Sometimes I Embarrass Myself. : wedding resources 19 1

So, I like to write things down. A lot. I may be a super computer person, but I also find comfort in the act of writing things down. Also, I need something to keep me occupied at all times for fear of bouncing through windows or climbing into cabinets. I always keep 2 Moleskines on me at all times, which is another whole post a’ comin’, but yeah. I doodle, I sketch. I write stuff down or I won’t remember it. I think I’ve made my “I need something to write on” point clear.

In comes the idea of a wedding planner. Not the human kind, but the paper kind.

I always planned to make my own, but these days I’m trying to pick my battles. I can’t do EVERY SINGLE THING myself. I need to relinquish control.

A few months ago, with a huge coupon in hand, I trudged down to Borders with sweet Mr. S in tow. He waited patiently while I decided to indulge in my cheese. I sat on the floor with the binder-style planners surrounding me, and finally decided on one. However, there was only one copy, and it was all brokededed. Fail. I almost gave up on my cheese-fest, but Mr. S encouraged me to go to the other Borders that was a few blocks away. We went there and found 5 pristine copies! I will admit that I was a little embarrassed carrying this big pink monster to the checkout, but I think that’s part of the fun.

It even came with a hole-puncher and a free tote bag! (Free? I just paid for this thing…)

Sometimes I Embarrass Myself. : wedding resources 34 3

Look, business card holders for the business cards I still do not have! Failbride, I am.

Sometimes I Embarrass Myself. : wedding resources 44 4

In order to get to my “free tote bag”, I had to literally rip the package open. That was a little strange.

Sometimes I Embarrass Myself. : wedding resources 54 5

I assume it’s just so people won’t unfold or steal the fantastic tote inside. I rammed my fingers through and ripped that sucker open.

What I found next was a little disconcerting– there was a big fat advertisement for a website that I’d never heard of on the bottom. Or at least I don’t frequent. Not that I planned to carry this in public, but still, I don’t want to be a big ol’ advertisement for you, website I’ve never been to.

The actual content of this planner/binder/whatev is very good. It has some elements of cheese, especially the parts where you’re supposed to write about the proposal and other blah blah with your fiance. I’m sorry, I’m probably never going to do that.

I like all of the timelines and very specific stuff that is listed out for each part of the wedding. I also like that it’s all 3-ring-binderified so that I can add or delete stuff as I wish. There are folders in the back with cheesy photos on them, and I’m not totally sure how much said folders will hold. Again, I can always hackerate it.

Let’s see if I ever I actually use this puppy. I haven’t touched it very much, but I think that’s because I’m afraid to mess it up. Actually, writing in it almost feels like I’m going to jinx something! Or misspell it and over-zealously erase! Or, am I afraid of the cheese?

Do you have a planning binder? Did you put your own together, or buy one? If you bought one, or even put one together, have you avoided it, or has it become your wedding-savior?

*All photos by me!

Check with my son Orion. He may have another version of Obessed with You for your wedding song. http://www.theorionexperienceis@gmail.com

Yep, I have a previous version of this very book!
What I like about it least is that is doesn’t hold a full sheet of letter sized paper- you have to fold it to fit it into the folders. But, it was a good read. I added plastic sheet protectors to mine instead of using the folders, and use it predominently for holding important contracts, and little paper things that I want to keep in 1 spot. Thankfully, mine was not bright pink- I probably would not have bought it had it been!

I use Real Simple’s Wedding Guide. Best book/magazine/organizer I ever did buy.

@Kate Simprini: That would be fantastic! I’ll do that. :)

@AJ: This version is full-sized, thankfully. I’ve also ghetto-rigged it significantly since I took these pictures/wrote this. lol

I have that exact same thing and I too haven’t really touched it!

The “free” tote bag cracks me up every time. Like I’m really going to carry a bright pink bag that says “Bride” on the side to every wedding-related thing I do. HA!

My advice is dip your toe in the water by writing in the big wedding planner in pencil. I wrote stuff in mine at the beginning and of course, some things were WAY different by then, in a good way.

You crack me up too! my husband is also from Altanta and he says stuff like brokededed all the time!

@hergreenapples: The funny thing is that I actually do carry the notebook and a lot of my wedding [read:all off] paraphernalia in it. I just don’t take it out in public. It just goes from my apartment to my car, and from my car to my parents’ house. :p Stupid thing actually is helpful. lol

@missrachelk: I downloaded the Russel+Hazel worksheets for a toe-dipper. I’ve sort-of dipped there. lol. And making up words is the bestest. :p

@evahesse: Lol. Yes. “Hi, I’d like to rent a bra, some underpants, and a slip plz. Thanks.” Not happenin’. By that logic, I’d be renting everything.

Haha I really enjoy your style of writing - keeps me laughing :)

I keep a binder (3-ring, that is) filled with pictures from magazines etc…it’s not very organized though. I just put anything in there that appeals to me in any way, shape, or form and then I go through it periodically to weed out what I’ve “gotten over” or keep what I really like.

I’m usually a perfectionist but I’ve abandoned trying to keep that binder organized. Now it’s just more of a “vision” binder than a “details” binder.

The best organizer planner I got out of the millions I purchased is THE ULTIMATE WEDDING PLANNING KIT - it’s pink and it has all these seperate folders, a small book you can take with you to write in and another to help you chose fashion. It’s very handy. I love it!!! I wish I hadn’t wrote everything in pen! I have had to change so much in 7 months!
Seriously start looking for it, I dont know how you could possibly hate it.

I used The Knot’s Ultimate Wedding Planner that has all the worksheets we need. They also included all the questions to ask each vendor. Definitely a life-saver! I also created my own hot pink binder, with colorful tabs for each section. :D I like the business-card insert on yours!

Don’t feel bad. I spent about an hour at Borders looking for the *perfect* wedding planning kit. This was in my top three. I settled on the kit that comes in the plastic briefcase-type-thing, complete with folders for each wedding topic to keep clippings and contracts and such. You can even put a picture of something on the outside, where I put a black and white picture of mysel and Manfriend. Oh, and lets not forget the poster size timeline to hang on your wall.

I made my own… I bought two earlier in the engagement, but neither of them really ended up doing what I needed them to do (organize my thoughts and not fudge up my contacts!). It’s one of my only wedding DIYs, though, so I totally feel you on not being able to do *everything* yourself. ;)

American Express briefly had a theknot.com-branded card which we got as the dedicated wedding credit card, and it came with a big ol’ binder of checklists and whatnot. It was nice to have a single gathering place for all my stuff. I added a bunch of extra pages and pocketed dividers, plus all the pages I’d torn out of magazines and printed off the internets.

The best thing I did with it, which constitutes 90% of the bridal advice I have to offer anyone, is I got rid of all other options once I’d made a choice. Once I bought the dress, all dress images went in the recycling bin. I sent three pages of instruction to the florist, and threw out about six pages of boutonniere ideas. That way the binder never got insanely out of control, and I wasn’t overwhelmed with second-guessing.

I have this planer too! I didn’t like the pink much so I switched the pink binder for another that I liked. So far I have been using it and I like it.

This is off topic, but I love the way you take photos! Do you use Photoshop to change the tone/color like in the 7th photo from the top? Just curious.
