Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

On a Sunday not too long ago, Mr. Spaniel and I had the meeting we had ever-so-eagerly awaited since we’d booked our venue: it was the day that Mr. Spaniel and I selected our menu!

We decided to go with an hour of unlimited passed hors d’oeuvres, including melon-wrapped prosciutto, crab stuffed mushrooms, teriyaki beef skewers, and potato pancakes with apple sauce. Prosciutto e melone is Mr. Spaniel’s all-time favorite appetizer (so it was an easy choice, even though I don’t eat pork), and we are both pretty happy with the stuffed mushrooms and beef skewers, but we’re not totally crazy about the vegetarian option… we might still switch it out for the spinach and feta puffs or the vegetarian spring rolls. But my grandma will love the pancakes, so they’re staying on the menu for now. As for the entrée, we already knew what we were selecting as dinner options (chicken with artichoke and prime rib) so that was relatively uneventful, but the vegetarian option turned out to be a happy surprise: egg noodle goat cheese ravioli! It sounds so good, Mr. Spaniel and I will probably both end up ordering it!

I hope our dinner looks like this!

Less eagerly awaited was the selection of our linens. Our choices were basically these: white floor length tablecloth (that’s it), and polyester overlay and napkins in one of 15 (bleh) colors. We went with a black overlay and ivory napkins, which didn’t thrill me to death or anything, but it will be functional and at least our ivory (or green, or lavender) rose petals among the centerpieces will stand out against the dark tablecloth. We thought about doing green napkins, but I think they will be too difficult to match in other accents (they were more mint and less olive), so we passed. It kind of makes me wish I could throw money at linen rentals, but I think we are getting a more substantial impact by throwing it at the chairs instead—we upgraded the white wooden folding chairs (which I saw set up for a wedding, and which were in dire need of a thorough cleaning) to dark Chivari chairs.

And: it’s done. The only decor-related decisions we have left to make, I think, concern table numbers and place cards (and maybe choosing which picture frames to use for our old wedding photo collection). This is a weight off my shoulders!

By the way, can I just mention how weird it is to start writing about things like the menu, linens, and table numbers? Like, is our wedding actually so close that it’s okay to talk about details now? This is so weird!

Did budget prevent you from having the linens you wanted? What did you get, and in a perfect world, what would you have chosen?

I too am jealous of your chivaris! I really wanted even just folding padded wooden chairs but they were a full dollar more than the regular white ones (which also look like they are in dire need of a cleaning) so I think I will have to settle for the white ones. And I was so bored with the napkin color choices, too! Apparently the rental companies are unaware that seafoam green (in my case) is not exactly an “in” color anymore. I wish I could have my yellow-green!

The title of this post is amazing. Linens rentals are ridiculously priced; the cost is definitely making me stick with ivory. At least that makes it an easy decision!

@S-berry: @Mrs. Hot Cocoa: @Dillybar: Glad you liked! It made me chuckle. :)

@Mrs. Mouse: Yes! I just hope I don’t spill marinara on myself (I’m kind of known for it!) ;)

I’m still trying to decide, in light of my decision to not make napkins, if I want to sew some sort of table overlay. I love the dark table/light napkin combo.

MMMMMM @ your menu. Budget hasn’t played a factor into our linen choices, but mainly because I’m a nut. “I want plain. White. And I want that craft paper as runners so people can color.”

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

I think ours are probably the cheapest offered. lol

As a vegetarian, I second the ravioli-yummers! We vegetarians appreciate being served something other than a giant steamed veggie or fruit plate! But maybe add a yummier 2nd appetizer (those latkes don’t sound so good). The spinach/feta puffs sound delish!

Oh man, those, Chivari chairs, how they taunt me! I love that you’re making the investment in the chairs, I really, really wish we could have Chivaris. But alas, they don’t match our wedding feel (but I’d have them in a second at my dream second wedding winery location!), nor would they work on a redwood deck…le sigh! Great choice!

Chivari chairs - Spaniel, you kill me. They were my one desired upgrade, but it came down to an extra hour with the photog or chairs, and my beloved photog won!

As for our linen rentals: yes. We ended up originally choosing something hideously expensive, and are now working to cut the price. (Who knew something that you RENT could be so expensive? I know, I know…it’s a wedding. Get used to it, right?) :)
