Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.

When it came time to choose who we wanted at the wedding, initially we planned on just those that we are closest to (we actually made this decision before we were officially engaged). We thought about inviting a few friends along, but then it turned into “Well, if I invite this person, then I also have to invite x, y, and z”, and at that rate our list could have ended up a mile long! We both agreed to a small group, family only, and thought it would be easiest that way to organize the trip. So at this point, our list looked like this…

My immediate family:

  • Parents
  • 3 sisters and significant others

His family:

  • Mom
  • Dad and stepmom
  • Brother, sister-in-law, and 2 kids
  • 2 Uncles and significant others
  • Cousin

Our guest list was at 20 people including us, and we were happy with that.

Then in May, my bestest friend got married and I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. She and I had been friends for years and she’s the type of friend that just gets me. I call her on my hour-long drive home almost every day just to chat. She’s the type of person that tells it like it is, no-nonsense, no drama, no sugar-coating, and I adore her for that. As we were dancing and drinking the night away at her reception, I turned to Mr. Nachos and told him that our wedding wouldn’t be the same without her. I had to have her there. He agreed, we made the decision to both invite one friend each, and we asked her and her husband to join us on our special day. She was excited, I was teary. Seriously, I am such a sap and cry at almost anything. I even cried once watching So You Think You Can Dance. I’m not kidding.

The next day, Mr. Nachos called up his good friend that he’s known for years and told him we’d love him and his girlfriend to be there with us in April. With no hesitation, he accepted the invitation and we were thrilled.

At that point our guest list was at 24 people including us, and we were happy with that.

Then, my mom called me a few weeks later to tell me she was talking to her friend that she’s known since they were little, and invited her and her husband along. It was unexpected, but no problem. Our families have known each other forever and she’s been my non-official Auntie C since I was born. So, I added 2 more to the list.

Finally, our guest list was at 26 people including us, and we were happy with that.

In the long run, adding more people didn’t really make anything more difficult for us since everyone was paying for their own trips, anyway. The main thing it affected was the number of invitations and STDs we’d be making and sending, but we finalized the list far enough in advance so we were OK.

I really think we have a great group of people to share our celebration with and I’m happy the list stops there. It really could have been so much bigger, but big was not what either of us envisioned when we started planning. The tricky part is going to be coming up with a guest list for our home celebration, but I’ve put that on the back burner and will worry about it in a few months.

The procrastinator’s motto: why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? One of my favorites!

Are you kidding me? I cry at least one time per episode of SYTYCD. Sometimes I have to pause it to compose myself. Too much? :)

I love that you’re having a truly intimate wedding with only your nearest & dearest there with you! Here I was thinking our 75 person wedding was intimate. I wish we could cut it down to under 30 :) Enjoy! It will probably be the best wedding any of your guests have ever attended!

I’m glad you each decided to invite a friend. I was invited to a destination wedding 3 years ago for one of my best friends and it was a wonderful experience to share with eachother, and one I know we will never forget!

I cry almost every episode of SYTYCD too! Love that there are others doing this too! Sorry to change the subject, but does anyone else have a girl crush on Cat Deeley?! :o) Love her!

Miss Nachos - I think your guest list sounds perfect and very intimate…I kind of wish we could do the same thing to save the stress of guest listing…

Huge girl crush on Cat and her strange, slanted nose.

I think it’s great that you didn’t let your idea of a ‘family-only’ guest list keep you from realizing that you really want your best friend to be there - she’s like family! I’m jealous of your small guest list… I wish I had been better about saying no to some people on the list.

Don’t feel bad, Nachos - I cry a minimum of once per season of So You Think You Can Dance! Lacey & Kameron’s “Dancing” number - lip-quivering ensued. Mia Michael’s number honoring her father - I die. Jeanine & Jason’s Travis Wall number - yeah, so gorgeous and Jason Mraz’s song gets me every time. Breast cancer number - I was a hot mess. We should start a support group! LOL!

Sounds like a great way to pick your invite list, especially since you’re having a second reception! You can be as picky as you want for the DW!
