Mrs. Scissors's Picture
Mrs. Scissors, LaGrange, GA Age and Occupation: 25, Photography & Graphic Design Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Engineering Grad Student Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house! About Me: I’m a six-foot-three bride with a fifty-foot personality! I love great art, fabulous design, intense color, tons of music, indie photography, watching movies on repeat, and being really awesome. This super-tall, Southern, loud, quirky, neurotic artist is marrying a German, quiet, silly, super-amazing roboticist in an eclectic, funky, fun, snazzy, technicolored June wedding. Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! We’re bringing giant paper cranes, six-foot-tall portraits, fortune cookies, a photo booth, a club-circuit DJ, handcuffs, and possibly a kidnapping to this small Southern town. Watch out, y’all, and try to keep up!
About Mrs. Scissors

Neither Mr. S nor I are very dancily-inclined. We’re both pretty awkward people, to be perfectly honest. I forget how long my limbs are. Mr. S has big feet. I have tiny feet. I giggle or act like a fool when I’m nervous. I think our idea of dancing is jumping up and down. We’re really good at that. Mr. S can totally rock the Nathaniel Dance. Regular dancing? We’re not so good at that.

I took ballroom dancing in middle-school. The only thing I remember about it is always being paired with the shortest dude and how to do the boxy dance move doo-dad.

I’m not sure how Mr. S and I will handle our first dance as far as “moves” go. Maybe we’ll just wing it? That sounds like us. We do, however, have a pretty good idea of what we want our first dance song to be– “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. It’s a sweet song, but also sort-of fits in with our omnipresent “We’re going to be who we are, damnit” theme. Life and love are not always ponies and rainbows, but we’ll always be there to back each other up.

Without further ado, here’s the song if you haven’t heard it. (And yes, it was on that Old Navy sweater commercial. Leave me alone).

’Cause I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

It’s a little less cheesy than most first dance songs, but with just as much sweetness and meaning. (Even though I doubt Mr. S’s insanely thick hair will ever need Rogaine. Maybe we should replace that part with Just for Men Gel).

Not to turn all mush-pot on y’all, but I think another reason this song gets to me is the fact that Mr. Scissors really does take me the way I am. I am a handful, to say the least, and he doesn’t try to change me or push me to be something I’m not. He accepts and loves me despite all of my faults, neuroses, and broken parts. And vice-versa. We’re in this together.

So, Mr. S, if you try not to step on my dress, I’ll try not to step on your toes.

How did you choose your first dance song? Is it more of a traditional first dance song, or something that is a little off-the-beaten-path?

I love that song! I’m thinking about “Lucky” from Jason Mraz (although I also love “The Luckiest” from Ben Folds, but I worry it’s a little TOO off the beaten path).

I think your song is very sweet and heartfelt.

This was our first dance song too! I loved it. My bridesmaid’s surprised us and clapped during the chorus, and it was a perfectly short amount of time.

haha, @elisterine, we’re totally using ‘The Luckiest’ by Ben Folds.

We think it’s perfect for us - somewhat awkward, but adorably so. The first time I heard it, I knew that’s what I wanted to dance to with Franklin. I’m so excited!

That is a very cute song, just perfect for a first dance! We are still in negotiations about our first dance song…

The first time I heard this song was when Mrs. Powderpuff talked about her sister singing it at her wedding. Now, I absolutely adore it and feel like I HAVE to use it in my wedding somewhere.

Great choice! We’re using “Sweet Pea” by Amos Lee…also known for being in the At&T commercial…because I travel a lot for work and the FI would always text me the lyrics while I was gone. Yes, we’re cheesy.

This is our first dance song too! We love it because it describes us so well. I’m always cold and have headaches and while I don’t think CatholicGroom will need Rogaine, I will fix his pants when he tears them. Such a sweet song!

Neither my fiance and I are dancers. We will have our first dance (to “First Day of My Life” by Conner Oberst), but after that, we plan on sitting back and enjoying the show. I’m a little worried, however, that NO ONE will dance…and that will be very awkward. We’re only having about 50 guests. I was thinking maybe we should have a live band to watch instead of a dj…that way, it will be okay (or at least not so bad) if we have a dance free reception. Er…I hope.

one time i tried to teach my partner the basic swing move. he isn’t a dancer. it ended in us just swaying side to side like 8th graders, because that’s about all we could manage.

We danced to “Hard to Concentrate” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers…yeah, people were surprised. If you haven’t heard it, find it on youtube and listen to it! My husband made me listen to this song about 2 months into our relationship when I was have one of those “really-I’m-dating-this-guy-that-drives-me-insane” days. And then that song saved us. More than once. It was perfect.

I LOVE it when people choose songs because it’s what they feel and who they are…not just because someone else has used it or hasn’t. Be you!

We switched it up a little bit - because we’re a little traditional, but a little funky-fresh :)

First minute was “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. Then we merged into “I wanna grow old with you” - Wedding Singer.

I love both songs, and we got to have a quiet minute together, and then when we realized all eyes were on us, we got to be a little silly!
