About Mrs. Nachos

Tales of an Excessive Sweater

December 17th, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Nachos

For someone that is always chilly, I sweat. A lot. It’s always been an issue for me to the point where in the summer, I have to be careful of what colored shirts I wear, because sweat marks are never pretty and they show more in certain colors. My mom always said it was a sign that I was healthy. If that’s the case, I ooze health by dripping it from my armpits.

I love Ugly Betty/America Ferrara and I totally feel for her knowing this picture is out there (although I guess I’m just perpetuating the spread of this picture, but it’s for educational purposes, I swear!)…

Thinking about being in the Caribbean has me a little worried, especially since all eyes are going to be on us and lots of pics will be taken. Heat + me = AHHHH pit stains, and that is NOT something I want all over my taffeta wedding dress. So, I have to weigh my options…

Option 1: regular deodorant

Though, this is not really an option since I’ve been using it for years and it has failed me more times than I care to remember. I’ve always been jealous of the girls that can wear cute fitted tops with sleeves in the summer and never seem to sweat. Please please please tell me your secrets!

Option 2: clinical strength

I’ve tried a few – Dove, Dry Idea, Degree – and they’ve all worked for about a week. But then it’s armpit waterfalls and stink all over again. Right now I’m using the Degree Clinical Strength, which seemed very promising in the beginning, but now after a few weeks of use, it’s getting to that point again and I’m running out of options.

Option 3: prescription deodorant

I’ve tried this and it was fantastic for a few months. You put it on before bed, shower in the morning, and you seriously do not sweat for a week. But just like everything else I’ve tried thus far, my body figured out what I was trying to do and fought me every step of the way by sweating even more. And let me tell you, the nights I used it, I did not sleep. It causes this burning, itchy, really irritating feeling that makes you want to get up and wash it off anyway.

Option 4: Botox

Tales of an Excessive Sweater : wedding beauty 52 5

This is the one that I have yet to try, but I am definitely intrigued. 6 months with no sweat??? To me, that sounds like a little piece of heaven wrapped in diamonds and covered in puppy dogs and rainbows. I figured if I’d ever get it done, it would be for my wedding. It’s a special occasion that calls for some drastic decision making! So I called my dermatologist to get some info. Apparently, it works for most people. Now, I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to spend that kind of money and go through 14 shots in my pits, I kind of want a better guarantee. The procedure at this particular doctor’s office costs $1000. Ouch.

I called up my insurance company to see if they would cover it. Their policy is that you had to have tried and failed using regular strength, clinical strength, and prescription deodorants, and get a note from your doctor saying so. Check, check, and check. After that though, they’ll cover 80% after the deductible is met, which for me is $500. So basically I’d end up having to pay $600. I could swing it… the question is, do I want to?

As I sit here writing and sweating, my answer for today is a resounding yes (as I cringe at the thought of those needles in my pits). Tomorrow, it could be a no because I’ll probably think of all the other things that money could be put towards, especially wedding related stuff. Then again, it could be considered wedding related because I won’t have to worry about being stinky when I say, “I do”. Then again, what if I’m part of the small handful of people it doesn’t work for?

Grrrrrr. I hate internal debates and I’m pretty torn at this point, but I’ll keep you posted if I decide to take the armpit Botox plunge.

Are you an excessive sweater? What has worked for you?

I don’t know that I’d go as far as Botox….I use Secret Clinical Strength, and its amazing. I realize you use that now….I don’t know hun. Botox, well I guess if it works for you and you have the extra money to spend.

Just like you, I’ve tried alll of those “strongest on the market” clinical anti-antiperspirants, and they work for a bit, and then just stop. I do my best to avoid excessive sweating (don’t put on blazers and jackets until I get somewhere, wearing a lot of black and making sure the fabric won’t show sweatstains), but it is SUCH a pain. I’m curious to see how the botox works out for you.

I think it is worth a try. Since you have tried everything else and it hasn’t worked, it sounds like you don’t really have a lot of options. Plus, I’m guessing that the doctors are going to numb you up so that you don’t feel them stabbing you multiple times with needles!

I have the same issue! I am currently using Certain Dry and night and so far I like that but my body figures me out as well.

I don’t understand how I can be freezing but still be sweating!

I don’t sweat quite as much as you do but what I have found useful is Certain Dry or Dri - not sure which. It used to only be available by prescription and then it was just behind the counter and now it’s on the shelf. It’s similar to the Drysol in that you put it on at night although you can shower whenever you want. I have found it to be less itchy as long as I keep my arms up until it dries which doesn’t take too long. And then it lasts for days with no sweat and then only a little sweating for weeks after that. It’s about $6 bucks and might be worth a try before $600.

I’ve gotten the botox injections before and I LOVE IT. Works like a charm. However, you still obviously need to sweat, so the sweat just comes out of other places..(mine was between my boobs, which was way better than armpits in my opinion!)

Have you tried Certain Dri? I’ve always had a problem with excessive sweating, and it’s the only thing that’s done the trick for me.

I’m with you. In highschool I had the same problem and I know how big of a pain it is trying to find clothes that won’t make it worse. Luckily, the drysol worked for me and I grew out of it. I think that if you think it will make your wedding day more enjoyable, then go for it. You can get more wedding stuff, but if your too worried about sweating then you won’t enjoy it anyway.

I want to get the botox. I’ve seen it done on youtube and it doesn’t look that painful.

I HAVE PIT BOTOX - its worth every penny to me!!! I live in colder weather and come winter time ALL of my cashmere or wool/cashmere blend sweaters were being ruined. I thought of the dollars worth of sweaters that were being ruined and compared that to the dollars I was going to spend on Pit Botox and its been the BEST money spent!

I would try it, I’m in the same boat as you and remember being in middle school, soaking through shirts and then sweaters and of course, everyone making jokes about me.

The price sucks but then again, I’d rather have that than waste a bunch of money on “anti antiperspirants” that never work!

I’m am in the exact same boat as you Nachos!!!! I’m getting married in New Orleans in May. Really considering the Botox too…I’m thinking about it like this: Dress = ruined with sweat. Pictures = ruined with sweaty pit pics. Happiness = everything when it comes to your wedding day. I have been an excessive sweater in my armpits since my early teens and I know how stressful and embarrassing it can be. I think it’s worth the money…I haven’t talked to a derm yet. Did yours say that it fades over time? Like can I do it now and it’s just as effective in May?

Mitchum deodorant! I used to date a guy that would sweat a LOT and I did my fair share of investigation - Mitchum was the savior of saviors! It worked so well, I started using it myself (the woman’s version) and I haven’t used anything else since! They sell it at Wal-Mart or you can buy it through Drugstore.com or Amazon and sometimes at Costco. It’s so great that I dedicated a portion of my precious luggage space just for it! In my defense, I was moving to Asia for a year and didnt know what to expect of the summers but what I thought was a 1-yr supply turned out to last much longer! Almost 2 years and another continent later, and I still have a stash of it left!

It really does last, even on the hottest and muggiest of days! Try the unscented version since their scents aren’t particularly pleasing, but it sure does work!

I’m glad some other commentors had success with the pit Botox, I didn’t :( I even got it on the palms of my hands too; didn’t work at all and hurt like a mother-f%$#er.
I was 18 when I got it, so maybe my age had something to do with it. Here’s hoping it works for you!!!

the man is a crazy sweat-er, and after trying every kind of clinical strength, etc., he tried botox injections. the first time, he did it in april, and it lasted almost through the entire summer. fabulous. then, he did it again in october, and it didn’t really work. maybe it’s because it’s colder and he’s wearing more layers, but the first time he had it done, he would go to work in summer in a l/s shirt and not sweat through it, and now, it’s not the case. so maybe the botox is like the deodorant and your body gets used to it….?

I’m only an excessive sweater on my forehead. When I get nervous, woo boy. It’s bad. I found a clinique product that kills that though, which is pretty win.

I had a friend who used to use rubbing alcohol. That was the only thing that worked for her. I don’t know if that’s the case for most people. :p

Ah, I love that you posted this! I have the same exact problem and also consider fabrics, temperature, activity level, etc. every single day. Except I also get shiny face when I sweat! Arghh… I am so curious about the Botox pit shots, and the very selfish side of me wants you to get them so you can tell us about it! But do what you’re comfortable with, for sure :)
