I love reading photographers’ blogs. And not just wedding photographers! I love photographs of all people (and creatures!) - it makes me so happy seeing people smiling, in love, having fun. Especially when there are animals involved. In other words, I had no shortage of places to look when I needed inspiration for our engagement session (still so excited to write that)! After collecting what seems like hundreds of photos I love, I’ve discovered a few themes running through them. So I now present to you: a tour of photos I would like to Photoshop myself and Mr. Guinea Pig into (or, you know, take just as awesome photos with Sherman Chu):
In nature
(StudioFoto - so cute!)
(Anna Kuperberg - imagine this with Mr. GP’s bright red hair against the grass!)
(StudioFoto - ah, fields of grass)
(Anna Kuperberg - I love this photo so much: it’s as though when she looks at him, it makes him fly)
(Hoffer Photography - how awesome is that arc of water?!)
Now the problem with some of these is that we’ll be doing our photos in late November, so forget the tank tops (and maybe even the cute dress - nooo!), waving grasses, and getting in frigid water. Although it rains in the winter in CA, so the grass might actually be green instead of the lovely brown it is all summer! But I better start researching cute new jackets…
Urban (-ish)
(Brian Dorsey - brings to mind a classic love story)
(Brett Butterstein - love the open blue sky and the lampposts leading to the couple!)
(StudioFoto - there’s an old railway line close to my parents’ house!)
(Brian Dorsey - this photo is so playful!)
I like the idea of finding some cool architectural elements to play with but I must admit I am more drawn to photos in nature. However, by far my favorite category is the one where light plays a major role in the photo (whether in a nature setting or an urban one)…
Youu…. light up my liiiiife
(Apertura - oh, how amazing is the light in this photo?)
(Apertura - playing with shadows is a favorite of mine)
(Brett Butterstein - I wish we had some caves to explore!)
(Jessica Claire - this photo just says ’happiness’ to me)
(Anna Kuperberg - what perfect lighting! I love reading kuperblog)
And in a subcategory of ’amazing light’, I think I have discovered that I absolutely love silhouettes/backlighting.
(Found on Le Love, Flickr here)
(Punam Bean - so perfect when the light is between the two people)
(Punam Bean - it looks like they are sitting on Cloud 9!)
(Punam Bean… again!)
Going through engagement photo sessions has been super helpful for me - I now know that I need to schedule our session so that a setting sun is hopefully included in our time frame, and we definitely have to find a great nature/outdoors location.
I also have to give a special section to the photographer whose blog initially got me hooked on photography and photo blogs, and whose website I still check daily for new updates: Abigail Seymour. I’m not sure if it’s just that she was the first wedding photographer I ever really followed (long before getting engaged, because a friend used AS for her wedding), or if her photography is really that amazing, but I love everything she does. So here are a few parting engagement photo inspirations, all shot by the wonderful Abigail Seymour:
(Too bad we won’t be on the East Coast!)
(this looks like a painting, it’s amazing)
(A library! An awesome idea)
(Ooh la la!)
(There’s that lighting I love)
(Must get a shot like this)
Where do you look for photography inspiration? What’s your favorite engagement session? I wish I had the guts to pull off a themed photo session (think vintage, ’40s, rock ’n’ roll, or anything, even) but we’re just not that into one thing in particular. Would you do a themed session?
