Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Wedding Ring Fail

December 19th, 2009 @ 11:35 am by Mrs. Spaniel

I love my engagement ring. In case you haven’t seen it before, it’s an oval halo setting with a flat pavé ½-eternity band on three sides of the shank.

Wedding Ring Fail : wedding rings Sweetsp One of my favorite things about my ring is that it is designed to sit flush with a wedding band. Unlike a lot of halos which have wide, low baskets, mine is prong-set above the band, and open below so that the wedding band can come right up against the engagement ring without leaving a gap.

When Mr. Spaniel and I picked my ring out, we tried it with the matching band. The band was made by the same manufacturer—the pavé band was the same width and height, with diamonds of the same shape and size and spacing. It was a perfect match, and Mr. Spaniel and I planned to buy it closer to the date.

A bit of advice: when you want something, and no substitute will do, BUY IT WHEN YOU SEE IT. Recently, we decided we were ready to buy my wedding ring and went back to the shop where we purchased the engagement ring last September to get it. Apparently, the store no longer does business with the company who made my engagement ring; they don’t carry the matching wedding band anymore, and can’t or won’t tell us who made it so that we can find it ourselves. The only information we have to go on is that the manufacturer is in Hong Kong, which is about as close to no information as I can imagine.

I tried a few other pavé wedding bands, but none were quite right: the metal was more prominent causing the spacing of the diamonds not to align, or the band didn’t come up high enough, or it was too wide, or it was way too expensive. We were looking for the perfect match, at $500. The best we could find was a similar ring that wasn’t a match (or even quite as good) for $750. I may be the only one who ever notices a mismatch that slight, but you can bet your spaniel I’d be noticing… every day. And I’m not really the kind of person to forget it over time, either.

So instead of the beautiful and bling-y match, which we can’t find, we’ll be getting me a plain white gold band, which will be a more practical option for me that I can wear daily and during most activities. I’m pretty okay with this. It will be a comfortable ring, and I won’t have to worry about little diamonds coming loose and falling out or needing to be cleaned all the time. But don’t get me wrong: I am hugely disappointed. I loved the way the matching ring looked with my wedding band, and I was looking forward to all the extra sparkle. So we’re thinking that, on some future anniversary, we’ll either get a custom band to match the engagement ring, or buy a new engagement and wedding set and re-set the oval diamond in it. Maybe we could do the Ritani Endless Love setting that I loved first?

If you got your engagement and wedding rings separately, did you end up with a different set than you’d imagined?

Maybe you could find an Etsy jeweler to make you the perfect ring?

While our engagement rings are platinum/white gold, we actually both want wedding bands that incorporate yellow gold! Personally I love how mixed metals look together and am having my wedding band made by a fabulous jeweler on etsy, who will most likely make C’s simple yellow band as well. I’ll probably still rock my engagement ring/wedding band together b/c that’s how I roll, but I’ll love each individually as well!
good luck!

You dont need the store. Your ring should have a hallmark on the inside. this hallmark is unique to the manufacturer.

If you email me the hallmark or a photo of it, I can look up the manufacturer for you (I work for a jeweler).

you can email me at reallynoway77 at hotmail.com

My engagement ring band broke, and we had a new setting and band created for the stone, and now I don’t like how our bands (which we had bought already) look with my new setting. So I’m going to wear my wedding ring on my right hand, and I’ve asked my fiance to buy a smaller semi-eternity band that I can wear stacked with my engagement ring as a gift on the day of the wedding.

We had my engagement ring custom made to match my grandma’s band. It actually can be relatively less expensive than buying a pre-made band. I would start talking to different jewelers to see what they can do for you, and if you can find one that does CADs, even better, cause you can tweak it before it’s even made.

We bought my band seperate from my e-ring…there was no matching band and the store even laughed at me when I tried to find one. We went elsewhere and it matches great and was in our price range. You should look elsewhere or even at jeweler who could make something to match!

Don’t give up hope of the blingy wedding band yet! I have to second what Nachos said about custom made bands. Sometimes they can be more affordable than the pre-made ones. This was the case for us when we bought our wedding bands (and also true when the hubs bought my engagement ring). I’d be happy to pass the name of the jeweler (in the LA jewelry district) where we got our wedding rings custom made. They were so affordable and do great work. At least check in to the custom route before you totally give up!

I totally agree with Miss Nacho…. I don’t know much about the jewelry district in your area but in Philly there are plenty of small craftsmen that often do custom pieces for larger well known shops. The one my FH bought my engagement ring from just happens to be my moms cousin. He custom made my ring and will be custom making both of our bands I found his prices to be very reasonable and will tweak my engagement ring so that it and band will work together. He also uses CAD which my FH found fascinating.

My engagement ring is very simple, which meant I had a lot of options for a wedding band that didn’t require any custom work. It was really nice to not have to worry about it.

I’ve never investigated getting anything custom made, but I’m sure there are reasonable people with reasonable prices out there. Do some digging and I bet you can find someone to make what you’re looking for!

if you were anywhere near NYC i know the best jeweler in the diamond district - he custom makes the most beautiful jewelry (including my e-ring) - there has to be a custom jeweler in LA, no?

Span, first of all, I adore your ring.
Second of all, you are even more on my favorite person list (cause you were there already!) for having this on an e.e. poem.

We’re getting ours separately, and it’s even more stressful lately because my e-ring isn’t technically an engagement ring.

@ms. awesome: Mixed metals *are* great! I wouldn’t mind doing a rose gold band, but since I know the exact match exists… I want it! ;)

@Emme: The inside of the ring is completely blank, and the mfr isn’t on the paperwork from the store, either. Is there some other kind of mark I should be looking for?

@Gilneas: I’m sorry your ring broke!! That sounds like a good solution, though!

@Miss Nachos: @WDWBride: @ChillyBear: @Sarah: @mander411: Okay okay, I’ll look into custom. :) I do live pretty close to the LA jewelry district, after all…

@MrsSpitzer: I’ll be PMing you about that jeweler. :) Part of the reason I haven’t gone to the jewelry district yet is because I haven’t had a good referral! We weren’t sure who to trust.

Thank you so much for the advice! You’ve made me reconsider my decision to wait on the wedding band!

Sigh…we did the same thing…trying to wait it out to earn some extra $ before making that purchase (and hoping that the price of gold would go down as well…haha!)…and now gold has gone up…grrrr so we are having a hard time finding a price on my band that isn’t $400 over what we were originally quoted! Eeeeek. Good luck!

With a zillion jewelry shops in Downtown LA, we weren’t sure who we could trust…so I turned to good ol’ Citysearch. Inta Gems had a ton of positive reviews online. We also felt better knowing they were the official jeweler of the Miss California USA Pageant. Made it all seem less sketchy. haha. We figured it couldn’t hurt to at least check them out…and we were really happy we did! They’re family-owned, worked with our budget and really knew their stuff! We ended up with the exact band I’d been looking for! I think they do custom work too. It’s worth a shot! Good luck!

So sorry you missed out on the perfect match! When I got my engagement ring, I knew there was a matching band, so we jumped really early on buying both wedding bands so that the match would still be available. After hearing your story, I’m glad we did. Hopefully you can come up with a suitable solution — sounds like a lot of people have some great ideas! Good luck in your search. I’m sure you’ll come up with something equally beautiful.

so glad we avoided this by buying a set, cause a slight mismatch would drive me crazy as well!!

My FI actually kinda upgraded my wedding band when he bought the engagement ring, because he was getting such a good sale. So they don’t match exactly… normally this would drive me crazy! But I think I’m ok with it partly because he choose them, partly because I don’t think anyone else will notice.

Miss Spaniel,

If your ring does not have a hallmark (sometimes a marking, sometimes a seriese of numbers) then it was most likely done by a mass producer or the store has removed the mark (not as unusual as you would think).

Does the paper work including any kind of secondary numeration that doesnt appear to make sense to you? Sometimes this number is the equivilant of a mark and will make sense to a jeweler.
