About Mrs. Trail Mix

I’m so happy to be getting married outdoors. Nature is what inspires me and where I feel the most at peace. It was a natural and easy decision that we made very early in the planning process and one that I have never doubted.

The decision to have a tented wedding, however, hovers above my head as thick as the rain clouds on our wedding day I fear and worry about. The possibilities of things that could go wrong are endless. Not to mention the stress of dealing with and coordinating multiple vendors along with attempting some serious DIY decor.

As with any type of reception, there are pros and cons to a tented wedding. Let’s break them down and discuss…

Pros

  • A tent is a blank canvas, allowing you to instill whatever decor and theme you want, as opposed to having to work around the decor of a ballroom or reception hall. This is both a blessing and a curse, because it can be really hard to make a final decision on anything when there are so many beautiful inspiring weddings out there to model yours after!
  • A tented wedding usually lends an outdoor setting to all your photos, including beautiful sunsets, flower gardens and twinkling lights.
  • Since a caterer is usually brought in, you have the freedom to choose whichever one appeals to you, not one required by the venue (who may not be able to meet all your needs or expectations).

Sounds all roses, right? You knew the other shoe had to drop.

Here’s a few cons to consider before diving into this decision…

  • For the majority of tented weddings, you have to rent every. single. item. Forks, cups, plates, serving ware, tables, chairs, linens, etc… that adds up quick! So while you might be able to get an initial catering per-head cost that is cheaper for a tented wedding, once you add in the cost of the rentals, it can rival any reception hall per-head.
  • You cannot control the weather. But the weather can control your wedding. Unfortunately, going with a tent for the reception can mean that you’re at the mercy of the weather gods (who can be a fickle bunch). Needless to say, it’s my greatest worry. I have visions of our soaking-wet guests cleaning the mud off of their shoes and shivering… it could easily happen, as last June it rained (and I mean rained) 3 out of the 4 weekends.
  • Having x many vendors means having that many more emails, phone calls, contracts and follow-ups to deal with. It also leaves more room for error. Right now, I’ve been extremely happy with all of my vendors and have no reason to believe anything negative will happen but you just can’t predict the future, ya know?

Alright, now that I have you running screaming away from a tented wedding towards the nearest rustic barn, elegant ballroom or modern loft, can I show you a few pictures, first?

Pictures like these are why we made the decision to have our wedding in a tent. Although it’s caused me a good deal of anxiety, I’m banking that the payoff will be worth it. And if it rains, I will wear cute yellow rain boots and carry a big umbrella and it will somehow be fine, anyways!

Who else shares my love of tented weddings? Are you as nervous for the weather as I am??

We’re having a tented reception, also in June, and I am also scared!! But I feel like its gambling… if it rains or is bloody hot, we’ll still be married at my parents’ home, something I’ve always dreamed of. But if the weather is nice, which it very well could be, we will win BIG - so much more fun, memorable and beautiful than some generic ballroom! So I’m taking the risk and hoping to win big!

We’re having an outdoor wedding with a park pavilion/shelter, and I’m also worried about weather! It could be cold or blistering hot, it could be raining or hailing, anything goes with Minnesota August weather. It’s the only date and place that worked for us though, so we’re just crossing our fingers. :)

I love tented weddings! I had to be talked out of one because of price, but it was very close to happening! My cousin recently got married and they had to get a ton of water out of the tent, though, from the rain storm the night before. But still, I think the pros outweigh the cons.

Hey! That last picture is from my wedding!!
Glad you liked it :-)

Deciding to go the tent route was a huge decision and it came with a few sleepless nights but now that everything is all said and done, I am so glad we chose to do it, and it really was worth all the trouble. There’s something to be said about having a totaly unique venue and being able to do anything you heart desires with the space!

p.s. Don’t forget about the electricity… we really underestimated how much we would need and after blowing multiple fuses decided to call in the professionals in last minute… pm me if you have any questions about that. I feel like an expert now!

Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!!

We had a tented wedding simply because we always planned on being married at my husband’s grandparents house, so it never occurred to me that there would be so much involved until we were well into planning. Having to rent EVERYTHING does pretty much suck, and having to coordinate so many vendors was also a pain, but like you, being married in the place that we always dreamed of was well worth it.

I’m happy to see your blog! We are pretty newly engaged, but know for sure that we are having a tent wedding at my parents’ house in Tennessee next October. I am a bit worried about the weather and all of the other uncontrollables that come with being outdoors, but I totally think it will be worth it! It’s where we’ve always talked about and dreamed of getting married and we love the mountains and outdoors so the extra dances to the weather gods and extra coordination will be worth it! :)

We’re having a tented wedding, and I CAN’T WAIT :-) Ours is in late July, so I’m hoping the weather gods will be a little merciful.

I have totally been having this internal debate with myself! The Fiance and I are totally getting married in June too and the space we rented from our colleges - it isn’t big enough for all our guests to sit in one room and so we’re now wondering about renting a tent! Thank you for this post!

We’re having a tented reception too. The deeper I get into planning, the more stressed about it I get. I just couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere other than the place we picked!

I have only been to one tented wedding and while it was beautiful and unique the one thing I will say is that the band was WAY too loud. Maybe something to think about? A tent just reverberates the sound and a 7 piece band will be so loud the guests wont be able to hear each other!!

We’re having a partially tented wedding. I love the look, and hopefully this will give us the best of both worlds?
