Mrs. Pudding's Picture
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

My Babcia is the most wonderful, courageous, and inspiring woman that I have ever met. She survived WWII in Poland, where she was imprisoned in a Nazi work camp. After the war, she walked home from the camp… it took her several weeks. Despite that, she managed to raise 6 kids, 4 of whom would eventually move to Canada. Despite the distance, and the fact that most women her age would be terrified to get on a plane, she has traveled to Canada more than a dozen times.

This is a picture of my aunt, my Babcia and me taken when I visited Poland this summer:

I am ashamed to say that this is the only picture that I took with my dear Babcia. I only saw her for one weekend and was too busy listening to family stories to think about grabbing my camera.

Anyway, my Babcia has promised to make it to Canada for our wedding next year. Nothing would make me happier than to have her with me on that day. We have a very special relationship, and along with Mama and Sister Pudding, she is one of the most important women in my life.

Nevertheless, my Babcia turned 86 in October, and even though she is in very good health, I realize that at her age things could change by next summer. She might not be able to make the long and exhausting journey to Canada. Because she is also aware of this, she gave both Mr. Pudding and me a wedding present when we were in Poland, “just in case”. Babcia Pudding is very religious, so she gave both of us rosaries. Here is mine:

I would like to carry this rosary with me on my wedding day, and I think wrapping it around the stems of my flowers would be the perfect way to do that. I’m thinking something like this image on the left:

She'll Be Coming Across the Ocean (Maybe) : wedding family Memorie

Since I plan on wearing gold and pearl jewelry, I think that this will be a perfect little detail for my flowers.

Are you having any long distance guests at your wedding? How are you planning to honour the ones that can’t make it?

The rosary is lovely and sounds like it would be a great addition to your bouquet. Your Babcia’s story sounds just like my Babyshka’s story. She too is one of the strongest women I know, (her and my mom) and is like a mother to me. She also survived in a Nazi camp (in Belarus) and had to do some unbelievable things to survive the years after the war. I sincerely hope your Babcia is able to make it to your wedding!

Awwww. You just made me miss my Babcia. I hope she makes it to your wedding. I wore a ring and a broach from my Babcia, so she was well represented in spirit.

We’re getting married in the UK next year, and at 88 my Nan just can’t make the incredibly long trip from Australia :( Still thinking of how we can involve her in something - was hoping to take something of hers as my ‘borrowed’ so she can sort of be there.

You Babcia has such an amazing story. I’m glad you will be able to honor her by carrying her rosary beads. My Polish family (other than my great-great-grandmother, who was already in the U.S.) all died in concentration camps during WWII. I wish I knew more about them all.

Wow, what a story she has. I have a Babcia too, but in the same city as me. I know how it feels though to visit only for a time and then go back. That is a beautiful idea… awesome story :)
