Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

So after a little gentle persuasion from a friend and my future mother-in-law, we bit the bullet and registered. I had mentioned it to Mr. N a few times in the last month and I always got the same response - a change of subject. Before, neither of us saw the point of us registering because really, truly, we have everything we need like I mentioned in my previous post. In the end though, I decided that we should register for things to update the apartment, especially considering I have a shower coming up.

I wanted to register in person so we could both have fun with the scanning gun and see everything in person, but I finally realized that would only happen with a rag and some chloroform. So instead, I logged onto my computer and went on the Bed Bath and Beyond website and signed us up for a new registry!

My FMIL suggested that we have everything shipped to her house. At first I thought, ‘well we’re just gonna have to bring it home and put everything away so why not just have it sent to us?’ But Mr. Nachos brought up a good point… we probably wouldn’t be home to sign for anything, plus we don’t have a working doorbell so even if we were home, we wouldn’t know they were there. I also realized I was thinking that we would be opening gifts as they come, but we’re going to wait to open them once we get home from St. Thomas.

I started browsing for the obvious stuff – towels, sheets and bedspreads for our bed and the guest bed.

The bedding wasn’t difficult (but now that I’m looking at it again, I’m not sure about the top 2). Then it took me a while to figure out what color towels to pick. Frickin’ Libras and decisions! I seriously sat there for 45 minutes trying to decide. I finally picked neutrals in brown, tan and ivory. On to shower curtains. Poop, now I had to find one that would go with the new towels and didn’t cost $100. I finally picked this one and moved onto the kitchen stuff…

I realized that my current coffee maker is about 7 years old which had me worrying about what may be growing in it. So I added one to the list. I kind of wanted a Keurig because my parents have one and it’s a really nifty little thing, but I worry that I’ll run out of those little packets of coffee and end up in caffeine withdrawal until I get my lazy self to the store again. So I settled for a 12 cup standard. Next I started looking at dish sets even though that’s really the last thing we need, but I found some cute ones and added them in 2 colors. I actually had to Google “how many plates to register for” because I had no idea what was standard. Apparently 6-8 sets is the norm, so I added 4 of each color to the registry (although now I’m thinking maybe black instead of the brown, if they have them).

I moved on to the home decorations and picked a few vases…

Then I saw the rugs! We’ve been talking about getting rugs since we moved in but are a little worried because Nacho puppies have ruined quite a few of mine in the past. But a lot of the comments I got on my previous registry post said to register for stuff we’d never buy ourselves. So I figured that would qualify. I added a few more things, then I stumbled upon the table fountains. This is when I realized I have a serious problem making decisions because I went back and forth between 2 fountains for about 40 minutes. Table fountains? Really?!? Ya. Really.

Feeling a little insecure about the list so far, I felt like I needed to add a few small things for my friends on a budget so I picked some really random things that I never knew I needed… a dish scrubber, an over the cabinet towel rack thingy, a soap dispenser, a napkin holder, etc… I was on a roll and after a few hours, decided it was time to step away from the computer.

On the one hand, I would have liked to have had the full registry experience of being in the store. However, I think the image I built up in my head of us prancing around, scanning anything and everything with fairy dust falling from the skies may have been a bit presumptuous. So, on the other hand, I’m happy Mr. Nachos trusts me enough to decorate the place by myself and I’m kind of glad I had the opportunity, especially considering I didn’t have to leave the comfort of my own computer. I am still a little unsure about the amount of stuff I added, though. Too much? Not enough? Too many expensive things? Grrrrrr. My Libra ways seriously make things like this tough for me and cause anxiety. In the end though, for me, it is kind of liberating thinking that stuff we had and used when we were single is moving on to a better place and we can start building with *our* stuff as a soon-to-be-married couple.

It’s kinda funny looking at this because at the time, I didn’t think there was much cohesion in what I was picking out but now that I see these pictures all together, I had somewhat of a consistent color scheme! Woo hoo!

Did you opt to stay in the comfort of your own home and register online? Did you find it an easier way to go about it, or more frustrating than just going in person?

registering was a pain in the ass. i wanted to do it all from home, but there were some things that i needed to see in person. we don’t even have that much stuff on the registry (we are in the same boat as you in terms of not needing a lot)!

Be careful with doing the registry only online. Lots of colors of towels and bedding look different on the computer than they do in real life.

I loved registering while my fiance should have just stayed at home. He wasn’t even excited to use the scanner! The great thing about registering is people revert to it for various gifts like Christmas and birthday so its pretty cool knowing you’ll get exactly what you asked for!

Get to the store and check out the quality of some things too. I did a LOT online and then went into the store later and changed a LOT because of quality.

For example - that red comforter set is really bad quality and cheap looking in person - I wouldn’t get it.

Nope, we went to the store. I was expecting a not so fun experience, but we both had a blast! He had fun with the scanner gun and I got to pick stuff that I wouldn’t normally buy- win, win.

So far, I’ve been doing my registering from afar - I think as the day gets closer I’ll venture into the stores. And I totally registered for that dish set in black. I really dig the square plates for some reason.

This is I went to register at Macy’s with a bridesmaid. I finally got the FI to go with me to update it and was really glad he came - he added stuff I wouldn’t have thought of and it made it more fun for him.
Btw - if they have them, the over the door towel rack and suction-cup sponge holder are two items that are insanely useful and took care of two constant points of contention for us- two towels just cannot dry on one towel rack, and I never forget to let the sponge dry ;)

We had the worst time figuring out how many dining sets to register for too! We ended up going for 12, just in case, but 6-8 is what we really need.

I went to BB&B to start the registry and we did the China plus a few other essentially kitchen appliances - but now I edit every week (when I say Edit I mean ADD) from work :)

I did almost all of it online. We went to use the gun at Crate and Barrel and within like minutes I wanted to give it back to the lady. Figuring out what we wanted while running around the store was not fun like I thought it was going to be. He doesn’t really care about which plates we choose, and I could feel how bored he was. I realized that it was all for me, so I might as well do it at home while drinking some coffee in my pjs.

Like you, Miss Nachos, my fiance and I live together (and have for almost 3 years) so we have most of the basics. I was amazed though at how many little things I found that I never new I needed. We went to Macy’s for a “sip and scan” event. That was the only way to get FI to join me…bribing him with free drinks and food :) I did our Williams-Sonoma registry online though.

the guy and i looked through bbb online for stuff we’d need for our future place and i commented it was just like registering. it was so easy and really helped me to not get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options.

@kayakgirl73: My biggest fear is that I picked things that look nothing like the pictures in real life.

@lara bee: So good to know, I’ve been second-guessing that set since I picked it. Good excuse to shop a little more…love it!

Miss Nachos - for what it’s worth, those Keurig coffee makers ARE awesome — and the good news - if the only reason you are reluctant to get one is that you worry you’ll forget to buy new pods….amazon.com or green mountain coffee’s website has an autoship option that will automatically send you the ones you want every __ weeks/months to ensure you never forget and don’t run out! a total lifesaver. i say change your registry to get a keurig…they are sooo amazing!

Love that shower curtain. We (I) did ours online all the way, baby! And I’m always going back and adding/deleting stuff from the comfort of my laptop!

I haven’t even begun to think about the registry….it just feels so final! Like, how am I supposed to know what type of plate I will like 10 years from now? :P

The keurig also sells little coffee filters that you cane put in your machine and fill with your own coffee. My parents are lending me theirs and I love it, but I won’t buy one b/c I do’nt like all the little plastic cups that end up in a landfill, but now that I have the little filter, I can compost to my hearts content and never worry about running out of cofee

Boy oh boy did we do our registries completely online! I had a tough enough time convincing Mr. GP to sit down and do it that way, much less drag him to the store! Definitely would also have required chloroform :)

… when I was 7 the ONLY THING I wanted for Christmas was a table fountain. And it wasn’t just any table fountain. It was gold. With Cherubs pouring water out of them. I thought it was the most BEAUTIFUL thing in the world, too.

We went into the store so we could get the extra goodies (like… a free bowl, muffins, and mimosas from Crate & Barrel!). And of course, get some advice. But we ended up registering for a lot more things we really DIDN’T need and ended up editing and tweaking everything online afterward.
