Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Mr. Guinea Pig - if the title of a post contains the words Dress Shopping, this is a No-Go-Zone. Go to Jail. Do not collect $200.

I hate shopping (I also hate cheese… might as well get all the gasp-worthy secrets out at once). I get easily frustrated when things don’t fit and dislike sorting through racks of clothes I don’t like to find the one item that might be worth trying on, and in the end hate that I’m being incredibly picky. That being said, I was looking forward to wedding dress shopping because it seemed different, somehow. Maybe it’s because I went into it thinking you’re supposed to try on a bunch of dresses before you decide, so it wouldn’t be a big deal if I was my usual picky self!

However I somehow managed to create for myself the worst possible first dress shopping experience: I went to David’s Bridal (not in-and-of-itself a bad thing). The largest one in the nation, in fact. On a Saturday afternoon. During a $99 gown sale. Ohhhh dear. To say it was crowded would be an understatement (fortunately we got some space to ourselves in the alterations area!). It was a great learning experience in what I did not want in a wedding dress! Plus, the two BMs + honorary BM who went with me were amazingly supportive, and kept me sane and laughing.

I’ve heard this many times before, but I’m here to repeat it:

I went into this imagining a very specific kind of dress, and at the end of the months long dress journey, came out with something completely different! Below are (not flattering at all) pictures from the David’s Bridal trip to illustrate my journey - sadly I have no idea what the style names of these dresses are, sorry!
Here’s what I was certain I wanted:

Dress Shopping: In Which I Start with One Idea and End with Something Completely Different : wedding wedding dress Dress9b Dress9b

(as you can see from the look on my face, I was less than impressed)

Simple, simple, simple. Also, white. It turns out, I like some embellishment, and white = me looking like a mix between a ghost and a lobster. The saleswoman tried to convince me this dress was too simple to even try on, but I swore it was what I wanted. She was right. {sigh}

I decided to move on to dress # 2, which was something a) not stark white, and b) a lot like the dresses I already have in my closet (albeit those are not ivory, or long).

Dress Shopping: In Which I Start with One Idea and End with Something Completely Different : wedding wedding dress Dress7a Dress7a

(This is one of my most favorite necklines ever)

I thought that since almost all the dresses (and many shirts) I own already have this very same neckline, maybe I should branch out and do something a little different for my wedding. So I tried on this dress…

Dress Shopping: In Which I Start with One Idea and End with Something Completely Different : wedding wedding dress Dress4 Dress4

(How uncomfortable do I look?)

… which made me - a) feel a little like a medieval princess (actually, that was sort of fun), and - b) decide to nix the empire waistline. A series of other random dresses followed, including a dress BM Lauren picked out with pin-tucking that confirmed my dislike for feeling like a marshmallow, and then I tried on the game-changer:

Dress Shopping: In Which I Start with One Idea and End with Something Completely Different : wedding wedding dress Dress101 Dress101

(Why yes, that is all-over lace. The opposite of simple.)

What was this? A lace dress?! But I’m a tomboy scientist! I don’t like pretty, feminine things! No, I must resist! Alas, it was to no avail. The lovely-lace bug had bit me, and suddenly all I could think about were wedding dresses with lace!

Fortunately for my opinion of the whole wedding-dress-shopping-thing, we stopped there after 1 hour, 10 dresses, and multiple pin pricks from walking barefoot in the alterations area. We grabbed lunch, which infinitely helped my mood, and headed to our second dress appointment that day. The difference between the two stores could not have been more drastic! But as you’ve probably already guessed from my clear love of To Be Continueds, you’ll have to wait for the conclusion of this story. :)

Did you know exactly what kind of wedding dress you wanted? Did you actually get that dress?! What was your worst/best dress shopping experience?

That dress was a game-changer for me, too. :) I just wish it would have been two inches longer, and that the straps didn’t hurt me so much!!

After much searching, I had finally decided that I want the Maggie Sottero Allison Marie in the Antique Gold. I randomly found it during a store-closing sale for less that I had seen it used. That was an awesome day.

hah! exact same happened to me! I was completely set on simple with a fun twist, like an interesting back…I ended up with lace and pretty intricate. You look beautiful in each dress though, no matter how awk you felt :)

I thought I wanted lace, and ended up with the Maggie Sottero Fredricka which has no lace and is very simple. Oh my! =)

The lace does look really nice on you!! Looking forward to seeing what you ended up with. Oh, and I must admit, I did gasp when I read that you hate cheese!

Damn you lace, you got me too! I was specifically avoiding lace dresses in the beginning and that’s what I ended up with. And yeah, like Hammy, I was shocked about the cheese comment.

Like you, I thought I wanted something TOTALLY simple. I ended up with beading and lace. When I tried on dresses, the ones I thought I would like just didn’t work on me.

@Miss Spaniel: Yeah somehow none of the dresses at DB really fit me or were comfortable - I think I must be an awkward body shape!
@kateowatts: aw, thanks!
@asunw: Ha, the opposite journey! I guess you balanced me out :)
@Miss Hamster, Miss Frozen Yogurt: I think this is going to end up being a 5 part series until the conclusion, I hope people don’t hate me by the end! And yes, I know the cheese thing is weird. Especially since I love all other dairy products! I do like mozzarella though, will you still be friends with me now?! :D

@Mrs. D’orsay: I thought so! You posted a teaser pic way back when and I thought… that dress looks familiar! It’s a beautiful dress, but I couldn’t get it to fit me properly. Glad it looked so awesome on you!
@Miss French Fries: :( Sorry Wisconsin!

I’ve been stalking out that same exact lace dress from David’s, too. It’s literally the only dress from there that I like.

I love the last dress on you…love it! I was the same way. I went in there with one idea and walked out with a dress that wasnt on my list. We all think we know what we like, but we pick out dresses from pictures of tooth pick thin models! I thought Alfred Angelo color collection was the one for me and then I put it on and it did not flatter me at all. I walked out with a beautiful Allure lace gown with yummy buttons down the back and sparkle in the front on the bodice. I LOVE HER! :)

The lace dress looks lovely on you. I firmly believe that all over lace is simple. ;) Tomboys in lace need to stick together. There’s something about lace that dresses you up but allows you to still look like you. (or maybe it’s all in my head!)

Your post was a bit of nostalgia for me! A friend of mine for whom I was a BM tried on both your first dress and third dress in this post! She actually went with the first one but with a black sash instead of white. She also had it custom made because she hates the cumberbund pleating deal going there.

I think number four is certainly the best of these! The lace looks very pretty on you.

BTW, I love your writing voice and your posts! And of course, info that applies to me geographically.

I am not particularly fond of cheese, either, so don’t worry, you’re not the only one! :)
