Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

Growing up Catholic in a very Jewish neighborhood was kind of fun. I had my Confirmation as my neighbors were getting Bar Mitzvah’d, and I was able to learn about their traditions and they got to see mine. One of our family traditions was to put up Christmas lights every year on my dad’s birthday. And every year, my dad bought more and more strands of lights, so every year our house glowed a little more than the last. It was actually pretty funny being the only house on the block that had lights because we stood out like a sore thumb.

I have grown to love Christmas lights and if I could put up lights like in NL Christmas Vacation (above), I would!

Over the last 2 holiday seasons, poor Mr. Na-na-nachos learned just how deep my obsession with lights during the holidays runs. He did tell me that he loved the lights at my parents’ house every year growing up which gave me the warm fuzzies inside (and the green light to go nuts, although I don’t think that was his goal, hee hee). My tradition that I started when I moved out on my own was to put up the Christmas lights the day after Thanksgiving, and take them down on New Year’s Day. Mr. Nachos helped put them up last year, and was there when I bought us 4 more boxes of lights right after Christmas, just like my dad always did. He dreaded putting them up again this year, but alas, he can’t escape now and my tradition has become our tradition. :) So, we broke out the tape and Mr. Nachos and I successfully made it look like Santa threw up all over our apartment…

Needless to say, we were busy! I’m so happy with the way everything turned out and although he hates to go around and turn off all of the lights before we go to bed, I think he likes the overall look of the place as much as I do! OK, maybe not that much, but hopefully close. I’m in love the fact that we are starting traditions like my family did and I can’t wait to share memories like the ones I have growing up, with our future family.

What’s an old (or new) holiday tradition you’ve started up with your FI?

Wow - that Santa is rather creepy! :) I’m jealous of your decorations. I have a bunch of indoor lights and have epically failed to hang any of them up this year. Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow, since the East Coast Snowpocalypse will likely keep me from doing much of anything else…

… alright, I’m kinda spooked! I thought I was the only one in the WORLD that says that decorating for Christmas was Santa throw up. It annoys/ amuses my coworkers to death. Where did you hear that phrase? I use it ALL the time!

Aww I love the lights!! They look fantastic!

Right now we’re actually carrying out a tradition that I started with my family–making homemade caramel popcorn. We make batches and batches of it this time of year to give to friends, coworkers and neighbors to show our appreciation for all that they do.

I took a break just now, but he’s still in the kitchen, popping away! I can’t wait to do other traditions when we have kids–but that’s a long time from now!

“Santa threw up all over our apartment…” and “creepy santa” were the best lines :-D

I put more effort into Christmas decorations and presents and stuff since the FI is coming to my house for Christmas this year :] He really like his Christmas :)

Since my fiancee is from Sweden we made a trek this year as our first Christmas in America together and now have a “Christmas Goat” and made a special light thing (ha so sad I have no idea what it is called!) and we made a gingerbread house. I love that we were able to spend holidays here and there though so we both know what happened when we were kids!!!

Christmas just usurped Halloween as my favorite holiday this year.

I love Christmas lights more than a 30-something should and can’t wait to have a place of my own to light up.

“Santa throw up” cracked me up too.

I lived in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood as a child, too. Only four houses in our tract put up lights - and three of them belonged to my family! Having now lived in largely-Protestant suburbia for years, I’m still shocked by how much holiday decorating some people do.

The Boy and I have never been able to spend the holidays together, but we’ve discussed going to the beach on Christmas (which we’ve heard is popular in Australia) in the future…though I’ll probably be bundled up against the cold!

Cool! We do a similar “Christmas just threw up” kind of decorating at our place! Although, it’s the Dude who’s really into it–I just get to enjoy the fruits of his labor!!

I love twinkly lights, too!! While we only have the lights on our tree(s), I love turning off all of the lights and only having the fireplace & twinkle lights on at night. It is almost magical!

Growing up, my parents would never let us have a “real” tree. (Though we had three or four trees in my house). The first Christmas my fiance and I had together he bought me a real tree! We always get it from the tree lot across from his neighborhood and carry it across the street. Our tradition is to get the tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. We always collect sand dollars on the beach at his beach house on New Year’s and this year I put all the sand dollars on pretty Christmas ribbon and hung them from the tree. We also collect ornaments from all the places we visit during the year. It is fun putting the ornaments on the tree as it helps us remember fun trips and times together throughout the year and our relationship.

Miss Nachos, I love, love, love the “creepy” Santa. Very festive decorations in your home! Love it!

@KMSull: Haha, I’m not sure where I got the phrase from but I’ve said it every time someone has come over and seen the place :)

Your place looks great! I looove love love Christmas ornaments, so each year we pick out a new ornament together. Last year was the leg lamp from A Christmas Story, and this year we got Snoopy and Lucy in the kissing booth! LOVE THEM!

Haha, love the lights! All we did this year was a long row of lights all along the gutter of our house. And the only way I got that was to bribe Mr. Cola with NOT having to do wedding-something, and put up lights instead!

I love to drive around and look at the Christmas lights on other houses, in neighborhoods, and my family has always done Longwood Gardens @ Christmas. It’s my absolute hands down favorite thing to get all bundled up and walk among the trees at Longwood. This was the first year I made hubby go, and he actually enjoyed himself!

How festive and Christmasy! :) This year, because its our first year combining Christmas, we’re going to open our presents to each other in the evening on Christmas Day. We’ve got family stuff the rest of the holiday and will be staying at his parents place Christmas Eve/morning. I wanted to do something just the two of us, so this is going to work out.

Very festive!!! We started a tradition of each buying a new ornament every year and a “joint” ornament every year (something that I did as a child, but he did not).
