramatic. I figured a Sephora product would be good too. Oh well!

thanks for sharing this–i’m going to use some kind of teeth whitener before the wedding. i’ve used crest premium advanced (the newer kind that is stickier and doesn’t require as frequent wearings), and i guess i’ll stick with those!

Ooh, thanks for sharing this - I saw the recent sale (Gilt Groupe or Haute Look I think) and was wavering on whether to buy it. I might pass.

I dig the rembrandt 2 hour kit if I’m out of time for the whitestrips :)

My dentist (in the UK) sells fluoride gel that you can put on your teeth after whitening. I wonder if something like that would help with the tooth sensitivity after whitening?

They’re not “bogus” or anything like that, but you’ll get different teeth whitening results depending on what product you get (and generally, the products with the most dramatic results tend to be the most expensive). Whitening toothpaste and something like this will probably make your teeth 1 or 2 shades whiter if you use them consistently. I believe products such as Crest Whitestrips make your teeth up to 6 shades whiter. However, if you really want the most dramatic results, you have to fork out the $$ for BriteSmile or Zoom. They are pricey but they can make your teeth up to 14 shades whiter!

How do I know so much about this, you ask? I had a professor in college who helped start up BriteSmile! She loved to talk about it.

You know how toothpaste sometimes contains baking soda as a tooth-whitening, breath-freshening agent? Well, we have started making our own toothpaste out of baking soda. Here is the recipe:

Toothpaste for Two for a Week

3 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon coconut oil scrapings (or a few drops of boiled water)
3 drops of peppermint essence.

Mix together and keep in a covered container. Use a spoon to take out small quantities each time.

Works a charm!

I’m a fan of Rembrandt. They’re a bit more expensive than Crest but pack a bigger punch. :)

The Rembrant 2 hour white. It’s a little more expensive than white strips, but it’s got several treatments worth of gel in it. You use it for 10 minutes and leave it out for 5, 4 times in a row to get the 2 hours, as best as I can remember. I saw a really dramatic difference. I would use it once a day, for the 10 minutes, so that it made a difference over time, and I didn’t waste 2 hours walking around with the little mold things in my mouth. They were wonderful.
