Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

My Sister is the Best!

December 18th, 2009 @ 12:11 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Back in October, I was talking to Sister Guinea Pig on the phone and as we were about to hang up, I remembered I had something to ask her - I quickly/shyly asked if she’d be willing to take some engagement photos of Mr. Guinea Pig and me while we were all at my parents’ house. She kind of giggled and said “Sure, that would be fun.” I excitedly thanked her, did a little heel click and went on with my day.

A week later, Sister GP called me on my way in to work/school and when I answered she said, “Happy one month until your birthday!” I thought that was kind of weird, since even I hadn’t been keeping track that closely. Then she went on to say “So… mom and the person who’s going to give you your birthday gift. I think I should tell you about it now so you have time to prepare.” I’ll admit, this had me a little worried - what could I possibly need to prepare for?! But then she said, “Remember the photographer we both liked who shot my friend’s wedding this summer? I got you an engagement session with him while you’re out in California!” Eeee!!! I literally squealed with joy (like a {guinea} pig!). There may have been dancing, jumping up and down… and even some wild clapping. At the time, I was standing in a courtyard that three buildings look out over and I definitely saw at least two people staring at me wondering what on earth I was doing. I am so (so SO) excited! Even that is an understatement. I felt like I was floating on a cloud all day - I can’t wait! And she had already started arranging it when I asked her to take photos of us, which is why she thought it was so funny I had asked!

Sherman Chu is a wedding photographer who lives in the East Bay of CA (near my parents), and we arranged a session while I was out there for Thanksgiving! He took these great photos of my sister’s friend Aubrey’s wedding:

After hearing that wonderful news, my task was to figure out where we wanted to take our engagement photos! My parents live among some foothills, which could make for some pretty awesome nature shots, or they’re only a short drive from Berkeley, Oakland, or even San Francisco! I love the iconic areas of SF (Golden Gate Bridge, Telegraph Hill, and Alcatraz to name just a few), but those don’t really hold any meaning for Mr. Guinea Pig and me since we’ve never been to San Francisco together! So, I figured we were better off finding something beautiful in nature, architecture, or color rather than cultural landmarks. I have so many engagement photos saved for inspiration, I’ll have to share them all in another post! And did I mention this would be the perfect excuse to get a cute new dress (ordered from the comfort of my couch)? Yesss!

What kind of setting did you take your engagement photos in? Did you use a different photographer for engagement photos than your wedding photog?

We got lucky…we can’t really afford an e-session currently, so we found an art student trying to build her portfolio and willing to do it for free! It was great! She picked out a park in Boston we’d never been to. It was really fun! Trying to find an outfit for the day was stressful though!
I’m not sure if we’ll use her for our wedding day though…as we want someone with more experience most likely

That’s so exciting! :) What a great surprise! Even though I kinda regret it now, we didn’t have e-pics done because we just didn’t have the money.

That’s so great! I kind of wish we had had our pictures done with cooler backgrounds. Bring tons of inspiration to give the photographer!

HOORAY for the East Bay!!
Tilden Park is always nice (I imagine some cute photos on the carousel) and the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland or the Berkely Botanical Gardens!

But then there is San Francisco, the city that has stolen my heart. Crissy Field, Dolores park or GG park (the arboretum!) are always lovely!

I can’t wait to see where you take your photos! (If you couldn’t tell I love hearing about stuff in my home region!)

What a great sister/mom! Seriously- how thoughtful of them. Can’t wait to see what you guys shoot!

We used the same photographer and did a lot of shooting at a vintage gas station and a bunch of iconic Seattle city locations.

Our wedding photographer is just starting out (we are her second paid wedding) and she was so thrilled that she included our e-session for free.
We did our session at a castle, a gothic cemetery (creepy but beautiful) and a park.

nice!!! we’re actually having a number of our friends shoot mini “engagement” sessions for us. I thought this would allow for a variety of photos and for us to have pictures through our friends’ point of view of us…plus its a fun time hanging out w/ friends..though awkward to have to do those kissyface photos in front of them.

what a rockstar sister! Go Sister GP! We didn’t get engagement photos taken because we had some already awesome photos of us that more than served the purpose. I started regretting that decision as we got closer to the wedding, so my photog offered to take photos of us for our 1 year Anniversary instead! Now I can’t wait for that!

We took our engagement photos in a local state park. We got some amazing scenery shots where we are little people on a bridge. :) We also did this with our wedding photographer. He said he was happy for the change of pace from the usual venues.
