About Mrs. Pug

The Sole Around My Brain is Quite Thick

December 18th, 2009 @ 10:50 am by Mrs. Pug

I am a few standard deviations below the national IQ when it comes to shoes. I committed sins like wearing gym socks with any shoe, not just sneakers (and fugly shoes at that), which led me to the totally self-created and false belief that my feet were a good whole size above my actual shoe size. People, this lasted into my twenties. This is embarrassing.

I am also a wuss about wearing heels. My knees hurt even thinking about it. Oh of course, once in a while I would stray and buy a pair of cute heels, usually for work, only to end up hating myself as I slowly pried the shoe from my bloody foot at the end of a day.

So after all these lessons learned and the bitterness with which I regard my past cobbler foibles, what do you think I decided to do for our wedding? Yep, you guessed it! I’m wearing HEELS! Not just any heels, but 3.5″ heels!

I searched high and low (I mean, as high and low as one can go without leaving the comfortable butt imprint on her chair in front of the computer) for shoes under $100. I did not want satin shoes, since all I will almost certainly snag and stain them. I preferred peep toes to relieve a bit of the pressure caused by walking in heels. And I wanted color, like many other brides.

Something like this would have been lovely (Christian Louboutin slingbacks):

Note: I once went apesh%t at a Bergdorf Goodman designer shoe mega “sale” (”sale” meant 65% marked down from $1000) and giggled maniacally while trying on dozens of shoes. However, these CL’s broke two of my rules. Not only were they satin, but practically bazooka-ed my $100 rule.

These Chinese Laundry shoes were a much more affordable option, for $19.95 from 6PM.com:

At some point in life, my sister had a bloody and blistery battle with a tenacious set of Chinese Laundry shoes and forbade me from buying these (how you like that alliteration, btw?).

This Cynthia Rowley pair was nice, and only a smidgen above my budget at $112 at 6PM.com:

However, still over budget. Eventually, I found these Tahari slingbacks at DSW ($75; no longer available):

Yipee! I have been occasionally wearing the shoes around the apartment to break them in and train myself to walk in heels in a manner that doesn’t look like my kneecaps are falling off.

Did you break out of your usual habits in buying shoes for your wedding?

Cute shoes…you picked a great pair! I must admit…those Louboutin shoes made me audibly sigh. They’re just so beautiful.

Those are really great shoes. I think they’re a great shoe at an affordable price. :) Choosing color for my shoes is something I definitely regret not doing! I was swayed by my more traditional mom/sister/aunt and went with ivory. If I could do it again, I would rock a bright color!

Thoses are all pretty shoes.

Buying shoes is always tough. Of course, you only have one pair of feet, so you have to make sure they fit well (and there’s nothing worse than poor fitting shoes). I have noticed, however, that there is a difference between shoes that are a good price and expensive shoes that are marked way down. Call me a shoe snob, but I have a harder time finding comfortable shoes if they’re made in Brazil or China.

Yay, cute shoes! Good idea to “break them in” though, new-shoe blisters day-of would not be fun :P

I’ve been walking around in my heels (which are satin), and I’m so paranoid that I’m going to stain them! But, I need to avoid blisters….. I tend to suffer the same bloody foot syndrome that you do. But, your choice is beautiful! Nice job staying within your goals and your budget!!!

I wanted purple. FH wanted “traditional”. So, I went traditional since it seemed to be important to him. But I keep shoe-cheating on my purchased shoes by sneaking around and looking at other, more colorful, shoes on the internet.

I really like the ones you chose! I’ve currently bought 3 pairs of shoes for the wedding but none are the right ones…

My story is almost exactly the same! I wore flip-flops until it snowed every year and then gym shoes the rest of the time. And I just bought 3.75″ heels for the ceremony. I’ve never had anything that tall in my life! I’ve been practicing around the apartment too - let’s hope it goes well!

First of all, to clarify, I’m pretty sure your foot ’sin’ in your younger days was not wearing any socks at all. or shoes. everywhere. esp in restaurants. during dinner.

More importantly, though, excellent choice of the hot pink patent heels! whoo hoo!

I’m a heel girl all the way, but that’s because I’m 5′3″ and like to give myself a little more height when I can. Lately, I’ve been wearing flats to work and so many people of commented on how short I am, and how they didn’t realize. The shoes you chose are great!

I love the pink! I think I like them better than the CL’s. I am a sucker for colored patent leather.

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: I can totally relate (I’m 5′2″) The past 3 years I have almost lived in flats- before that everything had a heel. It freaked me out how short I felt in flats- but I’ve gotten used to it.

haha… I’m trying to picture you walking around in shoes looking like your knee caps are falling off.. my office-mate probably thinks I’m nuts right about now. I feel like I’ve worn heels forever, so I have no trouble walking/dancing/running down the hall in them. But I am very careful to break in a new pair around the house before I brave a 10 hour work-day with them on!

Love all these shoes. The one you ended up going with looks great - and since it has a bit of a platform, hopefully it won’t feel *as* high!

Love all those shoes; they look really similar to the ones I ended up with! I”m wearing them around the house to break them in. They look good with jammies.

I have a solution to the blister problem! I had been getting blisters for years until I found blister block. Its a product made by band-aid that you rub on your feet to prevent blisters. It is amazing, it causes less friction which keeps blisters from forming. https://www.bandaid.com/couponBlisterBlock.jsp

Love the ones you picked! Breaking them in before the wedding is key, I think.
